I just have a problem with guys leaving their kids to fight in some war. don’t they realize years from now, the kids are going to say “yes, my daddy the war here” the dad i never saw or did anything with" great soldier, terrible father. if they can live with that, so be it, I couldn’t. My devotion lies with my daughter, not this country. I owe this country nothing.
I get what you’re saying to a certain point. My father served in Korea and Vietnam, was active duty for 20 years then joined the government in a different capacity. He was never home and he does regret it some now that he’s older. He definitely thinks that his actions were somewhat selfish. But on the other hand what he did and the service he partook in made this country better for me. It solidified my resolve to want to make this a better place to live, it gave me a sense of commitment, and it put food on our table.

But to your point, I never saw my dad. That’s one reason that I served for 8 years then got out when it was time for me to raise a family. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t think guys who are married with kids in the military are terrible fathers. It’s typically quite the contrary in fact. But serving definitely takes it’s toll on the family and it strains it in a number of ways. But to say that they are all selfish and terrible parents is way too broad of a brush to paint with.

You are correct in that your devotion should be to your family first and foremost. But, to say that you owe this country nothing is to ignore your obligation as a citizen. Maybe it’s not to go to war but we all have an obligation to this country or at least our local area to help make it a better place. That means voting, paying taxes, etc. For many of us that also means serving in our military. You most certainly have a certain amount of debt and you’re foolish to think otherwise. I’m not sure what other countries you’ve been to but I’ve been to places where people all think they owe their country nothing and typically they are in pretty bad shape.

Damnit Edgy.

You’re talking about an extended military career with lots of overseas postings.

WestboroRogue did not make that distinction. He said, “guys leaving their kids to fight in some war.”
True. Perhaps I was giving him too much of a benefit there.

Equinology aside do you understand the basic concept that “guys that leave their kids behind to fight in a war are selfish assholes. Your kid should be the most important thing, not this asshole country that lets tons of people go homeless and die”?

So if you’re in a foxhole, the bowels of a troop carrier ship, a submarine, a naval destroyer, a galley, a chopper, a C-130, an Asian swamp or desert, a hospital unit, rushing out of a landing craft at Tarawa, fighting frostbite in the Battle of the Bulge, watching your buddies die on Hamburger Hill, losing your gangrenous limbs in the retreat from the Chosin Reservoir, liberating a Nazi concentration camp, lacerated by barbed wire at the Somme, trying to avoid IED’s in 'Stan…you are a “selfish asshole”?
My point is, now this is just my personal opinion. If you have kids, you shouldn’t be in the military going off to war. I think being a parent and being there for your kid is more important. Do you want your kid to grow up without a dad. Im saying that in general. Sure, they will think your brave and fought for your country, but that child won’t even know you. You weren’t there for them. they will have no memories of you. They will just no, while daddy is away in the war, I have no dad here.

I think that’s what he’s trying to say, but I’m sure he will come back with a very contradicting explanation to save face.

Don’t get me wrong I think a person’s child is top priority in life, but I’ve also seen a lot of great men with children serve their country. They seem to make it work, perhaps they’re more bad ass than the great RV.

RV are you a socialist? Honest question, just curious.

This past war was was what 15 years. Im sure these guys that had kids saw them very infrequently.

9 years and it depends what your deployment schedule was.
