I’m sure there’s some good discussion going on in this thread but I can’t get past your hilariously mesmerizing avatar of that cat slip-jumping off that windowsill.
and whats unvoyeuristic about watching 100m women’s sprinters for example?
Cos their athleticism is impressive/ inspiring whatever you choose to call it. They are pushing the limits of human ability. You are not gawping at them for their ability to run in a straight line, rather for their speed.
Someone with one leg hopping along and doing a somersault over a super low barrier is not a “high jump.” It is just gawping at a cripple like they would do in medieval or ancient times.
Wow. Some of these posts are just revolting. Let them compete and push their abilities. With all the help they can use. Do you think the guys in that race wouldn’t trade their prostheses for calves if they could? They don’t run faster than healthy people at the same level, regardless of how little oxygen their prostheses use. It’s a crutch but they’re making the best of it.
And that high jump was fucking high. How many people on this site can jump higher?

By the same logic, women don’t push the limits of human ability. The best guys are faster and stronger than the best girls. Doesn’t make their accomplishments any less impressive. And it doesn’t make the event a freak show.

I posted in regards to how amazingly fast this guy was running at the end. His time of 24 odd seconds is crap and he would struggle to compete in a race with 13 yr old boys but that’s not the point.
The paralympics is more about competing and achieving something. Want to watch something inspiring try watching the swimmers with no arms and one leg.
Whats more they can probably swim faster than most here. Would they ever be competitive in the real world? No of course not. It’s just a chance for them to compete and do as well as they can. It’s probably not easy for them to race other athletes with similar disabilities. So when they get the chance even though the odds might be hopelessly against them (one might have half an arm and two legs) they still have a go.
Of course if the runners with prosthetic legs were to start winning medals and breaking regular world records I’m sure they would be banned from competing in regular events.
Good post.

No, that is not by the same logic at all. Women compete against other women to find out who the best woman is. Women break WR to become the fastest woman ever. Obviously, women against women is not a freakshow as a result of men being faster, WTF are you talking about, you make no sense with your terrible comparison.
Too many people want to say oh look have a cookie you can swim with no legs and no arms. Where do you draw the line with this stuff? Should they allow wheelchair boxing with both “boxers” having only one arm each? Or mentally disabled judo where everyone has an IQ of 35? Where do you stop with all this BS? Volleyball with no legs? WTF.
No sane person can watch most of this and not see a very patronising, voyeuristic and arbitrary element to it all. OMG I am so inspired by no legs volleyball with the net 12 inches off the ground. It is a freakshow, alot of this would have been in a typical travelling circus in the 18th Century.

People with no legs compete against people with no legs to see who’s fastest with no legs. The only thing that makes that a freakshow is you seem to think it’s ok to call them freaks. Problem?
As you say, let them have their cookie. They made the most of the situation.
Of course I’m not too impressed with the medalists in a race with three contestants, but I respect them for competing.
Now go out there and jump higher than the guy with one leg.

Yes, let them have their cookie.
They, unlike so many others who want one, actually worked for it.
