I was just curious if there are any U.S. Coast Guard members on this site. I just joined and I ship out for PSTP on 7 Sept. I have orders to USCGC Thetis (Key West) after Pit Stop.
I’m prior service (Marines) so I know about the military lifestyle, but I have no idea what to expect on a Coast Guard cutter. I’d like to hear from anyone who is in the CG, who could give me some info…

Key West? Sounds like a rough duty station.
A bunch of my old co-workers are ex-Coasties as is one of my buddies sons.
Just remember the CG is about saving lives, not taking them.

Both my Sister and Brother-in-law are in the Coast Guard both of which are Chief Boatswain Mates. My Brother-in-law has just recently changed units but he was a Company Commander and his company’s were typically prior service recruits and my Sister was a section Commander for the Company Commanders until her unit was just recently changed as well so whatever questions you have PM me and I can possibly put you in contact with someone who will give you the answers you need.
Ok this is another question that is probably stupid, is it the same in the coast guard where if one goes to college and gets a degree they can enter as an officer? I’m not exactly sure how it works, but my basic knowledge about the subject is that if you go to college you can be an officer. Does it matter what degree you get?

To be an officer in any branch of the military, you must have a bachellor’s degree. It doesn’t matter what in. You’re degree won’t have crap to do with where they put you. You can also apply to get into any of the military acadamies (West point, Naval Acadamy, Air Force Acadamy, or Coast Guard acadamy) and get your degree on their dime.
The degree isn’t the only prerequisite, however. You must pass all the screening and background checks. Just go talk to a recruiter.
