You’re wrong Steve0. You don’t understand what Jesus says at all.
Matthew 5:7 Blessed [are] the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Show mercy, which is to say, be compassionate and forgiving towards your fellow man and God will be equally merciful, compasionnate and forgiving towards you.
There are no qualifications to that verse, no restrictions or special hoops to jump through.
So that little African kid who has everyone so worried won’t end up burning eternally just because he’s never heard of Jesus. If he’s merciful and compassionate and forgiving, he’ll be quite ok. (Assuming, for the sake of discussion, that there is an afterlife.)
If he’s been merciful, he’ll be shown mercy.
Similarly for all those of other religions and/or no religion. It’s not which book you believe or which way you bend, bow, kneel or cartwheel; nor is it how many times you pray or to how you chose to name your god; it’s all about how you treat your fellow man.
Show mercy, and you’ll be shown mercy.
That so simple and wise a message can be constantly overlooked and ignored is really very sad.
Whether there is an afterlife or not, whether God exists or not; simply be kind and compassionate towards every other human you encounter, everywhere, everyday and your life (this life and the next one, if any) will be better for it.

Oh really? I am wrong? I will give you this…yes Jesus taught mercy and He has mercy. His mercy extends to giving sinners like me and you a chance to repent and gain His forgiveness for our sins and be saved. However, God is also a God of justice and like any good judge, He must execute the sentence for our wrongdoings.
These are the words of Jesus:
Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able. When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not whence ye are: Then shall ye begin to say, We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets. But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out. Luke 13:24-28
There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man?s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham?s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father?s house:
For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead. Luke 16:19-31
Bow or Burn, Pookie – this is exactly what our merciful Lord has taught.
