take em with your meals
Well, if you’re really into it, the best way to do this is to keep a food log, and keep track of the fats you take in during the day. Fish oil is very high in fat, so take them with your protein and fat meals (that is, if you follow Berardi’s program and yo’ure eating either protein and carbs or protein and fat meals), and only as much so that the amount of calories you’re taking in a day is as high as you want.
If you’re already eating like a mammoth, taking 5 capsules a day and adding ~1500 calories to your already high calorie diet won’t be too good of an idea. ESPECIALLY since you’re really young and your body is growing enough naturally. If you’re only getting in around 2000-2500 calories a day, take ~5 at first to up your calorie intake in the 3000s. Imo as a 14 year old, taking 10 fish capsules and upping you calorie intake to 5000+ is overkill…
In the end, it matters on your current nutrition. Supplements are practically useless, no matter what age, unless you’re already eating well.

I’m not entirely clear on what you’re saying in this post, but just to clarify, each fish oil pill only contains 1 gram of fat, or roughly 9 calories. Even taking ten, you’ll only be adding around 90 calories to your daily intake.
I’m going to repeat my usual recommendation of going with Vitamin Shoppe brand fish oil. I’ve never seen a better bargain myself.
You get 300 capsule for $38.51, and each capsule contains 500mg combined EPA/DHA (300mg EPA, 200mg DHA). For some reason, they don’t list that on the site, but I’m staring at a bottle right in front of me.
That way you only have to pop 6 capsules per day, and you get your 3g of combined EPA/DHA. One bottle will therefore last 50 days (at $0.77 per day). Or you could sponsor a starving child, but that won’t help you get hyoooooooge.
You’ll also get free shipping (to the continental U.S.) on orders or $99 or more until September 30, 2005, for those of you who aren’t fortunate enough to have Vitamin Shoppes nearby. Can’t beat it as far as I’m concerned (until Biotest puts out their EFA product, that is).

Maybe I missed something but I didn’t see what his kcal intake was. And he may already know this, but it could be taken wrong… but 5 fish oil caps is 50 cals not 1500. (danmaftei I know that’s not what you meant)
Take them with meals. It would probably be best to space them out throughout the day rather than taking them all at once.
OH GOD sorry, I was thinking of fish oil and flaxseed oil in its natural oily state, not the capsules. Sorry!!!
HAHa now im kinda confused.
The first half of posters said all at once, and the 2nd half said with meals.
How does this sound? ill take 2 with breakfast, 1 when i get home from school, and 2 after dinner. any changes on that? should i take one before bed?
I am semi-concerned about the calories i take in, but 90 a day isnt worrying me. I try to keep a basic count. nothing too intense. i try to eat as healthy as i can. u will never see me with cake, or a twinkie, or fried food in my hands. i lost about 50 pounds 2 yrs ago, so i have a pretty good idea of nutrition. THe worst food i eat is fat free frozen yogurt or ff ice cream at night, and white bread with sandwiches. Otherwise, im usually eating eggs, oatmeal, cereals (not sugar and not huge portions, just to snack), meat, chicken, fruit and vegetables, and Low-Carb Grow! (probably my favorite food, just i try not to eat too much, because i dont wanna spend too much money on protein powder and i know that i shouldnt be getting a majority of my calories from protein powder.)
This post was kinda off topic, but i figured it kinda fit in to what we were talking about.
Thanks alot for all your help
Tom
Hey Tom,
I don’t want you getting confused here, but I think we’re giving you the same advice, but in different words.
Fish oil can cause some issues with people such as fishy burps, upset stomach - fish oil is a food, but highly concentrated, most people would get upset stomachs if they ate protein powders without water/milk too.
These undesired (unless you like freaking people out with fishyness) effects are usually present if taken in large amounts, all at once, by itself.
This isn’t the case for all people though, I’m trying to encourage you to find what works best for yourself - advice is great but you gotta find out what works for you.
If x grams of fat all at once will impact on your meal plan, or you’re experiencing some undesired effects, then spread it out.
I want to emphasise that fish oil isn’t a medicine, it’s a concentrated food, so
it’s something with which you can experiment at extremely low to no risk to your health.

Shouldn’t we be congratulating someone for trying to eat better during their teenage years?
I’ve only had a few months primary school volunteering experience, but I noticed that many of the kids who had educational and behavioural issues did not have good eating habits.
It doesn’t sound like he’s obsessing about it, just taking some time to learn about what he’s putting in his body.
Fish oil at his age might even help prevent the teen skin woes.
Just a few thoughts.

If you’re referring to my previous post, I wrote absolutely nothing negative about Tom’s question. IT’S STILL FUNNY. Most teenagers do not care: that’s what’s funny. Young Tom has posted many times in the past regarding nutrition, and we have given him excellent advice. He has even private messaged me.
Tom, this was already posted above, but it’s probably best to take one or two of your fish oil capsules with each meal.
Split my fish oil supplementation to each meal- roughly. Taking 2-3 Kirkland caps at a time depending on the amount of meals of that day. So anywhere from 9-10 caps a day. Now in comparison to the kinds of meals/food I am eating, I am still consuming less fish oil in grams than possible oils in food. Like the word says- supplementation because I usually eat raw fish, at least a pound a day. Marinated in some korean garlic chili sauce, black bean sauce, limu kohu, and onions. Damn awesome.
Hey bikemike,
I didn’t think your post was constructive, that’s all.
It wasn’t my intention to attack you, your advice, or to make you feel as though you needed to justify yourself.
Now that my lawyers are satisfied, cheers for your input.

I wish I could eat like you that often. Wow. Is that korean garlic chili sauce like the Vietnamese Sriracha brand? (I think I spelled it wrong). Sorry for the hijack…
