Maximum overload during an exercise is achieved on the last rep of the last set. The preemptive sets only build you up for that last set. This is true even for extreme volume.

Let’s say you did leg press for 100 straight reps last week. This week you made it to 105. That’s overload. That’s progression.

Let’s say you did leg press for 5 reps at 500lbs last week. This week you did 6 reps or maybe you did 520lbs for 5 this time. That’s overload. That’s progression. Do you think you could achieve that by doing 5 straight sets of 500? If so, then go ahead. Do you think you could achieve that by doing 5 ramping sets of 180, 270, 360, 450, 500? If so, then great, go ahead.

My personal experience is that straight sets fatigue too much to have any overload during that last set. I’ve made more progress by doing some variation of ramping. That’s just how normal people lift, add weight to the bar. The “textbook lifters” and “article lifters” may do straight sets. Hell, I do straight sets on most secondary exercises and most small muscle exercises. But for the money lifts? You gotta ramp. I’ve only been at this for 6 months and I’ve figured that out.

ya, but volume is a form of overload. If you did 5 reps at 500lbs last week, and then 2x5 at 500lbs that is also overload. You just gotta figure out if you need more volume, more intensity, or more intesiveness.
