I just got some ZMAs and I know not take them with calcium products…however I’m a skim milk a holic. Let alone the fact that all Whey’s, caseins, and Cottage Cheese contain skim. There really is no meal in a day that there isn’t SOME calcium being digested. I have had it for 2 days and both took it 30 minutes before my cottage cheese and muscle milk bed time snack, and that was roughly 1-2 hours after dinner. Is this alright?
Sounds good. I usually take my ZMA + Melatonin about 2.5 hours after my second-to-last meal. Then, half an hour after ZMA/M, I have my last meal (usually cottage cheese or a protein shake).
Since the above reads a bit more complicated than I’d like, here is a timeline:
7.00pm: dinner
9.30pm: ZMA/Melatonin
10.00pm: protein shake.
Dig?
Works great for me; ZMA makes me sleep like a baby and the melatonin helps make my sleep more ‘restful.’ Prepare for some ridiculous dreams on ZMA; they wear off (or you get used to them, either/or) after a couple weeks.
Try not to eat a lot of dairy the meal before you take the ZMA. I never really noticed any difference with ZMA when I took it after eating dairy two hours before (didn’t remember any dreams if I did dream), and just last night I made it a point to avoid calcium in my meal and I had one of the longest-winded dreams I’ve ever had in my life.
It could be a fluke, but if you’re not getting the results you’re expecting, give it a shot.
Not a fluke, I can’t remember my dream now, but I know it was like a WHOLE day long. Where as usually my dreams are quick, and random and I’m awake…this was like watching a bloody movie.
Question, must it be taken around bed time to really take in the full effects of a better sleep, why would it not work if I took it around lunch?
I mean after all this is a vitamin going into your Daily Value…never heard of Beforebed Value.
yep I too have just started taking ZMA and was a person who could not remember their dreams at all; but know they are becoming more and more odd.
Also ZMA puts me right out a few minutes after my head hits the pillow.
I follow the same kinda timeline that was posted above.

Nope, it would take at least 3 hours for dinner to digest, 1 to 2 hours isn’t sufficient time.
You are right in giving it 30 min to digest before bedtime snack.
It’s been talked about; if ZMA doesn’t make you drowsy (it does make me drowsy, but I don’t know if that’s Pavlovian or not) … then, I seem to recall hearing you can split it up during the day.
Hopefully some other members who use this method will chime in?

I believe that magnesium acts as a sedative slightly, so it may help knock you out if you take it before bed. I’ve taken ZMA personally and have had to stay up for multible hours afterwards and was fine though. I take it before bed, but if you have to take it during the afternoon, I wouldn’t worry about it.
since your suppose to take ZMA’s 30-60min prior to sleep along with avoiding calcium while taking it…wouldn’t it be best to take ZMA 60 minutes prior to sleep and the digest a slow digesting protein such as cottage cheese or a casein protein shake immediately before sleep?
i’ll be supplementing with ZMA and a calcium caseinate shake in college and would also like to know the optimal timing of this…

I take my ZMA and wait 45-60 mins and then take my pre-bed meal.
As do I. If you wait an hour, and then take any form of cassein.
