  1. One candidate rises well above the publics expectations. And now we are back to debate one of this race. In a way the 100 million dollars that Obama spent calling Romney a murderer, tax cheat and child molester (okay I made up the last one), backfired on him when Romney showed up and looked and sounded Presidential during that first debate. So in essence you had someone who was not only dominate in that first debate but overcame the expectations of an electorate that had been treated to lies from the Obama smear machine for 3 solid months.

You know what I find interesting with this. Is the o camp set themselves up perfectly here to call romney a flip/flopper. Because they knew he was going to deflect all the balme and defame ads o was running, to use ryan’s words. So, because Mitt bucked the narrative o had painted they could now paint the flip/flopper narrative.

Even though the cheerleader media is still trying to push the flip/flop story line, it doesn’t seem to be working.

I think the reason it isn’t working is they spent too much time on the “tax returns” and “evil rich guy” attacks, too early. The effect of that has faded, and people aren’t really that objectionable to it anymore.

I’m starting to think Romney’s camp is a lot smarter than we gave them credit for. They have played a good game of chess here. Just need to bring the closing statement into the fold, stay above the fray and be a leader.

Another point about Romney. Reports seem to indicate that doing what he had to do and not being too aggressive last night was his call (and a brilliant one). His campaign seemed to have wanted him to go for the President’s jugular (like some have indicated here).

I read that as well. And I agree it was a good call.

I read the same thing, and it’s an excellent point - we don’t if Romney will ultimately win, but one thing appears to be true: Romney knows what he is doing, and knows how to win.

Not unrelated, these are the same skills and judgment a President needs to have when navigating Congress, especially a divided one.

One last point:

This man (Romney) has essentially been ACTIVELY campaigning for President for 8 plus years.

I’m sure that he can almost smell the leather in the Oval Office and taste the Prime Rib from the White House Kitchen.

He is not going to blow it all with just 2 weeks left in the election.

I agree with most of what you’ve said with one exception. It is Mitt Romney is a lot smarter than most gave him credit for. But as I’m fond of saying, you have to be pretty sharp to make yourself 300 million bucks in the private sector. Don’t get me wrong being a community organizer is um…good… LOL

…and feel his butt settling into the cushy seat of Air Force One.

Hey I just wanted to keep it going.

Sorry.

My girlfriend (normally a Democrat, but not this election) watched the debate. I wandered in and out.

I wandered in just as Obama said we don’t use horses and bayonettes, anymore.

Well, the statue above is of a “horse soldier,” of which I am one. It’s final home will be in front of World Trade Center One.

I actually got pulled from a much more mundane combat arms posting becuase I am an expert rider and can do things like rope a calf or shoot a rifle from the saddle.

W rode – nay, we charged at full gallop — into the breach with AC-130s (“puff”) flying low and slow as our artillery.

We went on horse because there was – and remains – no other way to get there. I remember hearing on the radio from a zoomie, “fuck, it’s a cavalry charge.”

Later, we went house-to-house with fixed bayonet — a scare factor used so we didn’t have to shoot people if could avoid it.

++++++++

In short, Obama is completely out of touch with how the Taliban were really driven out – no wonder they’re coming back under his watch.

Excatly why I’ve said in the past, the Commander in Chief should be a Vet.

^^Awesome post, thethirdruffian.

Romney was right on with his China answer, which none of the talking heads that I’ve seen even mention. Obama looked totally beaten when Romney took the China question (which was supposed to be a toughie) and nailed it; then he rambled on about something or other in his response because that’s Geithner’s job to deal with China, Obama’s probably intimidated as hell by them (just like with the Russians).

Obama’s mien and demeanor post debate was not that of someone who thought he won. Obama left the stage early with his wife while Romney stayed and acted like he won.

I would just like to go off topic for a moment to say that of all the things on the planet that are bad ass and takes balls the size of small planets, this has to be near the top.

It’s that kind of job that makes Felix Baumgartner look like a big pussy.

Thank you for your service and your balls.

I love it Romney shows he knows nothing and the CJ Society sees it as a Romney win .

Last debate down, and Obama releases a second term agenda the next day. Might have gotten that out sooner? You can only criticize the agenda of your opponent for so long, before people start asking themselves “hey, what exactly does Obama intend to do his second term?”

When you’ve got four years of a crappy recovery, you can’t just criticize the other guy. You have to show how and why things are going to pick up steam in your second term. I haven’t forgotten my concerns with Romney, but his campaign and metamorphosis into a Presidential figure has been executed brilliantly. Obama’s? I honestly can’t wrap my head around the failures of his campaign. Big Bird and binders-of-women?

An agenda released after the debates are over? If they did this to protect his agenda from being torn apart in debate…what a mistake that was. I really believe people were waiting for something they could put hands and eyes on, some plan for a better second term.

At some point you have to stop towing the line, if only to preserve your own credibility. If you think Obama won the debate as far as presentation goes, fine. But he flat failed to ruin Romney on the last policy front he had left. Look at the CNN poll Commander and Chief question. This isn’t just about us. I think our comments here pretty much reflect what the people as a whole saw. Romney gets a thumbs up, proceed, as Commander in Chief. Not that Obama failed to earn the same. He simply failed to deny Romney. So now that leaves this election to be decided on domestic issues, primarily the economy and jobs. And on those questions, Obama hasn’t fared so well. Obama had to make Romney unacceptable with regard to foreign policy alone. It didn’t happen, pitt. I’m very sorry.

Keep in mind their entire strategy was to not talk about what Obama has done or will do, but tear down Mitt Romney the person. With two weeks to go and the race so close they’re worried and are undergoing a strategy shift.

This can’t hurt Obama, but I agree with you that something earlier may have helped him. But again it was all about tear Romney the man apart and instigate class warfare.

And the problem is that they tipped their hand and revealed this strategy early on, then did nothing to correct the image that it was all they had…because, clearly, it was all they had.

I also liked TBs post noting that Romney’s deft handling of the past three weeks or so is a fair display of the skills he will be required to use as Commander in Chief. And the fact that the present Commander in Chief and his team appear to have been outwitted at every turn is one more reason to be optimistic that we’ll be under new management three months from now.

Yeah, I’m thinking this is way too late. I will disagree by saying this will hurt Obama, if only a little bit. Just like personal attacks can only work so long before they begin to backfire, calling into question your own maturity and character, so too for criticizing your opponent’s agenda when you haven’t one of your own. At some point light bulbs start going off in people’s head. “Sure, I’m a little concerned with Romney’s plans here, but you know, Obama hasn’t said much of anything about what he’s going to actually do.” With four years of a crappy recovery that ‘strategy’ isn’t going work for long.

Look, in my opinion it’s too late for the idea that Obama actually has an agenda/plan to disseminate. However, for those so informed, this is going look like nothing but a slickster trying to squeeze out a plan after the threat of it being argued in public has passed by.

To me this agenda dump is an admission that Obama’s campaign invested in the wrong strategy. Now they’re desperate to reverse course and get something out there. Much too late in my opinion. Too late to help, and possibly looks bad.

Pitt, I can’t see your posts, but howsabout your prediction for who’s going to win the election?

Maybe yes, maybe no. While the trend looks good two weeks is a long time in politics.

A CNN reporter covering the Obama campaign has snarked that there is nothing new in the Obama plan, it’s the same stuff he has been saying but it’s now just compiled in a nice booklet now". Ouch.

While I agree with you what else did Obama really have? His four years in office have been a complete failure. With the exception of taking out Bin Laden he’s got nothing. I think he had to launch attacks against Romney to stay viable. And with about 70% of the press in his back pocket no one was going to call him out n it. And it worked up to the point that the country actually met Romney and found him to be acceptable.

I disagree that launching an agenda even at this late date will hurt him. This may give some on the fence reason to vote for him. Then again it might just be a non starter.
