I don’t really care for Mencia, Rogan is okay sometimes. But both are comedic Steven Hawkings compared to Dane Cook. He blows.

i think the problem people have with his name change is that he did it intentionally to emphasize something he is really not. By using his real name, he would have a harder time getting away with the mexican jokes that he uses. but as carlos mencia, nobody even thinks twice.

Dane Cook is half and half with me. Most of his stuff is just “meh” to me, but he’ll have one or two jokes that have me rolling. And sometimes that’s enough to carry a show, other times, not.
That video is pretty damn funny. Joe Rogan’s Myspace has some more infomation on the whole thing.

And while I’ve always liked Rogan from way back, he’s never gotten the notoriety in the comedic world that Mencia has. Rogan would never be a name for much had it not been for fear factor. But you still have to give him props for the commando style raid on Mencia. Doing that kind of stuff these days can get you ostracized - very not PC and that takes guts to do.

I don’t think it’s jealousy at all. Sure, the guy got a show on CC and is making some nice coin now, but I really could give a rat’s ass about that.
I just don’t think he’s funny at all. I think he’s a one trick humor pony and that’s all he’s got.

Before seeing all this crap I wasn’t much of a fan of Joe Rogan. I gave him points for being a big MMA fan, but that’s it. However, I spent about 2 hours last night on youtube checking out some of his stuff and honestly, I’d put him up there with Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, and Richard Pryor. Every bit I saw him do I laughed my ass off. The one about Noah’s Ark is hilarious. And King Kong and humans being monkeys, I was in tears. Not to mention the guy actually seems to be pretty intelligent. I used to think he was an assclown but really, the guy has got my respect.

I’ve laughed at Carlos Mencia’s stuff on occasion and I’m sure he’s not the only one stealing material from other comedians but they fact that he does puts him down a notch in my book. I’d be more likely to avoid his show now than before.

I think the beef is with the sheer amount of material Mencia has been jacking since he started, coupled with the fact that he’s now doing other’s bits on his show which is netting him millions. If you’re going to be a comic, the majority of your material should be your own shit, or stuff your writers did for you, and apparently his HBO special that got the ball rolling towards his Comedy Central gig was a complete rip off.
Rogan has a little blog about the incident explaining a little bit about the background to the whole thing.

I’m quite a comedy connoisseur and have watched 100s, probably 1000s of hours of stand-up. Let me tell you that LOTS of them steal from each other.
They may craft the joke and tell it differently, but the practice of trading jokes is very common.
