I’ve seen Morimoto’s website. It’s wwww.morimoto.com, as I recall. The pictures don’t do justice to the decor, though – the lighting is constantly changing, so the blue dividers that you see in the picture cycle through an entire rainbow of colors.

ko and ike,
By another interesting twist of fate, I (or my father) have a hand in almost all the resturants that you two mentioned. My Dad’s company did the seating for the the Heathman (excellent food, I will have to go there for breakfast, also), Thai Orchid, and Typhoon. I just thought that it was interesting, though neither of you probably agree. Another note, if either of you are ever in the mood for pizza, I HIGHLY recommend Amalfi’s. It is on Fremont at about 46th (this is NE, I’m a Grant district boy). It is, handdown, the best pizza in Portland that I have had.

Nah, that is cool. As for pizza, I’ll have to give that place a go. Despite all the ravings, Escape from New York pizza didn’t really do it for me. Perhaps it was all the high expectations. Random observation: Anybody know how the Heathman scores with Zagat? I’m gonna have to go check. (I always like to compare my impressions with the so-called ‘standard’)

The Naked Chef is Jamie Oliver–now he has a new show called Oliver’s Twist. I lose my appetite whenever I watch his show. He has that fat red lip glistening with saliva all the time, kinda like Rick Barris of the Gong Show. I like The Iron Chef too. I like the later version better where Kaga’s voice is not dubbed. I personally think it would be best to used subtitles all the way. It’s kinda odd that the show is called, Ryori no Tetsujin (Ironmen of cooking), yet when Kaga summons the chefs, he called them “Iron Chef.” My wife, who is Japanese, had been trying to figure out for the longest time, what Japanese phrase Kaga calls out when he commences the battle, only to find out recently that it is French, “Allez cuisine.”

I’m not sure where has Zagat has us right now, we are always in the top 10.

I like some fusion, but some people are taking WAY to far,

As for Escape from New York, people go there expecting this great pizza, but that is not its appeal, (I used to live right behind it). It's decent pizza, you get a big slice for cheap, and it's fast. I won't drive over there just to get a slice of pizza, but if 'm in the neighborhood, I will always stop. I will have to check out Amalfis, it is not that far from us, we are in Hawthorne.

I double-checked this morning. 26/24/24/$41. Not that it’s always of much use, as it gives Jakes a 23 for decor (and I think the place is kindof a dump), but in general it’s a handy scale. While I’m addressing someone ‘in the know’, have you two ever hit up Wildwood? I’ve yet to have a chance to determine if it lives up to the hype or not. (Or El Gaucho for that matter)

Oh, that last one was me, if that wasn’t obvious. - Ike

Ike: Don’t go to El Gaucho! It’s WAY too expensive for what you actually get! Let me tell you some of my favorite places (and, Ko’s): up the street from us, is our “watering hole”, Chez Grill. Good Southwestern style of food, excellent service. Esparzas - serves Tex-Mex. This useto be SO good - haven’t been there in awhile. I like their ostrich burritos. Higgins: up the street from The Heathman. Great bar! They make the best gazpacho (other than Ko, of course).

I really think the SE side of town (where we live) has some outstanding places to eat! We're lucky in that we're within walking distance from many! Oh,and for what you pay at The Heathman, you do receive MORE than your money's worth of a quality and service! The breakfast there is TASTY, too! Haven't been to Wildwood, though - and would like to check it out.

Yes, that was my take on Gaucho as well, from all I’ve heard, although I’ve not been there. Higgins, I have heard of, but haven’t had a chance to investigate it yet. It’s going on the ‘To Do’ list. Along with breakfast at the Heathman, naturally. I remember reading that they serve breakfast last year (having been there only for dinner, and not knowing they were open othertimes), I was quite surprised. Breakfast is so under-represented, I’m ready to hit a top-notch joint which takes its breakfast seriously. On two completely unrelated notes: 1.) What kinda workouts are you two doing right now? No doubt it’ll be a little while before you get down here, I’m just curious. I started Ian King’s complete body program from the new version of Get Buffed! this week, myself. 2.) Care to clue me in on some of the forum text-manipulating commands? (ie, line break, italics, bold, etc.) I’m guessing they’re some sort of percent-sign+number combinations?

The “Iron Chef” is our favourite t.v program. Honest to god my wife and I watch it religiously. In fact a few months back they had an “Iron chef” marathon that lasted 12 hrs. We watched the whole damn thing. I’m totally fascinated by that show even though there are only a few dishes that ever look apetizing to me. I also used to love the “Two fat ladies”. I don’t think I would have eaten anything they ever made, but it was an entertaing show. I know, I need to get a life. Other than the Soprano’s though, it’s the only show t.v we watch.

Since you are familiar with so many great foods out there for us T-Men and have great recipe ideas, I wanted to ask you about a few grains and get your feedback on them. Do you know the value and how they rate on the glycemic index for Quinoa and Polenta? I always try to have some variety of carbs besides the usual oats and rice & beans. Thanks.

Ike: I have a LIST of places in Portland that are great for breakfast. One in particular, Zell’s Diner, stands out. Very good salmon hash, german pancakes, waffles and, yes, even the oatmeal is amazing. I’m told the omelettes are great, too (NOT a huge omelette person),also a turkey/apple sausage that’s YUMMY. Cameo Cafe is home of the “mile wide” pancake. Good there, too. Then Ko and I have our “recovery breakfast” choices - you know after a night of ahem drinking and what you need is a Bloody Mary to go with that steak and eggs breakfast…

What we're doing now for training? Our routine is going to officially change as of Monday. With Ko begining his MMA training and I'm beginning my boxing training - our weight training will now be "tweaked" so that it effectively enhances the MMA and boxing. Definitely more Renegade style than anything else.

As for the "magic" for forum text? "<" "p" ">" - (minus the " "), will get you a paragraph (place this tag at the beginning of a new paragraph). Bold: "<" "b" ">" at the beginning and a "<" "/b" ">" at the end (to close the tag). For italics: use a "i" instead. Underline: use a "u" instead.

Hope that helps. Patricia :-)

Short and sweet (With formatting!)

1. Care to share that list?

2. Renegade Training? Brutal, Ballsy. I like it.

3. You didn’t happen to sit in on Charles Staley’s open teleconference last week, did you? He had some interesting points regarding training those in MMA and other combat sports. I don’t mean to tease, but I’d probably be easier to explain in person.
