Ideas for Adding Flavor to Food

There are several salts that don’t contain sodium but still taste “salty.” Potassium chloride is commonly available, but there are others.

Low salt? psh, just drink more water.

But seriously. If you absolutely need super low cal stuff, the spices mentioned are good. Unfortunately I’ve never seen a good website that explains spice combos for ANYTHING, why hasn’t it been created yet???

The condiments are cool. Butter is great, but butter buds will help (not 0 cal, but very little), it has the “savory” flavor of butter though, not sweet, so it doesn’t work for shit in desserts.

I hear great things of PB2

Frozen super dark chocolate blended in a spice grinder, add black pepper, cayenne, garlic, cumin and coriander, rub on steaks for awesomeness.

Learn to brine. You have to use a ton of salt and sugar, I know the salt goes to work, but not sure the sugar does anything at all to the meat (the skin for sure though, yum). You can brine any meat, it will help. Brine a whole turkey with 2-3T of liquid smoke, (it’s too cold to grill, plus im in college so I don’t have a good grill, anyway) broth, sugar, 2-3T cinnamon, bay leaves, tons of garlic powder and onion powder, brine with a ton of ice (this is my variation of Alton Browns brine turkey, prob the most searched recipe ever haha. Note* half the amount salt if the meat is already infused with brine)

use tomatoe paste or sun dried tomatoes instead of regular tomato products to drop the cals and add more flavor.

All vinegars are good, except balsalmic. That’s fine unless you buy a reduced version, it’s the only vinegar with sugar in it.

Do some research, it take some creativity but it pays off. Want something italian without a plate of pasta? look up a recipe and youll see that they almost always add: basil, marjoram, parsley, etc. Cook up some chicken in a pan, wait until it’s almost done (temp on thermometer at 150 degrees F), add a few T of tomato paste, those spices some regular or low fat mozzarella, water, cover and be amazed.

Don’t know how to flavor other meat? if you have pork, look at homemade sausage recipes, or how the Hawaiians season a full pig, just season the meat that way and it’s bound to be good. Do a quick search on what countries use a lot of lamb and how they season it, etc.

or just get on youtube, haha. Some of my favorites are Alton brown, gordon ramsey (ton’s of youtube videos, like Brown), jamie oliver, bobby flay sometimes.

good luck

Thanks for all the responses!
