Awesome work, Jack! My hips would be crumpled like a piee of paper in the waste basket if I attempted what you are succeeding at!
Thanks OG!
Week 3, day 3, Smolov.
Squats: 45 x 10, 90 x10, 135 x5, 185 x3, 225 x1, 275 x1, 315 x1, 345 x 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5.
Notes: Another tough day in the books. Tomorrow I am scheduled to squat 365 x 10sets x 3reps, which is only 20 lbs. less than my best ever squat. Then I get a week off before testing my new 1rm. It is hard to describe how much I am looking forward to not squating for a few days.

I’m curious as to how set #7 feels. You’re being laconic, but there are dumptrucks worth of strain on those last few sets, I’m sure.
I haven’t the guts for Smolov. Much respect to you.
Thanks LS and DCA for the props, I appreciate it!
DCA, it is difficult to describe how the sets feel, but each one sucks in its own way. The first one today was painful–it felt like the gears were really rusty and its was hard to get going. Even the warm-up sets hurt. But after the first working set, the work under the bar got easier, almost machine like. I have not been in danger of missing a rep yet and I haven’t really even felt winded on any set during the program. But between sets, my lower back, hips, ass, and IT band started to feel more and more in distress and swollen. My body was basically screaming for me to stop and go home after the second set. Also, I felt like I needed to rest more between sets, but the longer I waited the tighter I felt, so I would just get a drink and then go do it again. Mentally, #7 was really the easiest one because I knew it was the last one. But, as soon as it was over, I started thinking, how the fuck am I going to squat tomorrow! Right now, I feel kinda like I have the flu coming on, or like I’m wearing a lead x-ray vest. This is pretty much how each working day has gone since the third day of the first week.
Maybe because I just got done doing my legs tonight, but looking at your squats made my legs feel weak just sitting here!! Nice!
Thanks for stopping in, SteelyD.
Smolov Base Mesocycle, Week 3, Day 4 (Finished!)
Squats: 45 x 10, 90 x10, 135 x5, 185 x1, 225 x1, 275 x1, 315 x1, 365 x 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3
Last set: 385 x 6 (tied weight PR, Rep PR +5)
Notes: The base cycle is now my Bitch! I’m totally pumped. I get to rest for a week, and I will test my new max next Thursday.
Side notes: We are heading up to Fort Warden, Port Townsend, WA, with some of my family to spend New Years Eve and New Years day. Its where they filmed An Officer and A Gentleman, on the NW tip of Washington State. My boy has never been to the ocean, so it should be fun. Happy New Years, everyone!
Awesome cycle Jack! really looking forward to reading the results of your max test next week!
Having been through the torture that Smolov Base is, I have nothing but respect for anyone who completes it.
Not to put you under any pressure, but I think 435(+/- 10) should go up when you test.
Regardless of your new max, great work jjk. Great work!
Jack, that is awesome! Congratulations! I, too, can’t wait to see the results.
Never seen the oceans? Get that young’un to the water!
Happy New Year!
Very impressive squatting. Language is inadequate here to praise this balls-to-the-wall effort.
May 2010 bring you only the best.
Excellent work, Sir; if I wore hats, I would doff mine whilst I read your thread.
That’s some great squatting, Jack. Enjoy your time off!
Rep PR +5 @ 385! After a weeks recovery I’ll be very surprised if your max single isn’t 450 or more.
Great cycle, Jack!
I wouldn’t be able to walk after that.
Thanks everyone, for stopping in. I appreciate all the e-support!
FF, I am glad to see that you are back at it and posting again.
We had a great time in Port Townsend, but I picked up some sort of bug on the trip and I am laying low today. I am also still feeling pretty beat up from the squat cycle. All of my joints are stiff and I picked on a lot of extra fat around my middle. But I still feel like it was worth it. I won’t venture a guess as to my new squat max, but I am cautiously optimistic. I have failed at 405 and 408 in my last two attempts and I am looking forward to breaking through the 4 plate barrier.
I’ll try and get caught up on everyone’s logs today. It looks like the New Year has brought renewed interest to the forum!
I hope everyone has a great New Year,
Jack
Awesome work, bro. 405 will be a small object in your rear-view mirror. Happy New Year.
Jack, great work. Just an idea…you haven’t been posting any skiing activity of late…might be time for a name change
Maybe JJackkrash’s Powerlifting and Masochism Log??
I hope you feel better soon. Bugs are so annoying.
Murl, thanks for stopping in. Now go get your log up and running! :).
LS, I’m thinking about changing the log name to JJackkrash’s Fat with a Mother Fuckin’ F log!
Kimba, thanks, I’m feeling much better! (he says as he gets conched in the head and hauled off in a cart)
No Squating Workout, upper:
Bench: 45 x30, 90 x10, 135 x5, 185 x5, 225 x5, 245 x3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3.
Chins: 5, 5, 5, 5, 4, 4 (these must be a weight PR!)
Superset:
Incline DB Bench: 85 x 10, 10, 10, 9
Krock Rows: 130 x 10, 10, 10, 10
Notes: Well, I went and weighed myself Yesterday and I hit a shocking 238. That is 20 lbs. heavier than I weighed in at on Dec. 5. That’s .75 lbs. a day! I can barely get my belt to close, and I am busting out of my fat pants. Also, my mobility is terrible. Its time to nip this shit in the bud. I guess I went hog-wild during Smolov and now its time to pay the piper. I’m not exactly sure what I am going to do just yet, but I will have a plan in place by Saturday. Fuck.
On the workout-front, I don’t feel like I lost any strength on the bench, but my grip sucks. I figure that will come back quickly. Chins were hard. Duh.
