His mercy extends to giving sinners like me and you a chance to repent and gain His forgiveness for our sins and be saved. However, God is also a God of justice and like any good judge, He must execute the sentence for our wrongdoings.

We have to realize, as Spinoza points out in his first book, that this text was written to appeal to a MASS audience (no pun intended;) The vast majority of people were illiterate and superstitious, more than we can imagine today.

Just like a movie today, you have to have something to get an audience. Its a string of stories designed to bring the Message to peasants and illiterates, who would not see all the errors and contradictions.

Spinoza then wrote ‘The Ethics’ to explain God to the educated populace, the ones who see the errors. (For ex, in Kings I, the Bible tells us that PI = exactly 3. I was shocked to learn this! :wink: He gives a logical analysis of existence, deducing from axioms.

If we look at the Bible in this way, it is much more understandable.

BTW: for those interested, Baruch Spinoza’s work is quite a challenging read. Peruse Will Durant’s ‘The Story of Philosophy’ first. Good stuff!

Then I noticed discussions about God where God was being blasphemed and scoffed at – with nobody including yourself objecting to that. It was at that point that I realized that I can figure out how to grow muscle, but the guys on this forum need to hear about the love of Christ and His way of salvation.

That is the 100% absolute truth whether you or anyone else wishes to believe it.

The Bible is the inspired Word of God and as such it is 100% authoratative. Quote unbelieving atheists all you wish, God is correct, you are wrong, and His Word says that if you persist in your unbelief and don’t bow…you will burn for eternity.
