Is 5-6 Whole Eggs a Day Dangerous?

I have been eating 5-6 scrambled eggs after every workout 6 times a week for 1 year.(since I started working out). I just turned 16 and I’m wondering will this destroy my heart? Articles online say to eat egg whites or to eat 2 eggs a day. I want the extra calories and I don’t want to waste the yolks.

See you doctor for an annual physical and have them do blood work. Watch your cholesterol.

If it’s normal then you’re fine. If it’s high then you might want to sub egg whites for three of the eggs.

You’re young and probably have nothing about which to worry. I’m 33 and from June '16 to June '17 my cholesterol went from 170 to 220. My only dietary changes were eating 6 eggs each of my three days off from work and doubling my chicken breast consumption from 6-7 lbs per week to 12-14 lbs.

I dropped the chicken and cut down on the eggs for a few months and my cholesterol was back to 170.

Most of your blood serum cholesterol is made by your body. My doctor said your diet can only affect it by 10% or so. My results say differently. One thing I wish I’d done was get my cholesterol checked again right after I got the bad results to make sure it wasn’t a fluke.

Short story long, eggs are fine. If you’re worried then do what I suggested and get regular blood work.

Agree with getting your blood levels checked out. Cholesterol is similar to salt in the sense that people always say salt causes high blood pressure. That’s only true if you’re a hyper responder. Same with dietary cholesterol affecting blood cholesterol.

You won’t know how it affects you until you have tests done.

I should probably get some bloodwork done soon too. Although I wouldn’t be surprised if I was good. I couldn’t imagine how I’d meet macros if it werent for eggs.

I’m 44 and usually eat 6 hardboiled or pickled eggs a day and my bloodwork is always fine.

its an old Myth that egg everyday is not good for us ! You can eat many eggs you want with no fucking problem

Don’t listen to these Egg council guys!!!

Beware that the oil and butter that you use to scramble the eggs may also have an effect on your cholesterol levels and fat intake. Consuming boiled eggs would obviously not pose these risks.

My experience matches @Frank_C’s almost exactly.

Also 33. I was eating 4 whole eggs a day back in 2016 because everything at the time suggested increasing dietary cholesterol didn’t affect blood cholesterol. Blood work showed total cholesterol at 213 mg/dL. I cut back to a single whole egg with some egg whites (from a carton) added in to get to same approximate volume of 4 eggs. Did blood work again this past May. Total cholesterol was 159.

Take from my experience what you will. My family is predisposed to high cholesterol, which may explain why dietary cholesterol had such a huge effect on me.

I think they key is to strive for balance. Maybe sub out some of the eggs for a few cans of tuna each week. You could also sub out some of the meat with vegetarian protein sources (I know…).

I eat 4 whole eggs daily in olive oil spray salt and pepper only. 34 did blood work recently was perfect. Many ppl I see with cholesterol issues blame egg yolks cut them out yet throw down on Chile cheese fried 4x weekly still and see no change. Yolks get all the blame while most likely it’s the case of beer, deep fried foods, butters, and fast station food they eat plus lack of exercise, poor sleeping habits etc that contribute to poor health.

Can’t argue with this, but that wasn’t my situation. Most people who follow this type of eating are overweight or obese. Being larger causes the body to create more cholesterol. It’s not that they’re eating the cholesterol; they’re just eating in excess.

I was actually surprised that eggs and/or chicken seemed to be the culprit for me. As I stated, I wonder if my high reading wasn’t a fluke. It seems crazy to think increasing my egg and chicken breast consumption jacked up my cholesterol by 50 points and removing them fixed the problem. I’m back to eating everything now but in smaller amounts.

@vvfoo, don’t worry about what you eat until you need to worry. Get blood work done at your annual physical just so you’re aware of what’s going on in your body. If you have high cholesterol then worry about the source (eggs, chicken, butter, etc).

Most will tell you that dietary cholesterol doesn’t have much of an effect on your blood cholesterol, even doctors. My experience says differently but I don’t blame any one food. I was eating like 14 lbs of chicken a week and 18 eggs on my three days off from work! That’s not exactly a normal diet for most folks. I cut back on the chicken and eggs and increased my consumption of other meats like pork and everything seems to be fine.

great information and anecdotal evidence so far, but im surprised no one has brought up whether or not the eggs are organic. cholesterol is an immensely importnat building block in the body (contrary to what mainstream agenda would otherwise have us believe), but the real question is are the eggs coming from a quality source?
Eggs from a sick chicken can really cluck you up, pun intended. organic eggs ftw:fried_egg:

I could swear that the normal range of cholesterol used to be 220. I missed the announcement when they lowered it to 200. If they hadn’t changed it then my results would’ve been considered normal and I wouldn’t have had to do anything LOL

If 6 a day is dangerous then I’d be in deep trouble.

At some times I ate around 8 a day for long periods of time.
I am now about 2-4 a day on average but I eat lots of meat instead.

once a week ill eat like a 12 egg omlette as my main meal of the day and have sardines/tuna/yogurt rest of day, maybe a couple more eggs during the week. Never had any problems? there was a time i was eating 4-5 eggs 4 times a week also and was all fine.
Eggs are amazing food

I agree completely man I was just making a point on yolks always take blame. I know from experience that there are alway genetics involved as well. Certain anabolics effect cholesterol too. I’m 100% natty though so never really felt woth that.

Curious why the conversation is about total cholesterol rather than LDL. I eat a fair amount of eggs, and my total cholesterol is 256, but that is with an HDL of 86 and triglycerides of 51 fasted. Total doesn’t really tell the whole story.

My stupid work wellness program doesn’t care. Doc told me she wasn’t worried because my HDL:LDL ratios were good. But I had to jump through hoops at work to get my reward (cash reimbursement).

Man I was on that same crap a few years ago. I’m not a fan of needles so my BP bumps a bit when I go in for blood draws. Well normally it’s 110/70-120/80. It went to 128/78 and because they lowered the base lines I was classified as prehypertensive. Meaning they increased my premiums…I work in the medical field so I check my bp often and it’s perfect but 128/78 is in no way dangerous but by insurance standards you have one foot in the grave.

  1. Total cholesterol is not a good marker of anything. Eggs tend to raise HDL cholesterol so you could easily have just dropped your HDL and worsened your HDL to LDL ratio in the process.

  2. Unless I had already had a heart attack or ischemia, I think I would rather have a 213 cholesterol than a 159 even if the ratios were the same.
