I've Got Mono

I’m hoping to get back in to the gym in a week. From what I read that might not happen, but where there is caffeine and ego there is a way

Don’t do it. Any heavy lifting can rupture your spleen.

hahaha.

Whats the difference between mono and herpes?

You get mono from snatching a kiss.

True story.

how long would you be out of the gym? when i had mono i was in bed for a month. i lost the need to urinate everday and when i recovered i had to be put on ensure shakes to regain normal bodyweight.
i am surprised about the guy that needed to be in the hospital. maybe my parents didnt love me enough to put me in one.
to be helpful i vaugely remember an article about how to retain muscle after surgery. it mentioned bcaa’s

That’s odd, I’ve been out for only a week and a bit now, I feel more than fine to hit up the gym again. I did some cardio today which felt good. I’m going to attempt an arms day tomorrow, see how that goes and if it goes good then heavy lifting on thursday/friday!

go easy for at least a month

when i got mono, was back in the gym within a week, 3 weeks later i was back to lifting my previous maxes and i ended up tearing my abs and my spleen wasnt in the best shape so my advice is take it easy

When I got mono I was in college as well. My fiance gave it to me and she faced more of the burnt of it than I did. I was still lifting fairly heavy and consistantly on a 5-6 day schedule so I would judge it by how you feel. I didn’t go hard every day, but I was at least able to lift and do some light cardio.

I took naps frequently throughout the day. Took some stims if I really wanted to lift hard, and kept the pace moderate. No issues.

My fiance though…she was useless. Always lying around and sleeping. I guess it hits some people harder than others. I think you’re diet and immune systems tolerance to those things is the most important part. I would get on some good immune supplements and ensure you’re getting plenty of nutrients to help facilitate recovery. Then rest when you need to and drive on.

Mono sucks. Really bad. Really, Really bad.

It has set me back about 4-5 months.

I just had it over the summer. I got it around 1st week of June.

Long story short:

I was 168, super lean, when school ended on May 1st. I was definitely under eating, but regardless, 168. My workouts were really coming along. The gym was my life.

2nd week of May, I started a full-time internship, and started eating every 3 hours, on the hour. Only super lean meat and chicken, Metabolic Drive, and dry spinach. I was 180 or so, pretty much gaining all muscle, by June 1st.

In terms of lifting numbers, I was doing squats for 365 x 5, pullups with 100 lbs attached for 3 reps, benching 185 for 10 and 205 for 5’s, and rack pulling 525 for reps, and military pressing 135 for sets of 4-5. Also, the plates at my gym are all heavier (legitimately- they have been weighed on a scale and they all are more than 45 lbs, so chances are all my lifts were probably more than I previously mentioned)

As of June 4th was my last workout, then I started feeling sick (sore throat, nasal drip, etc). By June 10th, it was full out mono. I couldn’t eat anything. I would eat only greek yogurt and toast, and barely could get water down at times. I was taking Vicadin and a steroid to make the mono better. My glands were so swollen that the top of my neck was literally bigger than my head.

July 8th was my first week back to the gym. I weighed 165, losing 15 pounds form mono. I literally saw myself and looked emaciated. I had done 1-2 workouts prior, just BW pushups and pull ups for a few sets, and then some running/jogging. At the end of it, I was dizzy and light headed, and just fell asleep. The weights I was using for the exercises were: Squatting 135 for 10 (and struggling on my 2-3rd set), Pullups with BW for 5x5 were a challenge, I failed on my 5th rep of 135 for Incline Bench, Military pressing went to 85 for 6. Deadlifts were 225 for 10 and hammered after.

As of last week (september 18th), I finally hit 365 again (now with plates that actually weigh 45), for 5 reps, I am doing pullups with 90 for sets of 3-4, dead lifted 455 for 3, military pressed 135 for 2-3, and benched 225 for 2-3. I’, around 176-177 or so again, and about as lean I was when I was 180.

So long story short, from my experience, mono sucks. I was dedicating my life to lifting and all my effort felt wasted.

Also, you may have a not-so-bad case of mono. For example, my sister got mono and went on vacation and was 100% fine.

That’s seriously unfortunate dude, I lost 7 lbs, but that was just from not eating , hopefully my strength and weight will come back in the next week or so, I don’t look like I lost mass so it’s also a lot of water weight as well. But , for level of mono, the week I had the sore throat and stuffy nose was hell, but now I feel a lot better and energized, so lets hope I retained that 365 bench

sucks man i feel ya, i was working full time and studying full time, was hospitalized on Halloween night, the one night of the year where girls are encouraged to dress and act like sluts, lost almost 30lbs in a few days because i was really badly dehydrated, my throat almost swelled shut, could barely eat or drink anything, quit my job a couple months later because they were about to fire me because i was all fucked up (really exhausted and stressed), failed all my classes, my training was put back almost a year because i kept tearing my abs after getting mono and im pretty sure i got mono from a broad that drank from the same glass as me…fml
