His work with Tim Burton is always amazing. Sweeny Todd was a fantastic movie, one of my all-time favorites simply because of how artfully it was done. It does fall slightly short of the play, but only because in the play, you couldn’t see the plot twist coming, whereas the movie’s flashbacks made it rather obvious.

ehh, sorry…SLJ has done many roles that don’t require tough, jive talkin’ – for lack of a better description.

See the Red Violin and The Caveman’s Valentine for examples of such work.

The difference I find between SLJ being typecasted as a round-the-way hood and HF being typcasted as your everyday hero is that SLJ can pull it off humorously while being believable; HF’s rolse are too fantastical. That is just my opinion, obviously.

Johnny Depp and Philip Seymour Hoffman are two of the best character actors currently working in mainstream Hollywood.

Just my opinion.

Okay fine, maybe there’s a LITTLE typecasting going on here:

Harrison Ford is the white Denzel Washington. They both play the same character in all their films, and people enjoy watching them. I know I wouldn’t mind earning a few million for playing the same character over and over.

Agreed. It also doesn’t make them bad actors.

That doesn’t mean I won’t pay to see Russell Crowe or Denzel play the same tortured character in a different setting. No one could pull it off quite like them.

There is a reason we go and see movies with Christopher Walken in them. That reason is because we like who they are and want to see them act out whatever part they were given.

The same goes for Samuel L. That isn’t bad acting. You may call it a lack of significant range, but who the hell else could fit the parts they are known best for?[/quote]

Keep in mind that Harrison Ford DOES have range. You just rarely see it because he is LITERALLY playing the same character over and over.

4 Indiana Jones movies.
3 Star Wars movies
I don’t know how many “Jack Ryan” movies.

Regarding Henry, however, proves he can certainly expand beyond the tough hero role. And in What Lies Beneath he actually played a villian. Then there’s K-19 where he played a character which featured none of his usual charisma.
