Living In the Southern U.S.

I’m hiring… what do you do? And don’t let Derek lie. Houston Proper is bad ass for anyone who stays awake past 9pm.
I used to go to bed at 9 in college, but mainly so I could hit the gym at A&M (one without air conditioning) at 6 am.

Right now I teach at an university. In the past I have had non-academic jobs. The last one was for the DoD where I did whatever asked, but mainly finding savings, either time or money though mainly both, in the interface between a major agency and a branch of service. What people skills I have is in explaining difficult and sometimes challenging ideas in a way that people can understand as well as I have proven to be good at interviewing as well.

Southern Racism = Overblown I agree

Northeast rudeness equally as overblown.

I have never been treated more rude than when visiting my family in Phoenix, it was a cop who saw my drivers license and man it was on!
I agree…I got two sets of neighbors from New York. One set are fuck up’r than a football bat. The others are nice as can be. The former are fucked up even by New York standards I am bettin’. I mean wow…

I don’t care how well you interview, half that shit is a lie anyways.

If I asked you to go in to an office building, say the Shell One Plaza in downtown Houston, bypass the secretaries and put on a dunce cap, walk in to an executive office unannounced and start doing jumping jacks while singing the star spangled banner, would you do it?

Serious question.
MattyXL wrote:
such a generalization, not even close to being the truth, Living and not just passing through NYC my whole life the general rudeness is a bit overstated. I have as well as observed the NYer being uber polite especially to people who are obviously not from around these parts, myself included. When I see a family of mid westerners obviously on the wrong train and panicked I get out of my way to aid them as does other NY commuters. I have no problem starting conversations where it warrants, when Im waiting on line Id rather not get into idle chit chat, when Im at a bar, even in the gym a convo here and there is fine and Im happy to oblige.

On to your other point, Im living proof that many of us NYers would have no problem putting you on your ass if you bumped into me on a street on purpose. So don’t think it will just happen in your city. And all I here is thank you and your welcome in any store in NYC that story you told is anomaly and not the norm…in fact when a thank you is warranted and the person doesn’t get it, a rude your welcome would come next because it is expected.

Ive met plenty of jerkoffs in the south and plenty of cool people. Many southerners hear the accent and either love you or hate you based on the accent.
I don’t think it’s that this area is filled with jerkoffs, or that they won’t help you with shit. Don’t get me wrong.

But the attitude is very, very different here as opposed to in the south. People put up with less bullshit, and like you said, if someone I don’t know waves to me, I think either I was drunk when I met them or that they’re fucking crazy.

And while I’m a lot like you - I can do small talk but I prefer not to - southerners live for that shit.

And, finally, yes, if you run into someone on the street on purpose… New York ain’t the place to do it.

Lol I dont like Applebees, I prefer Texas Roadhouse.

If you have no kids then yes where you live is fine.

There are alot of great locations in Houston proper, but in general it is alot cheaper to live out in the burbs, best way to get good school systems. If I am single (as I am in the process of becoming again) Midtown or The Hights are my choices.
The real heights, right?

Washington Heights sucks balls to live in. I have some buddies over there and like to cruise but I would start shooting people if I lived there.

Texas Roadhouse is out of Indiana. When one open here I had.to inform them they hung the Texas flag upside-down.
I hope you punched them in the face.

Taste of Texas is my fav. Houston steak house. Plus my parents friends own it which is awesome.

Frank’s Chop House is good too.

By interview I meant interview as in doing research and asking people questions, not specifically job interviews.

If there was a point, sure I can do jumping jacks. I have gotten up in front of hundreds students and fellow academics over the past few years. A board room would not phase me much.

Basically I hire sales. Annuity wholesale. Commission and benefits are provided, I can negotiate an initial salary but you get residuals and would convert to commission only, my experience is that most accountants don’t like the mentality required, but I would have you earning more than a CPA in a couple years if you succeeded.

I will tell you though, public speaking experience aside, an analytical mind typically does not do well.

You can shoot me a pm if you’d like but your day would be spent on a phone calling financial agents and pushing annuities I’m authorized to broker. All day. You will also need licenses requiring 60 hours (actual, not college) of study.

And I would have you do something socially embarrassing as part of an interview.
Tex Ag wrote:

I’m not sure what the case is in the rest of the South, but in Texas we have a ton of people of Irish descent, and obviously Mexican descent. Because of that, Catholicism is pretty common here. I go to one of the schools in this state that’s known as being pretty conservative (so you might expect everyone to be a WASP), yet we have a huge Catholic population here.

And if you want to get good pizza you have to be in or near a city. I don’t know of any Italians from the Northeast that would want to go settle down in a small town. Most of them seem to have the same line of thought that my family did: go where the jobs are, in the southern cities.

The Irish in my family immigrated to Texas when it was a Republic.

What many do not realize is that there are many ethnic towns in Texas. Not quite the same thing as related to founding ethnic groups but my parents town now has a Mandarin newspaper.

Catholicism is growing in my area but unfortunately, I’m in an area that is more rural. It’s ok mayeb it’s just me not liking being the outsider.
I don’t love large cities, but I’m guilty of liking the conveniences they offer. I usually can find a suitable substitute for the things I miss about NY, like pizza, but I try harder to keep an open mind that the lack these things don’t necessarily make my life worse off here. I guess liked having choices. Now if I liked fried chicken, there’s about 10 places to choose from. But as a consequence, we have excellent cardiac units in the local hospitals. Pluses and minuses, I keep telling myself.

I’d venture that white implies celibacy, but I know too many people in Texas…
