JJackKrash's Training/Ski Log

LS, you are right, I need to keep a better routine. Murl, I thought about farmers walks today, then thought better of it. I was spent.

Deads, 1’s day, TM 430.

45 x 10, 135 x 10, 225 x10, 325 x 5, 265 x 3, 410 x 4 (Cheap Rep PR). Finisher: 315 x 15 (lungs on fire).

GM’s: strict and very, very slow: 45 x 10, 90 x 10, 145 x 10.

Hamstring curls: light x 20.

Notes: All deads were touch-and-go, except the money set. I unloaded on the bottom, but took no rest. My goal was 5, but 4 was a grinder–5 would not have gone. I am having form issues. I cannot get the feel of pulling the weight instead of picking it up. My leverages are shit. I would like to hit a seminar or something to get some instruction. (I wish I could take Rick up on his offer and head to Chicago.) The finisher was a real gasser. I think I could get 20 with a little conditioning. GMs were light, but I feel like I need to work into these slowly. No skinny-kid shenanigans today. All-in-all a pretty good day. [/quote]

You’re a strong squatter and With your leverages I’d bet you would get a lot of mileage out of sumo deadlifting.

Excellent pressing there, too, jj

Hmm. I have been curious about sumo. I have never tried it. Any tips starting out?

I’m no expert, but I find that getting as close to the bar as possible really helps. That forces a wider-than-how-you-squat stance but reduces the lever arm your back makes. Squeeze the bar off the floor, “pushing the floor away,” and pull it into your body. Once past the knees really get the hips to the bar. This is all meat’s advice, nothing original here.

Hardest part for me is breaking it from the floor, But if I can do that, it’s going up.

Its hard to sumo deadlift in a regular gym, cuz they don’t have the long bars. i tried it once and damn near cut my toes off.

Unless you are under 5’ tall…

Which is easier on the back…sumo or conventional?

Give sumo a try. For me it works much better than conv. Pushing the outsides of your feet against the outer sides of your Chucks is a great tip I recently learned to “spread the floor”.

And to answer Strick’s question, sumo is MUCH easier on my back.

Thanks, Kimba. I will definitely have to give it a try. Hell, with long arms and short legs, you would think it would be easier. We’ll see.

Sqwuaaats. TM 405. 1’s day.

Squats: 45 x10, 135 x 10, 225 x 5, 305 x 5, 345 x 3, 385 x 6.

Zercher Lift (above knee). 135 x 1, 225 x 1, 315 x 1, 365 x no go, 345 x 1.

Front Squats: 225 x 5 (ATG).

Notes: Frickin’ zoo again tonight, I just couldn’t get in earlier. Squats went ok tonight, I hit good depth on the money set and might of had one left in the tank. I need to work on how I hold the bar, and 365 will go on the Zerchers. I looked like a T-Rex with baby arms on 345 and it still went. At least I got a “holy fuck, dude” from the guy cutting his 185 squats high in the rack next to me. I also need to work on how I hold the bar on front squats. I had a bunch left in me, but felt like I was getting choked out. I’ll drop the weight on these and work on form.

Nice work Jack. I think I might stalk some new gyms so I can get that ‘holy fuck’ response. My ego needs it. Even just for a day. For front skwats the only way I have made them work is by feeling choked.

I look like a Trex all of the time.

Shit, Pete, you move more weight than most freight trains. If you tried lifting in my gym, the villagers would probably get scared and run you out of town with pitchforks and straw torches.

T-rex with baby arms? Dang, I would’ve loved to have seen that.

That is some serious weight being moved. Frankly, way more than I’ve ever seen moved in person.

Great training Jack. I find the higher I get my elbows with front squats the better groove I have on my delts to keep the bar in. Your zerchers are really getting up there.

Thanks, Kimba, for the encouragement. Steve, thanks for the tip. I have not found any good place to hold the bar for front squats. I think I just need to wipe out the sand and suck it up. Front squats just plain suck.

Bench day, TM 285, 1’s

Bench: 45 x 30, 135 x 15, 185 x 10, 215 x 5, 240 x3, 275 x 3. (should have been 270, but I misread my log).

Incline DB Bench: 75 x 10, 100 x 8. (Tried 110s after, but could not get them in position to press).

Krock Rows: 130 x 20, 150 x 10 (Rep PR +2 Reps).

Flat Bench Finisher: 205 x 10 (going backwards on these)

Notes: My bench is going backwards, in both limit strength and work capacity. I am pretty sure 300 would not have gone today. I need to increase my assistance work. But I was happy with Krock Rows, although they torched my lower back. I was going to also do BB rows, but that was not happening after the Krock Rows. I also wanted to incline with 110s, but I just could not get them into position! I need a workout for that so that I can get in a workout, I guess. Starting a short deload tomorrow.

Krock rows with 150 for 10…WTF. Thats awesome. You are really making Steelyd type increases. I wouldn’t worry about your finisher bench. It is after all a finisher and not a main exercise.

Nice work. And what Steve says. Also, bench can fluctuate so much due to little variables.

Thanks, guys. I appreciate the feedback.

Deadlift/press/deload,f-around day.

Clean and Press singles, with brief rest: 135 x 20.

Clean and Press: 185 x 1.

Clean and Press 205 x 0, 0, 0, 0, 0. Damn I just couldn’t catch it.

Sumo Deadlift: 225 x 1, 295 x1, 345 x 1, 395 x1, 445 x 0.

Notes: Deload day, and I am guessing I won’t get to lift tomorrow (Easter and all), so I just screwed around today. Got my lungs going a little with a bunch of clean and press singles from the floor. Then I tried 185, and it was pretty easy, so I tried 205 and it just would not go. I got them to my shoulders, but could not catch them. I have never really done cleans before so its not a shocker. I guess I need more explosion or I need to drop into a squat. Also, Sumo deadlifts are freaky. The bar does not feel like it wants to move off the floor, then boom, its up. 395 was easy, 445 would not budge. I am not sure what to think about Sumo’s but I will likely work them in somewhere. I am sure I am doing it wrong, but I’ll work on it.

Very impressive all around training in here, to point one thing out would be to ignore a dozen others so I’ll just stick with damn fine work.

Good work here. I like the cleans on f-around day. All in all an inspiring log. It was a strong influence in my deciding to give 5/3/1 a go.

Your uncomfortable rack on front squats and trouble catching the heavier cleans are probably related.

Thanks Joe, I appreciate it. Carl, I suspect you are right on about the catch. Also, its funny, I used to follow your log and your chase for the Snatch record long before I ever posted on here. I really appreciate the compliment.
