Kdjohn: Physical Philosophy & Iron Insights

Northern Ontario.

0/10, don’t recommend.

haha how far north?
I’m just outside Toronto

Thunder Bay area. AKA: Murder City.

Ontario. Sound grizzly as fuck man

Your ideal habitat

It’s pretty rough sometimes.

Where I used to live out west was literally “grizzly as fuck”. As in grizzly bears not that far out of most towns. And black bears. And cougars. Sometimes, just wandering through suburbs. Fun times.

Or as you hard as fuck bastards call them…

All that and you still beat my all time best 5k time. You’re a beast.

Thanks, buddy. Running is definitely easier for me thanks to being short and lighter. You’re at a disadvantage right off the bat being taller and heavier. Impact forces are a bitch.

We don’t get to choose our genetics. I’m more of a fast twitch guy, but not enough to be great at anything. I’ve always preferred repeat bouts of shorter things over long, slow events. I could dunk a basketball when I was 15 at 6’1" or 6’2" (can’t quite remember). I guess I’m kind of explosive but nothing crazy.

That’s a pretty eventful run rofl but you still pulled it out, congrats you northern beast!

Thanks for all the discussions on martial arts, I know that it got a little awkward briefly, but as per usual in this forum it ironed out with sensible adult conversation, and actually the ensuing conversation from the disagreement was great as well, so thanks all very illuminating stuff and really helpful for someone clueless like me.

Anytime, amigo! It’s my life’s passion and I’m always happy to talk about it.

Start time: 1245
Garage temp: 6C

Snatch high pull + power snatch

  • 10x4+1 @ 100

Messing around with various high pull/lateral raise/upright rows

  • A few

Squat (2ct pause)

  • 3x8 @ 205

Bench

  • 135x5
  • 155x5
  • 175x5

EZ bar PJR pullover (myo-reps)

  • 12+3+3+3+2 @ 100

Notes:

  • So, the plan’s gonna change. God Is A Beast only has me hitting the Olympic lifts once a week, but seeing as they’re skill-based lifts, they thrive on frequency. I want to get that high volume of GIAB, but with additional frequency. This led me to adding all these specialized exercises and it was just getting too complicated (all this thinking was done during the random shoulder/trap stuff). The fact is I’m just not strong enough to need a bunch of specialized exercises, I just need to get stronger.
  • I’m gonna switch to Black Army Jacket. It’s in the same vein as GIAB, but with additional frequency by having the supplemental not alternating with the main work week-to-week. Assistance will remain the same in terms of exercises, and I’ll stick with myo-reps for most of them because it’s brief and intense.

I’m in the same boat. I kind of like the look of Brian Alsruh’s Dark Horse, but the Westside aspect of dynamic work pushes me away. I don’t have chains, bands, or different bars. It’s not that I think they’re wrong and that stuff doesn’t work. I just don’t think I need it. I haven’t conquered the standard barbell yet.

You could always just drop the accommodating resistance on that portion. I think Brian gives the OK for that in the video with the caveat that it’s watering down the program. I think CT has a few articles on how to adjust percentages of lifts when you’re going “raw” too.

Setting up bands with my home rig would be way too much of a PITA for me to even consider it, but chains have long been intriguing. You’ll note that I still haven’t pulled that trigger because, they’re also probably a PITA haha.

  • Happy with this session. Hips are really achy today, though. Probably from the 10 sets of snatch pulls and paused squats yesterday. I’ll just roll it out tonight and take a hot epsom salt bath or contrast shower.

Honestly Frank I agree with this in my own head and you’re stronger than me in most things, but having done it, it works and who cares if you aren’t “strong” enough. I doubt you’ll ever feel that way, I’d say give it a go, just get some cheap light bands just a pair of the two lowest resistence bands will set you back a few bucks but will cater for the whole program (you can always add the two bands together to get a third level of band but I doubt you’d need it).

I honestly didn’t think much of it doing it at the time, but Brian swears by them and the program works, so I’ve gotta give them some credit! You’ll never know until you try!

I could definitely benefit from speed work. Chains are cool but I think it would be ridiculous to be using chains with 135 on the bar!

A couple of gyms I’ve been in have chains on collars, you just slide them on like normal plates.

@kdjohn killing it in here mate

Why? Just ridiculous in your head.

Also, you can do speed work without equipment, which I love. Just control the descent for a while until you can go to a faster eccentric. Some people (like me) will never be able to and that’s okay. Gonna be doing speed work myself soon RAW, and using 55-65%

So that’s like 90 kgs. If I were to use bands that would 60-70 kgs + bands.

Spoiler: I’ve already done it with 135 lbs and bands, and nobody ever mocked me, but asked me what the hell was with these and people were pretty excited about it is all

You could just start each session with 15 mins of olifting for activation purpose which would double down at practice work!
