Is worth it to start powerlifting or weightlifting as an 18yo?

Try both for a bit and see which one you fall in love with more. That’s the path you should go down.

Obviously a personal decision but if I were in your shoes I’d keep playing handball and maybe try to do a local powerlifting contest in the off season.

Those are very good lifts for your age/height/weight

The only reason I say this is because as you get older it is way harder to participate in teams sports due to work/family responsibilities but you can almost always make time to lift weights however it fits your schedule, even if you need to do it late at night or wake up super early.

Team practices are … whenever your team practices…

61 now…did a little bit of powerlifting in high school

wish i would have pursued it further after graduation…regrets, regrets, regrets

You’re now entering the maximum potential for building muscle in your life, for the next 6 years.

What ever you do, make sure weight training and food is involved.

This goes for online coaches as well I suppose? Since I don’t have any near me or accessible. I checked on reddit for some popular coaches, but since I’m a beginner, any “mid-level” coach can work, right?

For sure, but I’ve taken powerlifting pretty serious in the past before (I added around 55kg to my total in a bit over 5 months) and still loved every part of the process. But, I can say for sure that handball has helped a lot with my mobility in the gym and vice versa.

I agree, but after many years of handball, I’m beginning to love the sport less and less (despite a very positive team).

Sure, but why not get a legit, well informed, reputable coach ?

I cannot imagine the utility of an online coach when it comes to weightlifting. I’d see it the same as an online coach for boxing.

Evan Tanner became a UFC champion after watching BJJ online. I suppose it CAN work but not the best option

Any coaching help you can get is better than none.

This is what’s known in many circles as “the exception that proves the rule”

Definitely. I learn a lot from videos, but in-person is better. Both can’t hurt.

Without catching up to the whole thread, I’ll say (I’m 43):
I always miss playing competitive sports, and I can’t anymore.
I can still lift weights whenever I want, and there’s no shortage of age/ weight groups within which I could compete.
