Intelligence Gap?
conner wrote:

This just illustrates that you “don’t get it.” You’ve likely never been able to easily comprehend things that others find challenging. You’ve never been the only person in the class who gets something easily and has the rest of the class staring at you bug-eyed. Because of that, you’ll never understand what it’s like.

The difference is that your critics are mostly jealous and insecure. It’s good to make such mistakes online - where it doesn’t matter.

You have now been exposed to the anti-intellectual bigotry that pervades society. This thread should remind you how much being intelligent can make you a “target.”

Sad, but true.

You pretty much open yourself to judgement once you start communicating with other humans. We are Not a different species from you, really.

So--

what a wierdo. I cant believe you said any of that.

“tell me ‘you are too smart for you’re own good’, etc. on an almost daily basis.” ???

Why would you even tell anybody that? Thats totally conceited. Im not even going to go over the rest.
You have an inflated view of yourself.

Just because your good in academics doesnt make you smarter than everyone else, you are as ignorant as the “high school dumbasses” you talk about. Did you ever even think that maybe those “dumbasses” were smarter than they let on to other people? If you saw me in high school, I was high from overdosing on Welbutrin EveryDay. And Im intelligent, or so I think I am, at least to a level thats good by my own standards.
Either you have poor reading comprehension abilities or I write with an utter lack of clarity.

see…there is “knowing stuff” and “getting it”

If you get it, you can learn anything.
If you just know stuff, meh. Good for you.

OP has typical syndrome of person who thinks he gets it, but doesn’t really.

I’m afraid I may have created a new picture of a teenager holding a shoe.

If you were getting high every day, then I can confidently conclude that you were (are?) an idiot.

Well, I would say “Good for you.”.

As far as cartoons go though, Nothing beats The Animaniacs. You can’t get any funnier than Slappy the Squirrel.

Nothing!

If you believe that you are much more intelligent then everyone then you are just not that bright.

EVERYONE says this. It’s the same thing as saying, “I have great relative strength.”

Some people are biger and stronger than others; some are smarter. I’m not sure why people have such a hard time accepting this.
because its stupid to accept that.
yuk yuk

Everyone has different perceptions on what makes a person smart, strength and speed, physcial-anything is going to be much more concrete than the measure of someone brain power by only 5 conversations youve had with that person. Or even 3 years of being with that person.

Honestly, who Can measure someone elses brainpower?
So how Can you know what is smart anyways? Its all a guessing game, and I dont think people talk about IQ because they are insecure, I think they do it because how else are you going to measure the unmeasurable?

Well duh. It’s not accepting the fact that some people are smarter than others that’s giving us problems. It’s the fact that all the self-described “highly intelligent” persons can seemingly only use that high intelligence to tell others about how smart they are.

Instead of telling us, why don’t you show us? There are plenty of other threads around where it would be interesting to get the insights that can only be had by someone of high intelligence. Being highly intelligent does enable one to relate facts in ways others miss, doesn’t it? We should have various threads where your posts - or those of KombatAthlete - would spark new ideas, new avenues of discussion.

Oddly, I don’t recall ever reading you or KA anywhere and saying “Hmmm. I hadn’t thought of that; interesting…”

So, instead of whining about how hard it is to have an 180 IQ and how lonely you feel, why don’t you demonstrate your massive intellect in more pragmatic ways?

The proof, as they say, is in the pudding.

I am a critic, and I am neither jealous nor insecure.

That said, having read your posts, if you have ever had trouble finding your comfort spot in groups of people as you said earlier, rest assured there may be a more satisfying explanation than your intellectual superiority. After reading your posts, I am sure it is something else.

Oh ok. No matter trying to to get to know me and see my opinions and views about anything.
You know the type of people I hate the most? The ones in high school (junior high) running around judging everyone by face value.

Also the ones who think they know if a person is an idiot by one post in an internet forum.
Also the ones that so confident about themselves that they never really get to thinking about what they are saying and are extremely impulsive

You know maybe, just maybe, someone died while I was in high school and I was a tad depressed about it. Maybe I was getting raped constantly. But, oh, dont consider that now! You would be an idiot to think that! Last time I checked when people just wanted to get a high for no reason they went for crack and mary jane–not antidepressants.

Right on the money, Pookie.

If these self-appointed geniuses are as sharp as they claim to be, they wouldn’t have to tell us they are, right? It would be obvious from their posts?

I, too, await the pudding. Haven’t seen it here.

I hate to potentially sound like the cockiest person alive, but this is an Internet forum after-all.

Does anyone else feel like their unusually high intelligence makes them removed from society, in the sense that you feel separated from just about everyone else you know?

I have noticed this more and more about myself the older I grow (I’m in high school), and although it’s not a bad problem to have, it is a little troubling emotionally. It’s like I’m just not on the same playing field as everyone else. Keep in mind that I have a normal social life and am atheltic so I don’t feel removed simply due to being wierd.

Can anybody else share any insight they might have about this, either from their own experience or someone you knew?
It’s certainly true that more intelligent people will feel more isolated. It all comes down to that old saying “happiness is not having what you want, but wanting what you have”. If you have only a few good friends, cherish them and find contentment in that. Don’t try too hard to fit in because nothing good comes from it.

Also, even if it is true that you’re substantially more intelligent than others, it’s best not to bring up this fact in conversation. For some reason it is generally met with rather abbrasive responses. Ironically, if you tell someone how fast/strong you are (and you’re telling the truth), then such comments are not met with near the same abbrasiveness. Apparently mental ability reaches deeper in a person’s core of self-worth than physical ability. I speak that as a generalization and of course there are counterexamples so there’s no need to provide them.

On a slight tangent, don’t believe the results of most IQ tests. The majority of them have strong cultural bias. If you want a more accurate idea of your IQ, try a culture-free IQ test.

Keep digging.

I don’t think a persons IQ effects that persons social life or communication abilities. A friend of mine has an IQ of 186 but I am still able to hold my own in an argument with him. In fact he can make some rather obvious mistakes. And I have seen no withdrawal from society on his part.

The way I see it, the discussion should be about intro- and extroversion. For example I don’t consider myself especially intelligent, but I am very introverted. I am quite happy to spend time in my own head and I avoid social situations because they drain me after awhile.

The thing is that an extreme introvert and an extreme extrovert will see the world in completely different terms. So social interaction between them can be complicated. And an introvert can appear more intelligent only because he is more aware of his own self, where as an extrovert might be more superficial.

And a feeling of intellectual superiority can be a massive handicap. You won’t find answers if you close your mind to the ideas of the ‘lesser’.

I have to disagree with you on that. Bring up how strong or muscular you are the same way this topic was started, and you may get even worse responses. Did you miss the “I’m so HUGE and GIGANTIC at 190lbs that I can’t find clothes that fit me” threads and skip right over the “I can’t find jeans that fit my massive…24" thighs so I have to wear pants 1 size too large…what do I do???” threads?

This topic falls into the same category based almost completely on presentation. You would think geniuses would know how to guide a thread better.

Can I? You bet I can. What you’ve described is basically my life. I’ve often come to the conclusion that communication is impossible.

One thing, though: I don’t really believe in the concept of human intelligence. I think it’s something else.

Human language is really not a method of communication. It is just a species ritual. The way I like to approach the world is to evaluate everyone and everything according to it’s percieved utility; in other words, treat everyone as a tool.

And it’s true that nature creates stupid people for a reason. When you understand “natural economics” also known as Darwinism you can really apply yourself properly and stop trying to fight against nature, instead work with it.
You guys are pathetic.
