I disagree with elano, you made the right call. And now you have a good story to tell, your the hero that took a creeper down.
A little off topic: I heard if someone downloads illegal porn on your wireless internet (you don’t password protect it) the FBI can seize you house and property and you are held liable. Is this true?
They can’t permanently deprive you of property in this manner. There is still a modicum of Due Process protection available… but lord nows they can probably make life miserable for you.
if the FBI can show your wireless network downloaded illegal porn they’ll likely have enough for a warrant, they’ll be able to do a complete search of all your computer files but without finding any files on your computer i don’t they can pin you with anything seriously criminal since there is little evidence of mens rea (guilty mindset), there’s generally no crime when you don’t have the guilt associated with the crime
if you shoot a gun into the air and the bullet comes down and kills someone without you knowing it, this isn’t murder you didn’t have the intent to kill. this however, is likely manslaughter
by the way there is no right to privacy in the bill of rights, the right to privacy is derived from the concept of due process
due process embodies those rights that are “essential to ordered liberty”
rights essential to ordered liberty are those rights that have been traditionally protected throughout the history of the US
the is a right to privacy of intimate conduct between consenting adults (lawrence v. texas) but there are public policy limits
maybe this guy never will/has been inappropirate with a minor but enjoys kiddie porn, due process does not protect this action as a private act because it creates a market for kiddie porn and the existence of this market is against the interest of the public
The welfare of children supersedes the guy’s individual rights. Potential means he hasn’t done it… YET!
You did the right thing, Tirib.
Trib I think you made the right call. Though I am a believer in strong privacy rights, he was quit stupid. By viewing this type material he is encouraging others to make it for sale. Where the joint arguement the worst that could be happing is that he is selling weed. I am sure a lot of people in your profession have been in this positon, and I am sure it is very uncomfortabe to deal with. I am sure it will work out fine for you and you business.
Fair play to you Sir, i would have been SORELY tempted to go round and beat 50 types of shit out of him.
Thats just plain sick, one of the few cases in which i would like to see Death Sentences come back to England.

I guess some of us respect the privacy of other people. I wouldn’t have been looking through his stuff to begin with. Even if I would have stumbled upon an illegal pic, I would have closed the folder and whistled about my business.
Earlier in your post, you did not say that he had an “extensive collection” I ASSUMED that there was a few pics downloaded off the net. If there were 30+ pics of the same kids, the sob should burn. Otherwise he is just like the millions of other regular joes who has seen a pic of a 15 year old girl. Like victome said, there are degrees.
All that is needed for evil to prosper is for good men to do nothing.
So you would do nothing in the face of evil? OK, at least we know where we stand.
Supposing you happened to walk by the guys house, and catch a glimpse of him filming two very young boys, naked, engaged in adult activity… You would just whistle on past? Really? I can’t believe that. It’s no different IMO. Making kiddie porn and supporting those who make kiddie porn amounts to the same thing.

AH man, come on thats f*cking disgusting to see written at this hour in the morning.
Good grief.

Your the pest control guy who calls the cops because a resident had a joint in the ash tray.
I would have minded my own business no offense. Hope you feel like a hero.
Agreed.

Do you think children volunteer to take part in these pictures? Or they do it for the money? What chance do these kids have after being subjected to something as horrible as this? They are messed up for the rest of there lives.
What do you reckon happens to these kids who the pornographers think might be a risk to there business afterwards? In some cases they are killed.
Are you totally fucking stupid?
Mind your own business? These children are being abused and this guy should just the other way because it’s better not to get involved?
People like you make me sick.
Tiribulus,
You did the right thing - no question about it. One thing that puzzles me, and seems to have been overlooked is this:
Why would a fucking sicko such as this guy hire a computer technician to fix his machine when he is fully aware of the incriminating evidence located on his hard drive?
Seems a bit counter intuitive for someone that has to live in the shadows of his own demons every day.
Thoughts?
Ok this guy may or may not be a child molester himself, he may just be answering to his sexual urges, in a manner which doesn’t directly harm any children, its all irrelevant. He broke US law and did something that anyone with a sound mind would consider disgusting. Law is supposed to stem from what the average person of sound mind thinks about various issues and if this forum can be used as a cross section then it is clear the average person thinks what he has done is disgusting.
Also through this man the people who made these videos and have shared them may be found and prosecuted. For all we know he could be the one who videod or partook in some of the child porn. Thats why it should be left up to the proper authorities to determine the severity of his crime. Hence what the OP did was commendable and in line with what most people would and should do. Not a hero just a good citizen.

I think that a lot of people who hold the right to privacy sacrosanct are missing the point here. I don’t give a crap who does what drug or who watches what porn, as long as the actors are consenting adults. There can be no such thing as child porn without the severe victimization of an innocent child.
I can do any drug or build any bomb or draw any picture without victimizing anybody. Child porn is NOT a victimless crime, and anybody who supports it (in the context of this argument, by downloading it) is validating it, and needs to be stopped.
And whoever said, “it’s like seeing a kid get raped and ignoring it” is just plain brilliant. If I ever saw somebody walk past someone else being victimized in such a way and do nothing, I’d first stop the assault and then I’d come back and pound some humanity through your thick skull. Seriously, that’s fucking cold.
Child pornography is not a crime per se (unless you declare it to be one) but the pictures of a crime happening.
It is like owning pictures of a bank robbery or a drug sale.
The only reason why the possession of such pictures is a “crime” is because most people think that pedophiles do not deserve any better and that you can therefore bend the rules a little bit.
Now, if someone PAID for such pics you might have a point, because that would probably encourage further crimes, BUT if this is some random shit he has found on the internet, WHO DID THIS GUY ACTUALLY HARM?
So, you noticed the files because of their names?
If the guy had labeled the files “Grandma’s Birthday Party” or “Utah Vacation” you wouldn’t have noticed?
You always hear about this happening and I always wonder why the tech guy is poking around random files.
But yes, you did the right thing.

Yeah, it’s exactly like a bank robbery.
A lot of people who deal in kiddie porn aren’t in it for the money (gasp!). They pay for images by trading images - a lot of images of a CG kiddie porn will be worth an image of a real child being raped.
Whether he just randomly found it on the internet, or whether he was involved in a bigger picture ring, the issue is the same. The proliferation and dissemination of child pornography encourages a market. This market requires child abuse to function. OP did the right thing.

Wow, making a troll post about kiddie porn. Not funny at all.
Wow, believe it or not most people ARE aloud to have opinions…
You must be fucking kidding.
Opinion? Yea, right - when it comes to kiddie porn, anyone who would turn a blind eye to that is a totally worthless asshole who should have his fucked up head examined…
You did the right thing Tirib, and that’s obvious to any normal human beings here.
Tirib -
Whether or not you did the right thing is not for anyone to decide (I happen to think you did the right thing) except the judge. What you did was most certainly the responsible thing.
We’re not talking about finding some pot in a guy’s house (ie a victimless crime). Those kids are victims.
For those defending this guy-- what if one of those boys was your son, little brother, or nephew? Does that change anything?
Kudos.
NOW for the question no one is asking: Did you get paid? ![]()
Well done sir!
I can’t believe people are actually thinking you should’ve minded your own business.
Elano, how old are you?
Strange. Who would send a computer to be fixed that had crap like that on it?
