Every sport has rules to govern the conduct of its participants. Those who break them are generally considered “cheaters”. The whole purpose of “winning” in sports is to achieve this outcome within the confines of a pre-determined system of rules that is made known to all participants prior to the start of competition.[/quote]

…and, de facto, to be successful in circumventing the checks set in place for enforcement. Thus, I think cheating is fine, but don’t get caught and consistently punish people who do. What’s bullshit is letting some people cheat, get caught and not punish them but punish others. If they’re consistent, cheating becomes an occult part of the game and I’m okay with it.

On a deeper level, I don’t believe that “strength” really exists at all, or that it can be quantified in any objective fashion. I have voiced my opinion to the effect that “no one has any idea what this thing called strength is or where it can be found and how it may be accurately measured.”

I would say the same of athletic talent in general. That is the reason why I choose to train for aesthetics over performance and strength.

I hear this all of the time from the 150 lb. dude in the squat rack next to me with 135 on the bar. Meanwhile, I’m on my second set of 2 with 545 in a belt and track shorts @ 230 lbs. Apparently his sets are “tougher” than mine because he moves it slower and he’s doing it with proper form and he’s not really interested in becoming “too big”. Oh, OK, pal…don’t be that guy, dude. You’re smarter than that.

I don’t give a shit how much you’re lifting. I don’t give a shit how much I’m lifting. Therefore, I am not that guy.

But I am interested in getting as big as my genetics (and anabolics) will allow.

That is why I train with light-to-moderate weights for high reps on machines, using mostly isolation exercises.

Or to put it more succinctly

That’s my philosophy, since you wanted to know.

You should probably leave this forum then.

It’s Strength Sports. So most people give a shit about how much they and others bench/squat/deadlift/snatch/cleanandjerk/etc. etc.

I think you would be more suited to beginners, get a life, or bodybuilding.

Strong bencher by the way. I wonder how he would fair if he competed in all three lifts.

It’s interesting that you throw up all that verbage about not being able to truly qualify what strength and athleticism are, yet you choose to train for something even far more subjective. Everyone has different ideas as to what an ideal physique is, but most will agree as to who is strong.

Either way, your doing your own thing and that’s all the matters so best of luck to you. Also, I’m pretty sure the quote goes: “Everybody wanna be a bodybuilder, but nobody wanna lift these heavy ass weights, I do it!” – You know who said it, that strong bodybuilder.

Cheers

You have to be a Phil Hendrie fan…because this stuff is comedy gold!

I laughed my ass off this morning at this. Thanks for that!!

Actually if you read my post a little closer, I didn’t ask you or the 150 pounders of the world for your philosophy. I do enjoy your schtick though. It’s a great source of comedy. Thanks for the laughs! Keep it coming.

That post was intentionally written to provoke a certain reaction, although everything stated above is true. So, I’m glad you enjoyed it.

There’s nothing wrong with subjectivity. That’s the whole reason I’m interested in bodybuilding. I don’t need other people to judge me, I prefer to judge myself.

By the way, strength still doesn’t exist. You may not have liked my metaphysical rant but that doesn’t make it untrue.

That’s cool. Different strokes, different folks. My sarcasm sometimes hides my genuine concern for the well being and success of anyone who ventures into the weight room and challenges gravity on a regular basis. Basically, gravity is my only judge, and she’s a very worthy opponent. Then again, maybe gravity doesn’t exist?

I thought I just felt a rift in the space-time continuum.

How can you say strength doesn’t exist? It certainly does. Or are you saying it’s some kind of relativist free-for-all so it doesn’t really exist?

We have many constructs for strength; the powerlifts, Oly lifting, strongman. Further, we could go into a laboratory and measure muscle forces themselves if we wanted to, but that’s boring so no one does.
