What is your favorite part or one-liner in “Pumping Iron”? (I just watched it for the first time yesterday.)[/quote]

Who could forget Arnold to Lou, “You are the son and I am the father”.

Scott L,

I don’t have any meniscal cartilage remaining in my left knee.

I can lift weights–squats, lunges, and all the leg variations with the exception of hacks–without any problem. However, I have trouble doing high impact stuff and if I have to move laterally, I have to hail a cab.

By building up the quadriceps and hamstrings, I’ve more or less made my knee bullet proof, at least as far as lifting weights goes. I also found the Endo board to be a big help.

And you’re right, we should do some articles about training around–or in spite of–physical limitations.

And thanks very much for the compliment!

Stevemax,

Writers that I admire? The usual culprits: Nabokov, Updike, Fitzgerald, Kerouac, and Faulkner.

More recent ones I admire are Jerzy Kosinski, Tom Wolfe, and David Halberstam (non-fiction).

Slimjim,

I liked and still like Charles Poliquin. However, he got mad at me for some reason I don’t fully understand and he left…abruptly.

Charles, however, has a history of this kind of thing. I think he takes offense rather easily. That’s too bad because he’s a great coach.

Granted, he wanted to branch out on his own, but still, he ended all contact.

And thanks very much for the kind words about my writing!

Kilgor,

It’s strictly a matter of economics. While it’s no big deal to ship small items to Canada, we’re eventually going to T-Jack some things that are heavy muthas; stuff like weights, stationary bikes, treadmills, and Army surplus tanks (maybe not the last item).

The cost of shipping to Canada would be painful, to say the least.

Can I talk you into moving? I know of a nice duplex you can rent.

Irishrock,

I appreciate the comment more than you know, but please give a tip of the hat to Tim Patterson.

As I often say, Tim is the brains of Biotest while I’m the gall bladder, or maybe one of the testicles.

vroom,

Why are your pets shedding so much?

You know, you guys got me in a question answering mode and I almost started to answer this.

You’re just funnin’ ol’ TC, aren’t you?

Chad,

Who’d win the chess match?

I honestly don’t think I could come up with a better answer than Mike the Bear:

“A lot depends on whether or not Paris will be wearing panties during the game. You need to factor these things into account, Chad. Otherwise, your question is ridiculous.”

mmcgowan,

Yep, tore my pec while bench pressing. It’s all Dave Tate’s fault.

Son of a gun’s talk about 1RM’s romanced me into trying to see what I could do in a bench press. At the time, I probably hadn’t ever gone below 4 reps or so, and then out of the blue I started piling on weight to see what I could do.

The weight was going up easy enough but the sucker just tore-sounded like a wet rag tearing.

I now have a divot and I rarely perform bench presses. I do dumbbell presses, but I don’t use any weights heavier that 75-pound dumbbells, just to play it safe.

I do a hell of a lot of flyes, though, and that movement hasn’t suffered at all.

Other than that, it hasn’t changed my life at all.

Tell us about your dog, he/she looks awesome. I have a statfordshire terrier bitch, 65lbs. She makes that same “I am the happiest motherfucker on the planet” grin that your dog makes. Shis may be sad to say, but with all the people in my life that have dumped on me, my pitbull is my best friend and one of the few living creatures I can trust.

Atomic Dog -

I may be late, but I had a couple of questions that are relatively unrelated to weightlifting/training/nutrition.

  1. Where are your musical interests? a) What’s in your CD/mp3/casette/8 Track/Phonograph player right now?, b) do you play any musical instruments? (if yes, which ones, how long?), c) what musical genre do you identify with?

  2. Give up some detail on a more memorable moment in your life that contributed to who you are today?

  3. If you could do it all over again and could make one SINGLE change, what would it be?

  4. Have you ever had a sexual encounter with multiple females? If so, please the most memorable in technicolor!

Thanks, you rock man!

-Brent

I think you’re mistaken about ART. I’m pretty sure it was developed by Dr Mark Lindsay in 1993 as he was working with Donovan Bailey on creating a recovery program to assist in his drug free sprinting career.

Mike Shank,

Yep, that’s Toney the English Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

Weighs 55 pounds and eats five meals a day, each pretty much based on T-Nation principles!

I also have a bitch named Riley who’s pied (black and white).

Ken Rose,

No Ken, it was Leahy’s baby. I’m not sure, but I THINK Lindsay used to work for Leahy way-back-when.

From what I understand, Tim P. and Leahy are the only ones who hold the trademarks and patents and all that.

Furthermore, the first guy Donovan Bailey hugged after he won his million-dollar match race was Leahy. You can, as they say, check the videotape.

Brent M,

You really want to know that stuff? Man, I’m afraid of putting everyone to sleep!

Okay, music interests. I recently discovered this rad band name ABBA. Maybe you’ve heard of them?

Nahh. Just kidding.

These are some of the singers/bands whose stuff I’ve recently bought from I-Tunes:

The Postal Service
Sum 41
Bob Marley
Peaches
Elvis Costello
Barry White
James Brown
Sublime

Genre I most identify with? Rock, I guess, mostly alternative, but I like lots of stuff ranging from Baroque classical to rhythm and blues.

I don’t play an instrument but there’s not a week that goes by that I don’t threaten to buy a piano.

Most life-changing moment? I was telling Shugs about this last week. When I was four or five, my brother taught me how to read using little playing cards with letters on them. It literally “clicked” and I began reading immediately. The next day, I read “Tarzan and the Ant Men” by Edgar Rice Burroughs. After that the world just peeled open.

Single change I’d make? Nothing profound as I don’t have many regrets. As mundane as it sounds, I think I would have been more direct with women when I was a teenager and in my early twenties. In other words, I wouldn’t have been so chicken about approaching them.

Ever had multiple females? Just once, but it’s near the top of my list of things to do again. Hell, you’d think that being an editor-in-chief would nab you at least a little action!

Possibly, I’ll check with him (he’s one of my best friends). I was at that race too, and I’m obviously very proud of what he achieved drug free. When you look at what those other guys are taking, it makes his 9.84 accomplishment even more amazing

Any advice for a 5’6, 105lb female that wants to add lots of muscle.
Oh…yeah and I like this site b/c nobody seems to censor and it is GREAT!
