Loftearmen's MMA Log

X2 what LB said. As I big guy this is the way to go, also as you get closer to your ideal training schedule you will burn more and more calories, which at some point will have a tipping point and you will rapidly loose weight at that point. Staying consistent is the key. Really liked your push up sit up day. I should throw one in myself.

I went to muay thai today. Drills went particularly well. I was feeling good and then I all-out sparred for the first time with one of the more experienced fighters who is pretty big and strong and got rocked in the head a couple times because I didn’t set up my kicks. I also found that my defensive maneuvers suck ass. I need to practice them A LOT. When I did set up a kick properly I nailed him in the leg and he had to stop for a bit. I wasn’t really trying to hit him hard, it just landed really solidly. That was really the only time I did anything right though. The rest of my performance was pretty sorry due to lack of technique and being pretty slow.

As far as weight loss goes, I am already accustomed to the training load. Strongman involves around 15 hours a week of all-out training so this is actually a little easier as far as recovery is concerned. Plus, I am trying to force cardiovascular adaptations which are much easier to come by (from a metabolic and anatomical perspective) than neuromuscular adaptations; especially considering that my strength is already superior to what fighting requires. Anyway, I should be good at 2750 kcals a day, it’s only 250 less than what I was eating before which basically means I have to cook my eggs in cooking spray instead of with olive oil.

I don’t think I will ever be able to train much more than I already am. I am already training 7 days a week with 2 sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays. I just have a seriously hard time losing fat. My body really, really wants to weigh over 300lbs. I am just built that way I guess.

I hear you, I am also trying to drop weight. Its extremely difficult for me to drop weight unless I am doing a lot of steady state cardio and dieting. Right now I am limiting intake but unable to run so I am walking which everyone says is better anyway. Good luck on the sparring, getting your bell rung is just the admission fee everybody has to pay.

Hahahaha, I dropped my calories by 250 a day and lost 7lbs over night. I know it was almost all water and glycogen, it was just funny how that worked out.

Thanks man. I really didn’t feel like I hit my back well enough. I’ll probably do some rows and pull ups tomorrow too. And now, the softer side of Loftearmen

Muay thai class tonight. I really need to do more muay thai work and more conditioning.

Cutting my calories down to 2750 has been pretty successful so far. I am looking leaner than I did just a week ago and my strength is still relatively high. My energy has been lacking a little bit though.

I didn’t get much opportunity to train outside of lifting this week because we had big snow storms (big for TX anyway) so the studio was closed.

Hahaha, fair enough.

I tried to stay away from kicking today. I drilled combos with slips and rolls and my main focus was on not dropping my hands or leaving openings where I could be countered against easily. My punches are looking and feeling better than ever and so is my foot work.

Jiu Jitsu Class

We went over the fat man mount and how to transition into armbars. I rolled with a guy about my size (by size I mean weight) and I did pretty well. His skill level is slightly higher than mine but he was really outmatched physically. I could control him easily enough to focus on working my techniques though which was nice. I learned a lot.

That is extremely depressing.

Your lad 13, 125lbs, 315lb deadlift.

Me 25, 188lbs, 380lb deadlift.

I’m going outside for a walk. I may be some time.

Haha, well, if it makes you feel better he can’t box for shite; we are working on that though. Here’s a vid, he was pretty proud of this pull. A while back I made him a deal that if he could deadlift 315 with nice, clean form I’d buy him a real powerlifting belt (they’re pretty expensive). I guess I have to get him one now.

Strong kid! What’s interesting from the video is how hard he strains for that rep, and how long it takes him to get it. I’ve never done a rep that I’ve worked that hard for, and I often suspect that that’s part of my problem. I don’t have the privilege of being taught by a proper powerlifter/strongman, so I only really have the internet to go by, where everyone says to do everything submax, don’t strain/grind etc. I’ve probably taken it too literally, and am guilty of not pushing myself hard enough. Definitely food for thought.

In powerlifting, that is actually not much of a grinder, especially not for a deadlift. I’d like to see some videos of you pulling, I’m sure I could help you add some weight to that bar with just a few pointers.

That’s kind mate. I’ll see if I can get some videos recorded. I think it’s a problem with all my lifts, that I’m not actually pushing myself hard enough to get stronger. It’ll be interesting to see what you think.
