If someone angrily told you they were going to go death con on, say, you and your family, what would you take it as? Not a threat? By even using the word death in their warning, whether or not they were incorrectly using a term, what would your reaction be?

If they said it to me/my family specifically? Beating them to a pulp.
If they said it in a blanket statement about people like me, and on Twitter? Nothing at all.
The difference here is that Kanye didn’t name drop anyone, or say it to anyones face. Big difference.

Remember this was a money decision.
Some corporate big wig at Adidas took about 30 seconds to decide that the company would make more money moving forward without paying Kanye $200 million per year.
I don’t think the specific words mattered much.
If that group you were part of was a minority with a centuries long history of being massacred and expelled from where you live, and knowing that all of those mass murder incidents started with blanket statements, maybe you would feel differently. Jews have been targeted for over a thousand years before the concept of African-American existed. Jews lived in ghettos before the United States even existed. Kanye, being semiliterate, wouldn’t be aware of this history or that he’s just a stooge repeating things that were first said in France in the 19th century. Back then it wasn’t on Twitter but in newspapers.

Or, being aware of the Nazi past of its founders, they found Kanye’s remarks unsetting and a reminder of an ugly moment in German history.

Nothing personal, I do value your input on Tnation. It seems with several issues including antisemitism many people are unwilling or incapable of using nuance or context. It doesn’t end an issue or even in good faith attempt to understand let alone to solve a problem.

Ha , ha. Don’t worry I’m well aware they don’t play as large a role as they have in the past. Still everytime they play a song, the artist with copyright gets a royalty payment.
It’s not like radio stations don’t exist anymore, there is still big money involved.

Yes I agree, that statement was always going to be interpreted badly. Whether his intent was more nuanced or not it generalizes. I can see how that would offend Jewish people. Thank you for pointing out to me what he actually said. He’s definitely guilty, on this aspect, but does the punishment fit the crime? Seems like they went Defcon 1 on him.

What I interpreted “I’m going Death Con 3” as (seriously): “I’m going to complain about Jews and talk about their overrepresentation in certain places and movements on social media platforms.”

I said he might feel different if, not that he would. And besides, he isn’t Jewish so he couldn’t know how it would feel regardless. Saying his wife is Jewish is not the same as being Jewish.
