Introducing Sons/Daughters to Lifting

My son continues to talk about weight training. I’m thinking to start with a bench and olympic bar set and perhaps a set of dumbbells. Of course I’d also like a power cage and dip/pullup stand… LOL

I have a simple York gym set in the garage for the kids but they never use it. They want to train like me with barbells. Take the plunge and get the barbell, etc. It will get used.

I have a 16 year old daughter and a 14 year son that I take to the gym once in a while. I have found that I can’t take them at the same time because they get jealous of my attention. I can’t seem to give my daughter the attention she want while giving my son the attention he needs.

I’m gonna get this stuff - it’s just a matter of timing. We’re starting a remodel soon and space will be limited for a few months. Might pick up a DB set sooner rather than later since it can tuck away fairly easily…

WAHOOOOOOOOOOO Screaming from the rooftop

Today was a good workout day. My daughter came into the garage and did a full weight workout routine with me. She is 16 years old '5 4" 115 lbs all of maybe 10/12% body fat. She has never lifted any weights, ever. Her workout was awesome. Goals are to see her abs, for the summer at the beach. And who said we’re not vain creatures!

Front Squats Standard Bar with 30 lbs 3 sets of 5 reps

Back Squats Standard Bar (bar only) 3 sets of 5 reps

Deadlift Olympic Bar 45 lbs (bar only) 3 sets of 5 reps

Bench Press Standard Bar w/35 lbs 3 sets of 5 reps

Sit ups on decline bench 100 at body weight

Tabota bike routine 15 minutes.

Sometimes the simplest things in life are really big deals. I’m a happy camper tonight.

I am now the proud owner of a 300# olympic weight set, ~200# el-cheapo plastic set for $50.

Then from another guy: an incline/decline bench w/leg & preacher curl attachment, butterfly attachments, 2 curl bars, 4 dumbbell bars, bench bar, 300+ lbs of misc. weights that may or may not mix and match between all of the bars. All this for $60…

Gotta clean it all up and figure out where to set it up but my 14 year old and I now have enough to do a pretty complete weight training program together.

Gotta take the deal when it offers itself…

great score!

That’ll be many years of happy lifting…

Soldog, your gonna have a great 'ol time with your boy! I also and buying a 300# Oly bumper set tomorrow. A Brand new Weider bumper set from sears for $209.00 who would have thunk it. Anyway, like you said you take the deals when they present themselves.

This Oly set will give me enough weight to allow my son to workout in the garage while he is home for the summer instead of having to go to a gym. He’s a little burnt out on the gym the football team workouts in at school.

My daughter completed her second workout today. She ran through the same routine as earlier in the week except the back squats. She doesnt like doing the back squats so I cut them from her routine. Hey, who am I to complain, she still wants to do a weight workout. We can always add these back later.

So the boy helped a little bit setting up the system then went off to watch something. Came back about halfway through my training and joined in with me. Says he wants to follow my training program with me. He even said “This is another Father-Son activity now.”

Did my second training session at home with my boy last night. This time he did the whole session with me. Will probably take a couple of more sessions to get his weights at the right levels. Right now I’m just trying to get a reasonable approximation of correct form from him.

Awesome!

Keep it going.

The daughter came into the garage with me on Saturday and made a bit of noise with the weights.

Front Squat bar weight 3 set of 5 reps

Bench Press 35 lbs 2 sets of 5 reps, 55 lbs 2 sets of 5 reps

Tabata bike routine for a total of 12 minutes

She doesnt like back squats so she said she doesnt want to do those lifts anymore.

Sunday took the new 310 lbs of coated bumper weights out of the box and put it on bar(s). These should save the garage floor from cracking on deadlift drops (not that its started). Had a great workout with five new PR’s, but I’m really excited to get my boy home for the summer, he’s got some great lifting goals lined up (and some speed goals; he’s a running back) and I get to lift with him all summer long. We have a total of about 600 lbs of weights now so we should be able to have two bars going at the same time. Gonna add a smith machine or regular squat rack to the garage sometime this week.

I’ll travel to pick him up this weekend. We’re stopping on the way home at Zion to climb Angel’s Landing. May also get some fishing in while we’re there.

You guys are gonna rock this summer!

Three workouts with my son this week. He’s putting up some serious weights and teaching me cleans and power cleans. He’s putting up 235 cleans like they are nothing. I’m still working on form.

sure is nice to have someone who knows how to lift working out with me. With a couple of adjustments to grip and some spotting and my bench is getting heavier and i’m getting in more reps in each set. I can feel the increase in strength. This summer should be productive for both of us.

Saturdays a big family day because my daughter is going to workout with us. This should be interesting. We’ll need to move his 315 lbs on the bench off to make room for her bar with 65 lbs on it. It should make for a good contrast and I anticipate the comments from both of them. My family is a twist between Archie Bunker (me) and kelly and bud from married with children. Add in the estrogen depleated wife going through the change, and, well, you get the picture. This should be an interesting morning.

My 5 year old son wants to start working out with me. I did some research, and found that 8 is a perfectly good age for a kid to start lifting, so I told him that I’d buy him his first weight set then.

Thing is, I want to start laying a foundation with him, and I’m not sure where to begin. Should I have him start doing bodyweight stuff now (including BW squats)? I definitely want to encourage this, and hopefully have a lifting buddy in a couple years.

Yeah, Bodyweight stuff and maybe even a couple of light dumbbells for him in mess around with.

I have 2 sons, 6 and 8. They do some body weight stuff, small dbs, punching bag and we do sprints outside. They both have said they want their own tires to workout with. I want to set up some kind of obsticle course in the yard.
great to hear about all these attentive dads

With a 5 year old…just have fun…pushups where you have a contest to see who can do more (let him win every now and then)…kangaroo hops…throw a soccer ball like a medicine ball…don’t worry at all about the fact that his form for pushups looks nothing at all like a pushup is supposed to…just make it fun and keep him coming back…

It ain’t lifting, but check out the Presidential Fitness web site stuff…they have times for shuttle runs, pullups, situps, etc…and the kids usually do these tests in school…so…you can help him win an award.
