Where do you live? I’ve never seen any of it. Ever.

Have to agree here.

But I am old and the “kids” who work for me in their 20’s do not act this way. Neither do my children who are in their 20’s.

Is this more prevalent up north?

Nothing like this happens in MD that I’m aware of.

It was bad in college. It was exclusively an engineering college, and a magnet for all of the smart social outcasts from a bunch of small towns in Missouri. When I started there, the male female ratio was 10:1 (and I’m not skewing the numbers) by the time I left, their apparently really good recruitment efforts got that down to 4 or 5:1.

On top of it, the college was socially isolated; it was 100 miles to any town with a population greater than 20 thousand.

So, social awkwardness combined with artificially high competition led to a whole bunch of crazy shit. Everything from super creepy to super desperate. And many of the girls thought they were princesses. There was one girl who complained aloud in a psych class about how the guys in St Louis were such assholes, because they wouldn’t refill her drink for her. I think I was the only person who laughed.

So there was that.

And then several other guys I’ve worked with in the software industry at a few different companies have been like that to varying degrees. In terms of dress, in terms of online dating profiles, stuff like that. I’ve just learned to distance myself over time.

But even on the other end of the spectrum, I’ve had girl friends relay some of the ridiculous stuff other guys have said and done… and there seems to be a correlation between how hot a girl is, and how crazy the guys behave around her.

EDIT: Missouri, Ohio, Indiana. The guys I worked with in the southeast were pretty normal though.

^Weird.

Super creepy = guys who would just sit in the hallway of the girls floor in the dorms, just to watch the girls go to/from the showers.

Oh… one of the guys I worked with several years back, his dating profile is still up on okcupid. I’m really tempted to send a link as an example, but I’m not that much of an ass.

Some excerpts:
My self-summary
So I’m a programmer. In “the industry”, I’d be called a software developer, a software engineer, a systems engineer, a systems architect, and/or a solutions engineer. Do you do it too? Probably not. Points if you do, though.

[…]

Aside from programming, I really like animals. I have a dog, a cat, and a gerbil, and if my lease would allow more, I’d have more. Any place else I am, the animals just COME to me. I think that animals are much smarter and more attentive than we pretentiously-evolved humans give them credit for. They’re excellent judges of character, too.

I also hugely like videogames. It’s my other passion. Sort-of a narrow scope, though: I lean primarily towards all things Nintendo, but I wouldn’t call myself a fanboy; I don’t hate non-Nintendo stuff… much  I have every Nintendo system made, and I have… well, tons of games. Give me a Mario, Metroid, or Zelda, and I’m happy

[…]

I think I frustrate people with my hermitude. Literally, 90% of my reason for leaving my place is going to work. (The other 10% is because I need food.) I’m not UNWILLING to go out and do things, it just so happens that everything I like to do can only occur at home. Thus, I don’t go to bars or clubs or any of that. I never have, actually. But I like my life the way I’m living it, and I figure that true friends will accept (or even like) me for it.

I’ve never drank, smoked, or done any kind of drug. (Well, except prescription drugs, but only at prescribed dosages.)

I’m not a manly man. I’m not macho, I don’t have a motorcycle, I don’t have a girl on each arm, and I don’t have massive biceps. I’m also not a douchebag, I don’t play games, I won’t talk down to you, and I won’t treat you like shit. I’m real. I’m a nice guy. If you want a nice guy, look no further. If you’re still in the phase where you SAY you want a nice guy, but you REALLY want a jerk, then go through a few jerks, figure out that you really DO want a nice guy, and then give me a call.

The first things people usually notice about me
Hair, probably. It’s really quite long, because I haven’t worked at a job with a silly hair-length-related rule in over five years… so I just kinda don’t cut it. But it’s how I get in touch with my feminine side. Logically, the next step is lingerie. Any takers?

I’m told I have nice hands. I’m flattered by this, but I don’t understand it, because I’m unfamiliar with the criteria.
Long surprisingly well-kempt hair down to his waist. Goatee. Trench coat.

Worked with many many people like him.

You know, there IS a difference between software engineering and IT.

But yeah, the industry for sure.

Yeah, I’m nearing that point where everything begins to taper off from a salary standpoint. I’ve got a couple years before I’m truly spinning my wheels, but it’s coming soon.

It is to get you in the door, lol.

Then most people get too lazy to leave.

Accounting Information Systems, I hear they make good money. I have no idea how it compares to various positions in either profession though.

Your post reminded me of when I was in college and in the computer lab, basically a glass room full of almost all male nerds, one of the guys put a sign on the window next to the door “Come on in girls we’re nice and don’t bite! <3!!” So as a joke one of the few other females and her boyfriend put up a sign beneath it saying “LIES! RUN FOR YOUR LIFE WOMEN AHHH!!” or something stupid like that and a couple of the guys immediately saw the sign and ALMOST CRIED. They were so upset. It was bizarre. One guy angrily grabbed it ripped it threw it down and reminiscent of Napoleon Dynamite pouted grumbling about jerks.

Before this I worked in a manufacturing plant with a lot of men in Mack jackets and coveralls that was a steady flow of insults and attempts at emasculation that this lab scene was a shock.

My wife worked in “the industry” and had to deal with some pretty weird shit on a daily basis. There were a couple of real nerds who were a bit awkward, but generally very smart and likable, and awesome at their jobs. The rest thought they were nerds, but in reality they were one dimensional social retards who were completely convinced of their own genius, to the point of being extremely obnoxious. The sad truth is they weren’t even good at what they did and were only drawn to “the industry” because their entire lives were played out on a computer; it was something familiar. The strangest part was, even though they were so similar, they hated each other with a passion. Many of the posts on betapedia look and sound exactly like these people.

My wife used to get marriage proposals from people she didn’t even know, all because she used to make small talk around the office. She tried to let them down gently by explaining that she wasn’t single, yet she always got these weird responses like suicide threats and (pretend) cutting. These guys watched too many high school movies were the loser got the girl despite his lack of personal hygiene conversational skills.

My kids are only allowed one hour a day on the computer, unless it’s homework or something.
