IPhone Users: Jailbreaking

I always thought jailbreaking and unlocking were the same. Guess not.

I’m really interested in jailbreaking mine so I can tether it for internet use.

Anyone done this?

thinking of using this site:
http://www.ismashphone.com/2009/06/how-to-jailbreak-iphone-os-30-on-windows-mac-using-redsn0w.html

but I don’t want to run into problems of messing up and ruining my service.

I have one and have been curious about this as well.

every time I click on a jailbreak thread I read it as “jailbait” and open it expecting to see pictures of high school girls

Me too…

Has anyone else noticed a SEVERE decline in AT&T service? I’m dropping like 10 to 20 calls a day…

Do you think that jail-breaking it would fix any of the service related issues?

JF - Didn’t you get married recently or something? Congrats and best wishes if I remembered correctly! (and sorry for confusing you if I did not)

yeah i had my buddy jail break mine. best thing i ever had done. i downloaded a graphing calculator and a gameboy advanced emulator on it for free then the thing had payed for its self. it gives you a free app store. any app or any of that stuff free i even downloaded a bineural sound wave that was supposed to give me a boner i was not satisfied

Jail Breaking will do nothing for call quality/service. All it does is let you run unauthorized apps on the phone.

In general it is very safe, I know many people who have done it (myself included) and nothing has ever happened to our phones. I havent done it in a while so I forget which one I used, but I think Redsnow is a good one.

If you are still on the 3.0 software you can just youtube “iPhone 3.0 internet tethering” and they will show you a little website to go on the phone to and what to do there. This was one of the “fixes” in the 3.1 update though, killed this modification.

damn, I have the 3.1 version.

I assume, I should just go about jailbreaking it then

would this be worth it?

yup, and thanks. I made a thread yesterday about it if you want to see a few pics

Theres free ones online, i jailbroke mine and my girlfriends but then she updated to 3.1.
So if you find a decent way to do it on 3.1 thats relatively easy please let me know.

As mentioned earlier, Jailbreaking is NOT the same as Unlocking. That former allows you to run programs not sanctioned by apple (Such as sharing the internet like a wireless router via the iphone) and the latter lets you use the phone on a different network other than AT&T.

Repeat - Unlocking does not open your phone to use more programs or customizations, that is what jailbreaking does. It only allows you to use the iPhone on other cell phone networks.

you mean no ones gonna ask about my boner sound?

I had it done before the 3.0 update.

You can undo it too, if you need to - but the effort involved in backing and and then restoring everything was just too much of a headache to do again after the 3.0 update was released.

Also, you need to un-jailbreak everytime a new update comes out from Apple.

You could also just not update

And miss cool features like shaking the phone to undo something?

NO WAY!
