emm… i only watched his videos in segments/interviews. Had some pretty good ideas about mind-body connection and his approach to life is slightly more sophisticated than other bocybuilders, don’t you agree?
I found his mind quite interesting. He was anything but your run of the mill bodybuilder.
I think he has a very slow, drawn out way of saying something very simple that every other bodybuilder says as well. He may choose his words a bit differently, but the things he’s advocating for are no different than anyone else in bodybuilding, IMO.

I’m not saying he’s wrong, and I’m not saying I dislike the guy for it, but choosing different words and bloviating over the same simple concepts that made every other successful bodybuilder successful is not sign of a great mind, I think is what justmatt was eluding to.
That is very true. I guess you could say that it’s annoying when a bodybuilder who tries to give advice does this since the content is stays the same but the form changed. But if he was an artist, then it would be a different story. If you convey a very simple concept with fancy ways of expression (making a feature film out of an idea that could be summed up in one sentence, for instance) then you might be praised for your creativity. But I get your point.

err yeah.

When a camera is rolling anyone can be seen as humble/great/intelligent/thoughtful/sophisticated/romantic.

What happens off camera is where the meat is. Such examples like Arnold, who knew what he was like off camera if all you ever saw was him in the movies?

Same with every other actor, BB’er, powerlifter and strongman. Dont take what you see as gospel because they look and sound great for the cameras.
I think it’s weird that you’re using Arnold as an example. I think Pumping Iron was actually pretty revealing about his character. He came off as a self-aggrandizing womanizer in that movie, and it seems like that’s relatively accurate, given what we now know about him.
I was on about movies such as terminator, predator and the like.

“OH MY GAWD HE IS SO KEWL! How can I think up such great catchphrases!”

That sort of thing.

I dunno man. I’ve never seen another bodybuilder who turned on all the burners in his shitty apartment to make it 120 degrees and has the haircut of one of those Predator aliens.
The guy is certainly eccentric, no doubt about that. I don’t take that as a sign of a great mind, or even above average mind to be honest.
Good gawd, he’s probably just high.

I honestly laugh every time this issue comes up as if you are getting judged on eloquent use of english in bodybuilding.

You suddenly have to fall into a category of “all smart” or “all dumb using big words”>

Meanwhile, most of the people judging would do WAY worse in front of a camera than the guy they are criticizing.

You ever see the Making of PUmping Iron? Arnold says something to the effect of “if you just see the competition, than you’ve seen everything there is in 10 minutes. But if you see the personalities behind it all, then you have a story.”

I’m just commenting on his personality, if all we’re interested in is the physique then they wouldn’t be making videos with interviews and everything. I don’t believe I’ve even mentioned his physique and I’m not trying to correlate the two, so I don’t know what you’re getting at.

I didn’t write anything close to that. Honestly, the feeling I get from his is that he’s of average intelligence. But things like intelligence can be tricky without actually knowing someone so my opinion is all speculation, I was just commenting on another poster’s opinion. You can feel free to add your own opinion, or continue to poke fun at mine, I don’t mind either way.

You mean like how well you did on camera? Stellar performance, brah.

Besides, food critics normally aren’t also the best chefs in the world, are they?

…but…most of the people here aren’t just commenting on “personality”. They are judging his intelligence…which is strange given that you can’t possibly tell that from how someone does on camera.

You didn’t, but the fact that this many people keep talking about his speech shows that others are.

Most people are “average”…including most of the ones talking about how smart he is. It just seems strange since all you can tell from his speech on camera is that he isn’t illiterate and actually isn’t “below average” by any substantial degree.

hey, I think I did fine on camera considering every day was a surprise as to what we were doing.

Either way, just like you can judge that on film…that isn’t even half the story of what went on.

I just do’t understand the focus on his intelligence when he is speaking well enough to not gain much criticism at all other than nitpicking his use of words.

Really shouldn’t surprisr you, your mind is designed to make snap judgements.

Imagine how exhausting it would be if you held off on forming your opinion of everyone you met until you had been exposed to them for several hours?

Oh…for sure…but again, this is bodybuilding. This is like judging a offensive lineman for his ability to do calculus.

Bodybuilding has so few "good speakers’ that if anything, we should be giving him credit for being able to complete sentences and walk at the same time.
Professor X wrote:

Who in this thread has attempted to degrade Kai’s physique based on his (in)ability to articulate his thoughts?

Except there’s hundreds of people who have met Kai in person at seminars and have said that he was humble and very helpful.

Who said someone was degrading how he looked?

So then what’s the point of your attempted analogy, again? Because here I was thinking it was supposed to be about judging someone’s ability to perform some task (play football/bodybuild) based on an irrelevant factor (solving calc equations/speaking well).

I mean, it definitely couldn’t have been about judging his intelligence based on how well he speaks, because the ability to speak well certainly isn’t irrelevant when attempting to judge intelligence.

very simply that focusing on his “articulate speech” is not what he is there for.

There is nothing wrong with the analogy.

Uhm, how does his speech affect his stage performance?

Are you just arguing for the sake of it?

Uh, what?

This was pretty weak for you. At least have a point next time.
