Lifting with the Stricks

Thanks! It works. I really wish the room was about 4’ wider and we had another power rack, as we sometimes have to compete for it. A broader range of DBs would be nice as well. All things considered, though, it gets the job done.

Joe, I’d be okay. She would just expect me to fix it.

Those deads looked solid. I can’t really offer any good critique at all, keep it up!

I tried out the z presses and quite like them. They are a completely different animal than the standing overhead (in a good way).

My deads have driven me nuts. Then, a few weeks ago, it dawned on me what it is.

I feel like I am getting my shoulders in front of the bar. Too much, depending on who you are talking to. Though others will say that it is fine.
In either case, I am 73.5" tall but have a 28-29" inseam. I am all torso. When I get in position, my shoulders are just going to be out front, unless I squat down like a duck.

So, I finally decided to quit fighting it. I can tell if I am too far forward for me. Outside of that, I am sticking with it.

Aren’t the Z presses awesome!? They are very different. And I think they will carry over very nicely to my regular MP. I will definitely keep them around, as an accessory, if not the main.

^^^ I feel your pain. Actually Ive realized here as of late regarding my own deads. I was progression fine on them until I started over analyzing them and started tinkering with my form. Basically id say if its working and making progress and your back isn’t getting messed up more power to you.

Ooooh, I like the Dead progression you are starting…and the set of 5 in vid…looked pretty damn fine in my eyes! The speed MP vid was funny…I see some unplanned ceiling renovation in your future!!!

Strick-

those pulls looked good - and fast.
nice work

I think its the beard.

Ive’ been cycling the Z-preses fretty much as my only pressing move
they are different and great.

Bulldog, that is right where I am. If it works, relatively speaking, go with it. Some things can be over analyzed. It ends up looking like a game of twister, instead of a lift.

OG, if I had bumper plates I would so consider letting the bar go…just to see. I am such a kid.

Kev, the pulls did look fast enough, to me. They didn’t feel as light as I would like, though. When I finished the set, ny first thought was, “If I add 115# more to the bar, would it go up?” Only time will tell. But I am sick of being stuck at 500#.

Jennifer - Squats
Strick - Shoulder

Got Jennifer under the bar today, used some creative plating, so she wouldn’t know how much was on it and tried to push her. It paid off.

Jennifer’s Workout

Squats
Barx8
80x5
100x3
115x2
135x1
145x1
155x1 - PR +5#…this was a pretty rep. Controlled, but with just a tad of recoil off the bottom
165x1 - PR +15#…got antsy and divebombed it. The rep went, but it was way too fast.
170x0

Goblets Squats - she could barely hold the DB for the set
60x10x4

Lunges - DBs
15x10x2

Strick’s Workout

Face Pulls
79x15
115x10x4

YTWL
5x10x2

Z Presses
barx15
95x5
135x3
185x3
205x3
215x3 - PR +1 Rep
225x1 - PR +10#…much fatigue
***1st rep on these is a bitch…no recoil, no leg/hip stability, inhibited lean…all from the shoulders…AWESOME!

BB Shrugs
225x20
315x15
405x12
465x9

Supersetted DB Laterals and Rev Flyes…30-35 second between supersets

Laterals
40x10
30x10
15x10
40x6
30x6
15x10

Rev. Flyes
40x10
30x8
15x8
40x5
30x5
15x7

I am thrilled with jennifer’s PR. She had no idea how much weight was on the bar. Creative plating at its best.
Also, glad to get the Z press PRs, but damn they are work. I sure hope they pay off.
They do tweak my shoulder pretty good, hence the no follow up presses. And the damned pain is near lockout, not at the beginning, like it used to be.

Catching up on things. Really big pressing Skip, and huge congrats on Jenifer’s PR. Y’all are on fire!

Thanks, Wilson. We are working it. Hopefully in the right direction.

Thank you! I was giddy afterward. Not only because of the PR, but because squats are my favorite lift and always make me feel good anyway. And the “creative plating” thing is such a good thing. I do so much better if I don’t know that I’m doing something I haven’t done before. I really figured the 170# I failed on was probably less than my previous max of 150#. When Skip told me what I’d done I was all smiles  I do wish I’d gone down slower. I have asked him to video me next time though on lighter sets, because he says I don’t go that fast usually, and I’d like to see.

Thanks, Matty. I don’t know about “flew” up, but they were manageable. Deads are always hard for me to judge. They felt heavy, but there was never any question that they would go.
The real question is…could I throw 100# more on there and still pull it!? We will know sometime around Halloween![/quote]

I know you dont want to count it but I know you pulled 5 wheels before. I know you said it was bad form, which wasnt as bad as you say so I dont think there will be any issues with throwing another 100lbs on that bar

Maybe. I hope you are right. My deads have been stranger than my other lifts. I went from 350# (like the 3rd time I had deadlifted in my life) to 500# in 4 months. I have only been able to replicate that once, since then. I dropped down to 465-475#.

My back complicates things. If I hit it too hard, I am still fatigued in a weeks time, assuming I don’t go too far and have to take 3 months off. I worry that this keeps me from hitting it hard enough.

Or I might just be a pansy. My wife would say the latter.

Great stuff. That was the worlds fastest squat. If I go down that fast I’m not coming up again so kudo’s to you for getting that rep.

Those z presses are looking solid. I can’t wait until I get to that level although it might be a while.

Deads are funny sometimes. When I’ve gotten hurt it takes forever to get back up to any appreciable weight and it always messes with my head. There’s a balance that has to be struck between pushing yourself to make gains and being safe. That’s one reason I like triples so much. They are heavy enough to be taxing but light enough so that you feel safe doing them.

james

Lady Strick- That is one deep squat…Congrats on the PR…I had to watch it twice as your descent was so fast I thought I had a vid error!!! Great work coming up out of it…major props…now if you just had a good training mentor… thankfully I live in Mass and your husband isn’t driving here to kick my ass over that comment…you’re not … right Strick?

Blink and you miss the squat. Quite the drop. Great job handling the weight!

That was a fast squat…or, at least, a fast descent. Too fast. I, personally, do not believe that squats need to creak along at a snails pace. And I like the slightest bit of recoil off the bottom. In this case, she pretty much let it go into a free fall.

She has not been doing this and, actually, has been consciously slowing them down. I told her to take it down in a smooth, controlled manner and to take a little recoil off the bottom (not bring it to a complete stop). She got enthusiastic  Honestly, I think the amount of weight she was moving is what drove it.

The biggest problem, besides the potential for injury, is that to descend that fast, you really have to unload the weight a bit. In doing so, you lose tightness and the built up tension.

Either way, the rep went and it was deep as hell. A 15# PR and something to build on.

OG - she probably could use a good trainer. Since you are the current squat king, perhaps you would volunteer?? I have never done more than 15 reps in a set. You are definitely more qualified…if not insane.

Thanks all. She is doing great and, like the rest of us, constantly learning and tweaking.

Funny, after watching your 495# x 3 dead video, I was thinking the same thing.
