Can you vote? Just curious - I may have you confused with someone else.
Just to clarify… the illegal immigration problem was worse under Bush, before the economy went into the toilet. Just like the Tea Party rallies (that never happened when Bush was president) the Arizona law is all about partisan politics - the governor is facing a tough reelection so she’s playing to her base.
Also, the reason the AZ bill offends so many people is NOT because illegal Mexicans will be targetted and forced to show their documentation… it’s because legal Mexican American citizens will be targeted as well, and there are millions of them. Like pornography (I know it when I see it) the new law leaves too much discretion up to individual police officers and is way too vague, to be constitutional.
Constitutional… you know, that thing that Right Wingers pretend to care so much about when it’s convenient. IMO the new law is not going to cut it. We’ll see.
Anyway, AZ doesn’t have the resources to put any teeth into the law - they already asked the federal government for money to train officers (so much for states being independent of the smothering federal octopus). Arizona can’t pay their own way. AZ can’t enforce the law equally - they do not have the money or the manpower. And the new law makes law enforcement subject to lawsuits if they dont enforce the law. AZ pretty much shot themselves in the foot with this, and it will be funny if they have to backtrack this because it’s bankrupting them.
The reason Obama hasn’t tackled immigration yet is the same reason Bush never tackled it - because none of the solutions are very satisfying, and all of the solutions are guaranteed to piss off one large segment of society or another.[/quote]
Yes I can vote, why would you think I could not vote?
Yes, Mexicans will most likely be targeted, so what? Did you know that we share a border with Mexico? If we shared a border with an Asian country, we would be profiling Asians, did you have a point to make here?
Constitutionality? Again, you have no idea what you are talking about. The SCOTUS has already ruled that profiling is legal, how do I know? Because it is allowed within the Federal Immigration Laws. Since you have done not a shred of research on your own, let alone probably didn’t read the AZ law, I will clarify. Terry vs Ohio gave MUCH more power to cops when dealing with the 4th amendment. The law was written behind many SCOTUS rulings, and mirrors the Federal Law, but it more watered down. In other words, Federal Law is actually tougher than the AZ law. Now you will tell me that states cannot enforce Federal Immigration Laws, wrong again. The 1996 Immigration Act signed by Clinton gave states the power to enforce Fed Laws through 287(g). Obama and the WH knows that this law is golden, which is why they won’t challenge it, imagine the shame when Obama (the Harvard Law grad) were to lose a legal challenge, based on a law that already exists.
The cost? Again you don’t understand the financial burden to Arizona, 2.7 Billion per year. They would spend much less than that on this program should they remove illegal aliens from their state.
Teeth? They already are the most aggressive state when it comes to enforcement, I can’t imagine them doing anything different when it comes to enforcement. Just that now they can question further the status of someone.
There is mythical Latino vote is just that, mythical. You have maybe 15% of the US population being Latino, while the other 85% is not. I would rather piss off the 15% than the 85%.
Just so you know, as far as Los Angeles’ boycott of Arizona, California has the exact same law on their books. Take a look at California Penal Code 834b, then tell the LA mayor and City Council to shut up already.
It is not the law being passed that has pissed people off, it is the enforcement that is pissing people off.
