6/21/15
Jiu jitsu Open mat rolled with 2 lightweight purple belts, one very technical, one very athletic, and a skilled lightweight blue belt. Did ok, felt decent.
6/23/15
Rolled a few rounds no-gi.
Judo class, intense warmup followed by drills and some good ne waza and nage waza radori, trained will all levels. Felt good. Worked my yoko otoshi.
6/24/15
Pulls:
Deadlifts:
5x135, 10x220, 5x260, 5x260, 4x280, 3x290
Chinups:
4x5xBW+15lb, 5xBW+20lb.
Headed to train gi jiu jitsu in a bit.
6/24/15–did make it to jiu jitsu
6/25/15
Overhead Presses:
95x5 115x5x5
2x8 incline reverse flys with 2 20lb db.
2x8 jungle gym bodyweight rows.
6/26/15
Squats:
135x5 155x5 165x5 185x2 195x3 195x5 195x5 195x5. Depth is getting better, feeling more in a groove with the squats. Has helped to work on breathing and focus on “tightness” especially in the upper back.
6/27/15
Bench press:
5x95 5x165 3x175 5x165 5x165, felt kind of sapped.
Judo open mat, randori with a tough brown belt for over an hour, did fairly well, but I have some weight/size on him.
6/28/15
Went to a no-gi seminar on the heel hook, no real training today.
Been a busy week with work, car troubles, and social obligations, thus not many workouts.
6/30/15
No gi jiu jitsu, missed first half but got in some decent rolling.
7/2/15
Pull workout.
Deadlifts: (conventional)
5x135, 5x185, 5x225, 5x275, 5x295, 2.5x305, 2.5x305 (failed somewheres above the knees on the 3rd rep of last 2 sets. mainly because of weight slipping out of my weakass grip.)
Chinups:
4x4xBW+25lb
As I have been busy with work, training has definitely taken a hit.
Have gotten in some judo and jiu jitsu training the past two weeks.
On sat 7/11 did a bench press workout right after judo training, working up to 177lb
On sun 7/12 did a single set of 100kettlebell swings with 53lb.
Have a jiu jitsu tournament planned for this weekend…
Just finished refurbishing/painting/moving into a new apt and work has started to calm down again so will be attempting to get back on track. Have been training judo/ jiu jitsu somewhat sporadically and aside from a few quick upper body workouts, not much strength or conditioning past few weeks.
Competed July 18 in IBJJF New York Summer Open Jiu jitsu tournament on 7/18. Better performance than last time probably because I didn’t cut weight. Won first match with an ankle lock, second match won by an advantage, and lost the semifinals match to a flying triangle choke thus taking bronze medal. Planning for gold next time…
7/4/15
Judo, some uchi komi, some randori…
sprained left intercostals during a sumi attempt on 8/4.
8/5/15
3 circuits: 25pushups, 25 squats (bw), 25 straight leg crunch, 10 chin-ups. minimal rib pain.
8/6/15
attempted to train no gi, rib pain much worse, my guess is will be back to normal in a week or two.
8/8/15 4 circuits: 25pushups, 25 squats, 25 straight leg crunch, 8 chinups.
Thanks for sharing the BJJ videos man, very cool.
Hoping for a speedy recovery from the recent injury.

Thanks! Seems to get a bit better each day.
8/11/15
2 circuits: 8chinups, 25squats, 25 pushups, 25 straight leg crunches.
1 set: 50 2hand swings with 53lb KB.
8/12/15
2.5mile jog at 10:15 pace.
Still have pain on twisting and lateral flexion, hopefully ready to train judo/jiujitsu next week.
8/13/15
Kettlebell Seesaw presses: 20x 16kg bells, 16x 20kg bells, 16 x 20kg bells.
2 sets strict pull-ups 6 reps, bodyweight.
Run: 30 mins, slow pace (?10min/mile) finished out with 5 high intensity interval sprints.
8/15/15
Some light judo and jiu jitsu training at open mat.
Muay thai class with some light sparring.
8/17/15
Gi jiu jitsu. Training feels pretty good just getting rib pain in a few live rolling positions (especially bottom positions and bridge-and-roll), skipping certain warm up techniques like cartwheels.
8/19/15
Gi jiu jistu. similar to 8/17.
8/20/15
First kettlebell workout in new apartment, don’t have the huge mat space of the last apartment (set up pull-up bar on a few puzzle mats in corner of living room) but a yoga mat in the center of the living room did just fine. Followed along with Steve Maxwell kettlebell class workout vid, used a 20kg which I at times switched for a 16kg. The workout is basically HIIT workout alternating basic kettlebell movements with bodyweight exercises with very short rest periods. He includes a pull-up ladder in the middle of it, I did 3x5 (reverse grip) chins followed by 3x3 chins; dead hang to chest to bar on all reps. took a few short breaks during the end of the workout. definitely feel like my conditioning is not where it was when I was doing HIIT KB workouts regularly.
8/22/15
Open mat judo training. Randori’d with a good brown belt and black belt which had quite a bit of height on me, however did pretty well and even landed a few standing shoulder throws.
Followed judo with muay thai training including some sparring some rounds with takedowns. Striking with takedowns is a lot of fun.
Muay thai class ended with a 500rep ab workout.
8/25/15
5 supersets:
5 chinups + 10 2arm long cycle clean&jerk with 2 35lb kettlebells
1.5-2min rest between supersets.
8/26/15
A few 5 rep sets on the bench press at work, maybe 155-165lb.
8/27/15
5 supersets:
5 chinups + 10 2arm snatches with 35lb kettlebells
1.5-2 min rest between supersets.
Been working mid-day to late evening this week, will plan to get back to jiu jitsu/judo next week.
8/30/15
Open mat jiu jitsu training rolled with a purple brown and a couple athletic blue belts. A little rusty after a week off.
8/31/15
Gi jiu jitsu with quite a bit of open guard positional rolling, rolled with a tough brown belt.
9/2/15
Visited a friends jiu jitsu class and helped teach rolled with his guys. Fun time
9/3/15
Judo, some uchi komi/nage komi. Then tournament style randori (one pair at a time with tournament rules and formalities). Played 3 times.
No strength or conditioning all week.
Been keeping up somewhat with my grappling training, strength and conditioning has been dwindling, really hard to do both when things get busy at work and I’m not able to sleep enough to recover from added stress.
Finally did get a round to doing a kettlebell conditioning workout tonight, followed along with this vid, basically just tabata timed circuits of swings, cleans, push press (I did jerks), and snatches.
Basic but just what I needed. I used 24kg and tore a sizable callus on my right hand… HIIT Tabata Kettlebell Workout - YouTube
