Ketosis and Alcohol

Simple Question: Will alcohol (and not beer or wine obviously, but straight EtOh as in vodka) boot you out of ketosis?

I’m pretty sure when your metabolizing alcohol you don’t burn any fat.

Yeah, I think you are right that it is preferentially consumed, but I don’t think it keeps you from returning to ketosis once the alcohol is used up.

True, but depending on the binge, that might be a while.

Word to the wise…if you are in ketosis be very, VERY wary of alchohol. What you are normally used to drinking on a given night might be a world of hurt. Your liver is basically changing its routine drastically when on ketosis by working double-time to produce ketones. Throw alchohol in that mix beyond a minimal point and you will be in a world of hurt.

I know from experience. I thought I threw my brains up one night when I drank while in full ketosis. It was not pleasant. I am not inexperienced when it comes to drinking either…

I had NO problem going from 300lbs to 215 back in the day in only a few months on a very very low carb diet non cal restricted and it was nothing for me to have a liter of whiskey a day on the rocks.

That along side my full slabs of ribs no sauce, bacon, eggs etc.

Not saying it was a wise or healthy choice but if a liter + a day didnt slow my progress a drink or two surely shouldnt

I used to wonder the same thing myself because there was always debate on the subject, so I tested my self for ketones on several different occasions when dinking straight alcohol, ie. vodka and club, Jack Daniels and diet coke or Bicardi and diet coke. I never booted myself out of ketosis and always was able to get down to 6% bodyfat.

At the risk of sounding like an idiot- why is it that beer and wine would not be considered alcohol? I always thought booze is booze. However, the diet i just started is geared towards Ketosis and my nutritionist did say a few glasses of wine are ok. Why is wine ok, but not vodka?

Also, every 18th meal is a carb load. How does the carb load affect Ketosis?

I have only been on this thing for 3 days-I did a test strip and I still am burning carbs. How long will it be until I start burning fat?

thanks!

Beer and wine will contain carbs , dry wine probably not that much, whereas rum, whisky, wodka etc contain zero carbs.

Therefore the carbs in beer and wine can throw you out, wodka won`t. It has a ahitload of calories though.

Carb loading interrupts it.

maybe 2-3 more days, depending on activity levels.
