Joining Army. Help?

I’m currently looking at the jobs and one I was interested in was Combat Engineer. The link describes the job and what you will learn how to do. Combat Engineer | goarmy.com

Anyways. I’ve had a strong interest in doing something with the police force. Is the explosives training in this job enough qualification for a bomb squad or something of that such to consider you experienced enough? I also thought about Military Police. Can anyone take me more in depth on these things?

Also, could any soldiers possibly post and tell me their job and what they do? I’m trying to understand the jobs more than the pamphlet describes them. It would help a lot in my quest for a job in the Military.

if you want to do bomb squad, go EOD. If your not familiar with what they do, go watch “The Hurt Locker”. Outside that, I wouldn’t go MP, everyone enlisted will hate you, and the police force on the civilian side don’t care about what your job inside was. So you could be an admin for 4 years and go be a cop after your done, or be infantry and go be a cop on the outside. Do not go MP because you want to be a cop on the outside.

As a combat engineer you will not be qualified to do much ordinance disposal, you will need to go EOD. As a newly enlisted soldier you will be a mine prober. You and your wooden stick, probing in to the ground at a 45 degree angle.

Good advice here. I’ll second and third staying away from becoming an MP if you want to be police outside of the military.

I had a buddy in the Army who went EOD. Some of the training they do is pretty taxing. I can’t recall everything he told me that he went through in trianing, but some of the stuff You’ll be doing is a lot of running with a bomb suit on, carrying around up to 100 lbs. of ordinance for hours, having to become familiar with many , many different bomb makeups and shit. It’s not easy that’s for sure, but he told me that it’s a really kick back job and most of the time you really aren’t doing anything at all.

I wouldn’t know much. Have you thought of anything other that EOD or police? I advised my cousin to look into UAV piloting. Those guys that sit in front of really big computer screen and fly those radio controlled un-manned drones and shit. They get great jobs when they leave the service. I remember when I was stationed at the BNCOC in Fort Huachuca in AZ, one of the Master Sergeants in charge of UAV pilot training kept trying to get me to switch my MOS to that one, kept telling me about how much money you can make when you leave the Army.

Well I have thought about other options in the Military. I actually have some training in computer programming and A + certified. As far as the jobs in the Military that do work with computers, communication, networking, etc; I’ve read on the Army website about some of the jobs but just don’t know exactly what they do. Seems way different than any computer classes I’ve taken/seen. Any other insight would be appreciated.

have ypu looked into any police departments in your area? you might not even need to go into the Army…

i’ve been in the Infantry for 16 yrs (3 active, 13 Guard), and am also a police officer on my dept’s bomb unit. i tend to suggest people go Infantry (unless they’re femaale) if they want to be a cop, since they get a wider amount of training and experience than the average MP does. you could go EOD, but if you don’t pass the EOD course, you’re gonna need to find a new MOS…

also, i don’t know if military EOD cert transfers toa civilian agency. it should, since it’s longer and more in-depth, but it might not…
