I am heading to LA for about a week in January (10th-16th. My buds and I have already planned out a few things, concert, some late shows, a couple touristy sites and bars.
I was wondering if there is anything to definately check out while out there, or anything to not waste my time with?

Check out the boardwalk in Venice. Rent bikes and drive the entire thing. It’s a great freak show. There are even a bunch of rings and bars to grab a quick workout on.
Eat at “The Firehouse” for breaskfast and you’ll be sure to see some mass monsters.
Best breakfast is at Omellet Parlor in Venice.
I’ll second Venice Beach. It was quite an experience.
If you get to Santa Monica, you can check out the 3rd Street Promenade and the Santa Monica Pier.
Food is pretty much the same as anywhere in the US. You will be hard pressed to find Dr Pepper anywhere. Everyone raves about In N Out Burger. It isn’t all that. Carl’s Jr is much better.
Go to the Chinese Theater, also. There is a place right across the street from the Chinese Theater called Hamburger Hamlet. It is really good.

Few things for now, I’ll comment some more later:
if you like good beer - Naja’s Place in Redondo Beach has 60 some odd beers on tap.
if you like good coffee - Ground Work coffee shop - theres one in Santa Monica, Venice, Hollywood - Google them for locations.
one place you MUST go to - Daikokuya restaurant downtown in Little Tokyo. Get the ramen noodles. The broth is steeped all day in pork bones, theres pork in the soup that melts in your mouth - you don’t have to chew and a whole bunch of other shit that’ll give you a mouthgasm. Again, for exact location - Google.
check out Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach. They’re both pretty fun.
I’ll post some more hot spots later.
Watch out for drunken, coked out celebrities driving on the freeways.
Seriously, Venice Beach is the shit. Watching a bunch of ripped mo-fo’s work out and then watching some dude swallow a sword and then watching another crack head balancing a woman on a chair on his chin is pretty freaky.
Plenty of good suggestions already. In general, good places to be are the beach cities like Venice, Santa Monica, Newport, Hermosa, etc.
For a good sportsbar, check the Fox Sports Grill in Irvine. For a museum, the Getty Center is enjoyable.
For the LA experience of overpriced shopping, check the Grove in LA or the Beverly Center and Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. (a few months back, I saw Jessica Simpson on Rodeo wearing a small top and small denim skirt – even my girlfriend wanted to lick her breasts)

So here’s the thing: the taste of In N Out burgers might not blow you away instantly. It’s more about everything being completely fresh, never frozen that changes the way you feel after eating all other “fast food” burgers.

agreed. the grove is must-see. also, go to sprinkle’s cupcakes. WOW.
check out duke’s in malibu. go to the barefood bar. order chicken nachos. it’s right on the beach. the water splashes up to the glass partician.
in-n-out is terrific. very fresh food. get your fries and burger animal style.
lots of hot hot women.
saddle ranch will give you a good feel of the hollywood crowd. don’t wear tennis shoes. sometimes you have a hard time getting in.
be careful on sunset. lots of DRAMA at night when dudes unable to pick up girls running around looking for trouble. if you’re not good at letting things roll off yoru back, you’ll be in a fight.

One other thing I forgot to ask - one of you mentioned one place it gets rough at nightfall - I was wondering what the crime situation is (i guess that would heavily depends on the area)…I’m a small-town guy myself and am a little freaked out from all the stereotypes in the news and on movies.
Just wondering if I really have to worry about getting rolled walking around. That and earthquakes…the earthquakes freak me out too…

Boring, boring, boring, boring. The Hollywood Wax Museum must have the best advertising agency in the world working for them if they can get you to think that it actually might be interesting. The only thing on that list that might be worth checking out if you have time would be the tar pits. But only for about 10 seconds because seriously, how interesting can a stagnant lake of tar be?
Also, if you’re gonna be up in Malibu area - go to Neptune’s Net. Its where they filmed part of The Fast and the Furious (where Vin Diesel and the white dude are eating at that restaurant thats right on the water). Its tons of good fried fish foods.
And if you’re down in Irvine and you’re the shopping type, check out the South Coast Plaza. The Grove and Rodeo Drive are good suggestions too if you like dropping cashish.
And as far as crime and earthquakes? I think its funny how everyone around the country that don’t live in LA like to rip on it, “ohhh man, I’m so glad I don’t live in LA! Who would want all that crime??? - you’d best not walk out of your front door without a bulletproof vest lest you get hit by some stray bullets from a driveby shooting. And the earthquakes! Oh God the earthquakes! I hear theres an earthquake there everyday. At least a 5 on the richter scale every time. And don’t even get me started on the landslides and forest fires! You’d best stay here in Akron, Ohio instead of going to that big city where you’re bound to either get shot, taken away by a landslide, burn in a forest fire, or get killed in an earthquake.”
I hope you’re not serious when you say you’re worried about earthquakes for the week you’re out here. You probably have more of a chance getting in a car accident back home in Michigan than finding yourself in an earthquake in LA.

I would go for the fish tacos at Dukes. Barefoot bar is great. Be prepared to get wet depending on your seating and the tide. The dolphins are out swimming most of the time.

The bus tours will just drive you around to all the coked-out celebrities mansions. Don’t waste your time with that shit. Celebrities aren’t anything special, they just have a lot of money and coke. Big effing deal, I’m sure their shit still stinks.
