Intermittent Fasting

If you’ve done it share your knowledge and thoughts.

I’m in my second week of Leangains style IF’ing and I love it. No more obsessing over perfect meal macros and timing, my life doesn’t revolve around food anymore.
Surprisingly, my strength during fasted training never dropped, and I have more energy than ever. I don’t see myself stopping…ever.

My thoughts exactly. I have been doing it for months and it is great. I’ve actually increased my fasting time from 16 hours to 20 hours, but I will never increase it more than that (on purpose, sometimes I do end up fasting 24 hours). But when I eat, I eat like a king! My weight has stayed the same for quite some time, but my strength has gone up and Im satisfied when I eat. I supplement with creatine during the day to help preserve muscle.

I can go freaking on and on about all the benefits I have experienced. Im actually doing an experiment on myself. I’m keeping my body weight the same while trying to double my lifts. Im hoping that improves body composition. The way I see it, if you’re using your muscles, and stressing them, then your body won’t get rid of them. To double your lifts would actually require you to build your muscles more.

So if my body is running low on nutrients through the day and it needs to actually build the muscles, then it will get the nutrients from stored fat and glycogen. Im not saying for sure things will work out the way I want it to, but based on anecdotal evidence and sound scientific theory, it SHOULD work.

Sounds like a great experiment, keep us updated.

Also, I want to facefuck your avatar.

Any of you care to post some progress pics?

I would but my initial intentions for starting IF is for digestive purposes. Since now I am trying to improve body composition (by doubling my lifts while keeping my weight the same) it will be quite some time before I can comment about its efficacy or post any pics.

My digestion is horrible, but i’ve only been IF’ing for a week and a half so far and haven’t noticed much of a difference.

You didn’t mention anything about fat loss. Care to share?

Thus far I have lost 10 pounds and 1 inch off my waist without trying. No Im not trying to sound arrogant, but that was accomplished without it being my intention. When I ate (and currently eat) I eat as much as I want until Im full, of course with high quality food most of the time. I’ve increased my fast time mainly because it fits my schedule better, and also its a bit bigger of a challenge.

I started doing IF about 4 weeks ago. My eating window is from 12pm - 8pm. I start my workouts at exactly noon (4 days a week) and break the fast with a protein shake about 15 minutes pre-workout. As soon as I get home, I usually have a whole food meal, obviously high carb and high protein, but anything goes. I buy a new junk food every week. Sometimes it’s Pop Tarts, sometimes cookies, donuts, whatever. I pretty much eat until I’m almost sick and don’t keep track of calories or carbs, I just try to make sure to get plenty of protein. I usually eat around 100 grams of protein and around 300 carbs in the first meal. I’m 248 lbs and 11% body fat, BTW. My next meal is a normal dinner, whatever I want. Then a smaller meal right around 8pm. Less carbs, but high protein. Some days it’s actually hard to eat enough calories in the 8 hour window. Nonworkout days are very low carb. It can be tough, but it makes it easier knowing that if I make it through the day, I can have anything I want the next day.

I’m very pleased with the results. My weight has not changed at all, but my muscles are much fuller and I definitely feel leaner. I’m trying to bulk up while keeping bodyfat in check but as I mentioned, it’s hard to get enough calories some days, even eating all the junk food I want. It’s hard to go by scale weight on this diet. My diet will fluctuate as much as 8 lbs a day depending on what I pigged out on the day before. I do like not having to worry about what I’m going to eat for breakfast. I never realized how much I used to stress out about food. At first, I had no energy for my workouts, but that’s gotten better. On leg day, I still run out of energy toward the end and sometimes will get shaky. But overall, this is a diet I could live with for the long term. Curious to hear about other experiences.

How long for that ten pound loss? Have your lifts increased, decreased, stayed the same?

248lbs at ~11bf is real good bro. Just so I have an idea, care to share what you ate today, or on any average day?

I’m 6’5" so 248 isn’t as good as it might sound, that’s why I’m trying to bulk up some.

Today was a low carb/non-workout day so I ate the following, which is pretty typical:

Noon - 1/2 pound lean hamburger with some shredded cheese, low carb yogurt
3pm - 1/4 pound turkey, low carb yogurt, 5 strips of bacon
6pm- 2 chicken breasts, brocolli
8pm - two scoops of sunbutter, protein shake

Yesterday I had the following:

1pm - 2 cans of spaghettios, protein shake, 4 donuts, milk, handful of candy corn, 4 Chips Ahoy
4pm - Bagel with cream cheese, chocolate milk
6pm - Big portion of lasagna
8pm - Cheetos, Doritos, 1/4 lb of deli turkey, 2 yogurts

I probably get away with more junk than some people because of my height. I used to also have a huge movie theatre box of skittles on the way home from the gym (which was like 160 grams of pure sugar) and still didn’t see any adverse effects. I had to cut it out because it got expensive and made my teeth feel horrible. I haven’t had my BF% checked since I started this diet. I’ll try to get it checked this week.
