Kdjohn: Physical Philosophy & Iron Insights

I went back and looked at my next cycle, but I couldn’t find a place for them. I’m planning to run everything as a super or giant set if I can.

17/04/2021 PART 2

Start time: 1945
Outside temp: 8C

Running

  • 2.5km, approx. 00:12:51

Walking lunges

  • 25 reps/side @ BW

Single leg calf raises

  • 2x15 @ BW

Tibialis raises

  • 2x15 @ 15

Notes:

  • Bleh, no PR here today. Oh well. I know I spouted a bunch of hoopla about setting crazy times, but I need to remember that all this aerobic work is about aiding strength first and foremost; any improvements in time need to come through the gradual process of simply adapting to the repeated stimulus, instead of pushing hard.
  • On a happier note, the sun was shining while I did this without a cloud in the sky, which made for a very pleasant experience.

Start time: 0815
Outside temp: -3C

Ruck walk

  • 7km w/ 55lb pack, approx. 01:11:41

Notes:

  • Had to switch things around today and do the walk first, because we’re expected to get a nasty storm rolling through this evening (plus more Zoom meetings like yesterday). Doing this fasted was very uncomfortable, and my traps were absolutely screaming.
  • Strength sessions feel good, but endurance is dipping. Probably need to eat more, specifically carbs. I’m finding myself dropping the amount of carbs I’m eating when I’m short on time during the day, which is no bueno for a carb-fuelled being like me.

Do you particularly care about the source? I was always big on honey. I figure it comes from nature, bears eat it and they’re jacked, and it’s about as simple as it gets. I’ve known a few lifters that were big into using it for energy, to include some of your countrymen ala Thor and Benni, and Paul Anderson took to mixing it with milk.

@kdjohn

I second the honey. If you have access to Costco, they sell raw honeycomb from Savannah Bee company for a VERY reasonable price

That sucks. It was looking so nice up there with 8C temps. Apparently we might be getting snow this week, but it’ll be sunny and 60 today.

Not picky, and I love honey. Thanks for reminding me.

Wow, this sounds like a power-packed snack. Gonna have to try that sometime.

No, there’s no Costco here. The city got greedy and needlessly bureaucratic when Costco tried to open a location, so Costco told the city, “Don’t call us, we’re call you.” Makes me mad. I would like to find some honeycomb from a local source, though.

I know, it’s been very pleasant here lately. I do enjoy colder temperatures, though. Anything above 10C I start whining is too hot.

The storm we’re getting is supposed to be snow/sleet and crazy winds. Are you central- US? Wonder if it’s the same front as us.

For sure. He’d drink it during training sessions. Believed it was a major contributor to his strength. If you went skim, it would just be pure carbs and protein. I’m pretty sure that’s what Plasma is, haha.

Speaking of Plazma, I finally went and looked at the ingredients… only to realize I basically make the same thing as my pre/intra/post training drink. Sodium, creatine/BCAA mix, lemon juice (electrolytes), some kind of simple sugar, magnesium after the session. For a fraction of the cost.

I can’t even wrap my brain around drinking something during a workout, let alone that thing being critical to the success OF my workout. And then as a low carb guy, Indigo doesn’t make much sense to me, and as a dude that gets up to train at 0315, MicroPA is out because you’re supposed to take it an hour before training…

Finibars are yummy though. I like them before races.

I have a similar experience everytime I go to the wet market.
I see “exotic” ingredients in products selling for premium prices selling for literally pennies

Haha that gif my man

That’s my wee girl on a daily basis :man_facepalming:

Every time I’m reminded there’s no Costco here, I want to throw a tantrum.

I miss Costco.

Yep. I’m sure @T3hPwnisher will get more of whatever we get down here. He’s north of me. He’s probably looking forward to the snow shoveling workouts, though.

I’ve been blessed with a driveway that faces the sun this time around. It’s pretty much self-resolving.

Benedikt Magnusson also drank coca-cola intra-workout (not kidding). Keep it simple!

A mayonnaise out of the jar eating ultra marathoner once said “When the engine is hot enough, it’ll burn anything”

That, “Up the dose” and “There is no overtraining: just undereating” are probably the only 3 principles anyone needs for nutrition.

  • 145x5
  • 165x5
  • 185x5
  • 3x5 @ 145
  • SS W/ band dislocations, 3x10

Barbell row

  • 3x15 @ 185

  • 1x25+25 @ 25

Notes:

  • Quick, simple, successful. This was a good session.
  • I gotta brag for a bit here, because I’m finally in a good place with training and my mentality surrounding it. I’m happy with the lifts I’m focusing on, I’m content with my aerobic pursuits, and while I’m not particularly lean, when I sit down and allow my mind to scan my body, I feel good; I feel healthy. Because of this… serenity surrounding training, I’m no longer allowing it to take up so much time in my brain, which is letting me focus on other parts of my life more. It’s a great feeling.

It’s funny that you mention honey as it has been a favorite among keto advocates/influencers as an intermittent carb source to fix the issue caused by their long-term diet (SHBG, free T…)

Well sometimes for my long workouts (1h30+) or when I haven’t eaten for a while prior to the session, I add a bit of carbs and BCAA in my water. Do I feel an effect? No. But that’s not because we don’t feel something that it’s not having an effect on our body, like for instance caffeine. It’s still substracts that are going to be used in priority during the session. At the very least, placebo effect and it’s very cheap ahah

I tried myo-reps for these exercises but 3 reps wasn’t cutting it… I think indeed 5 is better, ncie idea!

Also nice that you’re feeling great!
