Disagree, a judge has studied law a good deal more than a sheriff has… When it comes to prosecuting crimes/handing down sentences, a judge should probably have more power
Agreed… It should also however be taken into account just how long people stay sick for… how long it takes on average to die from covid-19
You’re correct, perhaps we already have millions and millions of cases (I wouldn’t be surprised if we did given it can take 14 days just to become symptomatic, and the margin of error within the testing process also supposedly induces false negatives)… Or perhaps the number of undiagnosed cases (seems unlikely, but possible) aren’t very high. Only time will tell, I believe it’s critical that we are as cautious as humanely possible in effort to contain the spread.
How long are you willing to live in this state? How many lives are going to be irrevocably ruined if this continues? The financial toll will be felt for decades.
I’ll bow out as this portion of the conversation is out entirely of my grasp. I don’t know what LEO is, I do believe however in relation to criminal prosecution, a judge should have more say than a sheriff.
Economic recession vs worst case scenario potentially 2-4% of the world dying … I’ll take my chances
We are better equipped to recover following a recession than we were during the 30s. It’ll take a few years to come back to normal (notwithstanding long term rammifications to certain industries… tourism for one) but the argument of the economy being more important than losing a large portion of the populace is in my opinion heavily flawed. This assumes that economic recession will kill perhaps a few hundred million people within a very short time frame.
I’m willing to live in isolation for a few months, then again I live on a farm, so I can go outside regardless (it’s easier for me). I’ve also always got work to do on the farm to keep me occupied.
After a few MONTHS (3-4) yes, different measures would probably need to be taken… It’s not practical to keep everyone locked up for years (unless we had say, an extremely infective bioweapon spreading around taking out a good 90% of those infected)
I’m extremely tired, we can continue this conversation tommorow… Anxiety stemming from this whole situation as a generalisation has made me severely, severely sleep deprived over the past week or two
The herd immunity approach, and advocates acknowledge this, would mean more people hospitalized and more people dying. Herd immunity could work provided you have the resources to deal with it, which we don’t. We essentially have a herd immunity approach, anyway, given that these lockdowns are pretty nonrestrictive.
It’s deadlier for older people, but last I heard nobody under 15 has died and the overall death rate is estimated to be 1.4%. Not trying to minimize this, just putt it into perspective and cut through the hysteria.
“If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.”
~ Samuel Adams
Not to turn this into a historical quote thread. But a reminder that freedom is not easy or safe seems applicable.
Don’t want to get too heavy into the erosion of rights thing, I will say that I think the majority of restrictions are being done in good faith and not with nefarious intent - also with that in mind we should be patient with the temporary measures, if after the virus has subsided the restrictions don’t revert then I’d be concerned, I would hope given good intent behind the actions they wouldn’t stay in place longer than needed.
The point I really want to emphasise though is the seriousness of this virus. Italy went into lockdown 9th March, they had 9172 recorded cases on that date and a death total of 463 death’s. The had as of yesterday 92,472 recorded case and 10,023 death’s, that’s with lockdown in place (presumably most of those cases and deaths were as a result of those already infected at the point of lockdown). Imagine if there were no control measures and just 50% of the USA caught it and it only killed 1% that’s still approximately 1.6 mil people just in 1 county. The Flu kills as maximum of 650k people globally annually. That’s using low estimate for both transmission rates and death rates based on current data. It simply isn’t comparable.
The cost of leaving this disease unchecked in both human terms and economic terms is too vast to ignore.
Ya know when there is an emergency and you bark orders at people b/c time is of the essence, but then that one person has to question everything, or takes issue with your tone of voice?
To me, That Guy, is representative of the people actively resisting govt policy in this time of emergency. Don’t be that guy. The strategy to contain this epidemic works, and works exponentially better when everybody does their part. We need to give this strategy a chance to work.
It’s good to reevaluate decision making as we move down the timeline. And we should absolutely be worried about our long-term erosion of rights… But we need to put that aside right now so we can quickly control the spread of this virus (I.e. don’t take issue with the tone of voice, just suck it up for now). That only happens when everyone does their part and gives it a fair shot. Every month, we reevaluate, with a priority on easing restrictions while maintaining an acceptable rate of infection. It’s only been a week since some states started taking this thing seriously.
Remember, we are not trying to prevent the spread of the virus, we are simply trying to slow it down so our healthcare system isn’t overwhelmed.
People are looking at those numbers and measuring them against the total population of the country and thinking that it isn’t that many people relatively speaking. They ask how many people die on average in one day in Italy, around 1,500, and compare that to how many die in one day from corona. The thing is, most of those deaths are occurring in one region with a population of 10 million.
