Let’s be honest, it’s pretty easy to hit your macronutrient goals by almost solely eating junk. It would perhaps be a bit harder to hit your protein requirements, but it’s easy to just eat a bit of meat or consume a brotein shake.
Shouldn’t If It Fits Your Macros really stand for If It Fits Your Micros? As mentioned, it’s easy to fill your macronutrient needs, but shouldn’t someone only consume junk if they’ve consumed adequate and sufficient micros through vegetables, for example?
I propose changing If It Fits Your Macros to If It Fits Your Micros.

Calm down… I just don’t understand why it’s called IIFYMacros, and I wanted to see if my logic is completely fallacious lol.

This is an untenable concept simply for the fact that none can know an exact measurement for what they should eat on a daily basis.
Nutrient needs change constantly.
That’s true, although IIFYMacros implies that you can just eat whatever if you fit it into your macros, which I don’t believe is true. I do endorse IIFYM, but it’s a good idea to consume fish oil, cruciferous vegetables, etc.

peanut greens FTW
I like my m&ms how I like my women: without nuts.
On topic: to play some devils advocate, what if you hit your core macros using mostly junk food, and then supplements with protein/EFAs/vitamins/minerals to make up for the loss of micros? I’m not saying I endorse this approach, but can anyone shed some light on what that might do?
My gut is telling me is only that it will keep you from better gains than if you hit the same macros with clean food choices. My gut is also very hungry…

I’m not sure how much of the minerals would be absorbed…

Yep, its been demonstrated already that grain proteins and anti-nutrients cause certain micro-nutrient deficiencies.
Also, here is a pubmed link that KINDA makes this not a bad thread afterall
But I don’t think any study will show (or want to show) a direct correlation between grains and mineral deficiencies, but we are talking about some hypothetical diet to begin with…one with almost 100% processed wheat (junk foods).
Also lectins (another anti-nutrient) are technically not neutralized in commercial breads and extruded cereals. But fair enough this would not take beans, peanuts and some other types of unsoaked grains off the hook either.
Lastly, if you believe a shred of what “Paleo” is about, you’ll believe that at least half the population are to some degree gluten sensitive… gluten of course leading to all sorts of malabsorption gut issues. But that is rooted in dogma I suppose.
