Liver and Drugs

What’s the difference between something being hard on the liver and something being bad for the liver exactly?

I recently started a medication that people are commonly prescribed to take indefinately – Wellbutrin – and it is supposedly hard on the liver but there is nothing wrong with taking it for years straight. I just found out what happens when u drink alcohol while taking it – the worst hangover of your life the next day.

However, clearly while this medication ties up your liver and makes it work hard or something, it doesnt damage it or else people wouldnt be encouraged to take it for years on end.

So what’s the difference between drugs that are “hard on liver” like Wellbutrin and say an oral AAS that shouldnt be taken for more than 6 weeks or so since it can be “toxic to liver”?

thats an excellent question i cant answer because i dont drink or use orals. but i want to bump this to see what we can get.

Paracetamol is not hard on the liver. Take your daily dose in one go and go binge drinking and you’ve got a good chance of needing a liver transplant. Different drugs interact in so many different ways, some that arent fully understood, its best not to take chances. I dont think that taking oral AAS and drinking is a wise move at all…

Hmm, I wasn’t talking about taking AAS or Tylenol with alcohol. I think moomin you must have misread my question.

Anyone? I figure this is the forum where people would know the most about liver and drugs but maybe I should try posting to nutrition forum?

I think Moomin was just referring to the fact that some drugs, Like tylenol, while mild enough on their own, can open the door for acute liver problems should other substances be introduced (like alchohol).

I don’t know much about wellbutrin and if it acts similarly, but synergistic effects do not necessarily equal 1 + 1 in all cases. Sometimes you add 1 + 1 and you get 10…not 2.

Hey moomin who are you and if you don’t mind me asking where did you come from?

How damaging is 17aa orals next to a night of drinking?

I’m from the UK, I’ve studied chemistry for a long time, and have been lifting for a couple of years.

That one has been asked many times and I’m pretty sure that an night of binge drinking is harder on the liver then a “regular” size dose of aas. IMO though the older you are and/or the more experiance you have with orals the less you should do them. At least that’s how I intend to do things. I might occasionally do some var when I’m in my 30’s but most likely will go with something like eq, primo, test.
