I’ve been on a nearly ketogenic diet for a few weeks, and have seen some pretty good results. My only sources of carbs are nuts, spinach, and brocolli.
I’m considering continuing this up until August to try to get leaner, but I’m worried about any problems I might have by being on a ketogenic diet for such a long time. Anyone had any experience with this?
Also, would fruit post workout help or hinder my progress?
THe general diet I follow is basically keto, except for post workout carbs. I do this to limit the amount of muscle lost, as the high levels of cortisol resulting from training is detrimental to the preservation of lean body mass.
Yes I can increase strength while using a keto diet. I’ve been doing it for about 6 weeks now.
I also use glutamine peptides+BCAA pwo which no doubt helps, and if you use the carb-up properly, yes you can gain or maintain strength while losing fat. I wouldn’t use it for bulking though. I don’t think that its very efficient for gaining size long term.
Unless you want the gains to come very slowly. But yes, it is possible to get stronger while ketoing.
I forget who I was reading, but it was some guy at elite fts talking about one of his powerlifters who had never dieted before.
His comment about his trainee was
“My trainee didn’t KNOW you were ‘supposed to get weaker’ when dieting, so he didn’t”.
Take home message, train hard, keep PWO nutrition solid and in line with your goals, and stay strong.
Well, I’m not a gal looking to gain size, just strength…oodles of strength. I’m going to be on this diet for about 4 months, so I’m hoping that it’s effective for both goals.
I’ve heard that when on a ketogenic for a long time, you can have trouble dealing with carbs later on, and are more likely to store them as fat.
I’ll be training hard- full body strength days three times a week, plus I’ll be working at an adventure camp all summer, so it’ll be a pretty active lifestyle.
I’ve been keeping my carbs at less than 50g a day for nearly two years now. I’ve gained both size and strength, and I’m always very lean and vascular. Although you’re probably limiting your ultimate potential, I think you can make very good gains if you train extremely hard.

I’m willing to not be able to say I’m ketogenic if that is going to benefit me training-wise. Besides, since I only weight train three days out of the week, the other four I will be back on a ketogenic diet.

Serious question: How are your bowel movements?
They are ridiculously normal, actually. It is a very unusual occurrence if they don’t take place within fifteen minutes of seven am, day in, day out.

I take it from this comment that you only have one a day? Sorry for prying.
Read Lyle Mcdonald’s works he has some articles published on mesomorphosis and has written several excellent books on the keto diet subject.
And yes, glutamine supplementation, post workout, does help when dealing with such low carb intake and glycogen.

btw, if u dont take much carbs. and u do take em later on; you SHOULD be more CARB sensitive. meaning they would be put to better use.
Read Refined physic by CT.
Holy crap, that article was good. Thanks for the suggestion. I love Mr. CT.

fiber supplements are a wonderful thing. and besides its not how many times that is important, its volume moved in an entire day, and i believe its 12 inches daily?
i think the low carb shits only happen when people choose to get thier carbs from nuts and legumes. if youre chowing a half cup of broccoli three times a day and fiber if needed, your bowels are fine
