I gotto say i was disapointed, Kimbo came in good shape as did BIG COUNTRY (considering the gut and all). But hell i cant bench 264 any more and i dont think kimbo could either if the weight was a bag of sand. But i grew up street fighting, doing moay thai, and boxing so the fact kimbo came to this level of competition with such a weak ground game sadens me! i have no ground game prior 2 my the last 2 years and some wrestling in high school.
I decided i was going to start competing everything became about grappling. I X-ed the t.v and my nice ass leather wrap around couch just 2 put in a mat in my living room. I got three book shelfs of wrestling, greco roman, and jiu-jitsu books and still am only a blue belt. So why kimbo (wich i have wicked respect for) couldnt have done the same in the time he had baffels me. I believe he could have done so much more to prepare 4 this. He knew that it was part of the game he was gettin into so why is the only quetion i have. Roy on the other hand is a tank he had a game plan used his skills stuck to what he know and came out the victor, other than the ref stoppage for nothin but rabbit punches i got to give it to him ya know (sorry kimbo love you bro). kimbo comes back cool a respectable well rounded fighter wins better in my book.
i almost turned the tv off several times in this fight. its one thing to lose but the way i see it given an “opportunity” like this kimbo should have at least put on a show.

Few questions/points.
-What does his bench press have to do anything? When someone as talented as Roy has mount on you, pushing off = instant loss via armbar. Besides, the power comes from the hips. You are a blue belt, right?
-I agree that Kimbo should have gotten better in the last year, but bjj, just like any sport, can’t be learned by reading a few books and putting in some mat time. It takes years of practice. Considering that Kimbo is also trying to learn takedown defense, the clinch, MT, boxing, etc…, it would be silly to think that he could gain the skills needed to beat Roy in the span of a few months.

These responses are silly and uninformed. What did you expect? Kimbo is new to the sport and he was picked to fight the most talented and experienced guy that has ever fought on TUF. Kimbo went down swinging, but on the ground he just doesn’t have the skills to keep the fight competitive. Roy Nelson made Arlovski look like a rookie on the ground, and I shouldn’t have to tell you about Arlovski’s accomplishments in MMA.
i dont know about all of this. A fight is a fight and you go into 100% no matter what. do you think kimbo would’ve taken it easy hell no he’d knock Roy out. I think Roy was the better fighter of course and his control ofthe fight from the time they clinched showed that but i dont think how he finished the fight was the best idea. Considering Dana White only keeps exciting showman fighters in the ufc and seeing from this show that roy is interested in money. I would be putting everything out there if i was planning on staying in the ufc.
Come on…he had that fish out of water. All he needed to do was show the judges that he caught his trophy winning bass and then release it. At one point in the fight Roy was initially in the full mount and transitioned to side control and eventually the crucifix. He had absolutely no resistance to any of his ground attacks/moves. Now my whole idea may be wrong but I don’t think it is entirely out of the realm of plausible possibilities. Now if I had been Roy I probably would of progressively put a lil more power behind those shots so either Kimbo would give up or the ref would of stopped it sooner. But, I don’t fault Roy at all for the way he ended the fight. Both guys still went at it and it wasn’t like we didn’t get any action out of it.
Course a highlight reel knockout would of been nice =p

I wasn’t impressed with Nelson at all. And I think Kimbo had a poor showing for several reasons: He was just plain NERVOUS! He seemed a little too over cautious with his stand up. Probably too worried to let the punches fly and risk getting taken down.
He just seemed stiff and unsure but this is not surprising as he a ton of pressure on him - his first real MMA fight, getting bombarded with advice prior to the fight. He was just thinking too much. I think after he gets a few more fights under his belt, he’ll loosen up and feel more confident about just coming out and banging. Of course his ground game is a whole other ball of wax.
x2. The times that Kimbo ventured to throw some punches, he landed some solid shots. Round one he was WAYYYY too careful. Round two he should have come out swinging like one of his youtube vids. It would have been better for him to take a chance trading punches than to let it hit the ground again. As far as I could see, the only way that kimbo was going unconscious was from being suffocated by Roy’s giant gut…

Hmm… he’s actually been training mma for about 3 years now. In one of Kimbo’s last record streetfights against the Black guy with dreads, you see him go for a shoot takedown, so obviously he was getting into this in 2006.
Kimbo actually displayed decent mma skills when he submitted Ray Mercer in his first fight. That was under Bas Rutten’s training over 2 years ago. Since then I have not seen much improvement in his game. These days it’s hard to imagine Kimbo ever winning by submission. But perhaps I shouldn’t even be bringing this up, seeing as how most of the mma know-it-alls in every corner of the internet weren’t even watching this sport in 2007.
I actually think Kimbo’s fanboys are taking his loss worse than he is. It’s really sad to be honest.
It must be that much worse for Kimbo’s Bimbos on here to have their hopes and dreams crushed by some fat guy who eats BK whoppers. I mean this dude doesn’t count his carbs or anything and he just ran through your boy on the ground. Big Country is indeed the gatekeeper.

You are completely ignoring who he was facing. He submitted a boxer who thought that the fight was going to be striking only when he signed. Roy Nelson is a stud on the ground and makes people much better than Kimbo look bad, so what the hell did people expect? I’m not a Kimbo fanboy nor a Roy hater, but to have people say they think Kimbo should have put on a better show when when he is facing a guy 10x better than him is just silly.
Kimbo has been in MMA for 2 years. He has no wrestling background like a lot of fighters who pick up the groundwork much faster. He is also 35 years old. There is just no way he was going to learn enough skills to be competitive with Roy in the time between his last MMA fight and TUF. If anything, people should be impressed that Kimbo won the standup because Roy has pretty good hands. Roy was good enough to hang with Arlovski, Monson (who he beat imo), and Rothwell. Kimbo has fought cans. He got whooped by one and almost lost to the other (Thompson). use your heads peoples

what did i expect? i expected kimbo to throw some punches. while i laughed when the fight went to the ground i cringed when they were standing up. kimbo did nothing productive on his feet.

Did you expect him to swing with wild abandon? He had to keep the fight on his feet at all costs. He landed some nice punches but Roy took him down the second Kimbo hurt him.
Kimbo should have stayed with Bas or gotten in a good camp. I think his overall skill has stayed the same or actually gotten worse since the Mercer fight. I think we forget that he actually subed Mercer. He was with Bas for like 6 months before they got shitty with each other over some bullshit.

He’s with ATT now. We’ll see how much good that does pretty soon.
My guess…He’ll learn to sprawl, maybe a couple of sub defenses and still be a stand and bang fighter. The ufc will feed him a couple of utter crap stand and bang types, the first or second one will figure out with a couple months of good BJJ training and the ability to double leg shoot he’ll pwn kimbo.

Roy Nelson, one of the strongest? You cant be serious. Have you seen any of his other fights. Arlovski put him on his arse.
Nelson sucks and will lose against a more experienced fighter.
YOU can’t be serious. Is that the only fight of his that you’ve seen? I almost have to question if you even watched this fight…as Nelson dominated Arlovski on the ground.
Besides that, who on this TUF season has shown that they are even remotely close to Arlovski (a former UFC HW champ) in terms of skill or punching power? No, personally I don’t think Nelson will be wearing the belt any time soon, but he’s certainly one of the strongest fighters on this TUF season from what we’ve seen so far.
