I Quit Smoking

Congratulations , it took me 3 times to quit, The first time I quit I got sent home from work for insubordination, the second time I quit I got a divorce , the third time was a charm. The patch worked wonders. Funny I have not smoked for 11 years but on occasion I reach for a cigarette.
I’m coming up on my 2 year anniversary of quitting. I still get those “I still smoke” brain dead moments: checking my pockets to make sure I have my smokes, strange urges to reach for one … etc. I guess it never goes away. I figure I’m forever addicted.

God I hated smoking. Keep it up dirtbag! Smoking sucks. The only reason anyone smokes is because they’re addicted; I don’t care if any smoker disagrees, they’re wrong. It’s the addiction causing them to think otherwise.

Being addicted to something sucks.

I quit 6 years ago…but I chewed the gum (nicotine gum) to help. I say if you start to go really really nuts and are about to go back…get some of the gum.
Otherwise…good luck and keep at it!

Fuck the gum, that creates a new bad habit… Go patches as you forget they are there. I quit in Dec last year to get my fat arse to the gym to lose weight (couldn’t do cardio whilst smoking) now I’m living a BB lifestyle and feel and look like I’m 15 years younger … Beats the shit out of drugs, smokes and alcohol.

Report,

Its been a month. I in the last week I went out to the patio/bar to see how I would hold up. Dangerous yes but I can’t hide from the world.

climbs to the hight point he can see and screams with fists raised

I AM STILL SMOKE FREE!!!

I picked up a girl for fun and giggles. And she happen to smoke. I seriously didn’t like the taste of ashtray in her mouth. It was a turn off. And the smell of smoke all the time from her clothes. As pretty as she was it was a total turn off. Lets just say I won’t be rushing to call her anytime soon.

First of all Congats.
Keep it up! You’d be starting to breath easier by now.
Funny u should say that about the girl u picked up. I had a good looking girl keen on me but she smokes and it was a real turn-off! Plus she had a kid too and that didn’t help. But seriously I felt like a hypocryte for avoiding her just coz she smokes. Girls that respect their body is much more of a turn-on!

EDIT- Although if she looked like the chick in ur avatar I would’t care if she was the Malboro Woman!

Seriously, congratulations. I know first hand just how difficult a task that is. It took me several attempts and one major lesson before I was able to stay smoke free. That lesson is “One smoke and you’re back at it” Don’t get fooled like I was in the past. Stay strong, aside from working out it’s the greatest thing you can do for yourself. Life is going to be so much better, again congrats!

Actually she was pretty good looking and young and willing to go! But I was not into the fact she smoked. I could smell the ash tray on her breath

I quit about ten years ago and still get dreams where I smoke…In the dream I’m always just finishing it and look down at my hand and go wtf?.. Get pissed off at myself for giving in and then wake up.Weird.

Keep on keepin’ on DB. I’ve been smoke free for a little over 4 years now. And since that time I’ve lost 65 pounds and gotten stronger. to boot. In those first several weeks upon quitting, I replaced my Camels with an assload of water.

I smoked for 9 years, and was up to 60 a day at the end there. I picked up a book called “The Only Way to Stop Smoking Permanently”, by Allen Carr, and I have never craved a cigarette since.

I recommend it to anyone wanting to rid themselves of nicotine addiction.

I read that too! It is so simple but manages to make you see smoking for what it is… Great book that definately helped me. I quit about 6 months after reading it and although i did “my way” most of the methods I used happended to be stated in that book.
I don’t get those “wtf” dream that James Bond gets though but I do get weird ass dreams like I’m eating tubs of cottage cheese and everyone’s looking at me as if I’m a freak !

Good job, dirtbag!

LOL…great name. Everything sounds like an insult.

This August will be the one year mark of sobriety for me: no smoking or drinking since August 2008.

Feels awesome. What it’s really amazing is how much people care that you don’t smoke/drink, in a judgmental way: “Wow. Why did you quit again? What do you mean you don’t drink? Can I get you a beer?”

It’s really fascinating. They almost take it as a judgment against their own behavior when it is anything but.

You’ll get there, man. After 8 weeks it gets real easy.

That is SO true!

I did those things only to better MY life and the last thing that I expected was people to take offense as if I’m trying to make them look bad or something.
And yes it only gets easier over time… It’s the subconcious that takes time to adjust.

I get weed, i get booze, i get most of the other drugs, but i never understood cigerettes. What does it “give” you? Weed makes u high, booze makes u drunk and calms ur nerves, and the other drugs all do something, but what does cigerettes specifically do? Does it make u happy? Calm?

i quit smoking after ten years ( i am 27 now )for muay thai. stopped it for 11 months … my anerobic conditioning got better faster, but there was no faster muscle gains. just eat an apple evertime you normaly do something where you smoke. just stay away from alcohol for some weeks. partying and going to clubs is not a real problem in us, cause you arent allowed to smoke in clubs. am i right ?

Now i have a slap lesion type II and i need surgery in september. no fights, no hard training for 4 months after surgery. to be honest that was a real set back. i started smoking again 3 weeks ago…

now i really feel like shit. smoking is awful. hope i can stop again soon.
You’ve only been smoking 3 weeks. STOP NOW ! What are you thinking man ??

Another way to get a buzz. It’s a buzz. If you can’t get one when smoking it’s because you don’t smoke right and aren’t taking it to your lungs.

This is where I disagree. Smoking cigarettes is more about mimicking what you’ve been seeing for so long. It’s copy-cat / observed behavior, and I think the physical addiction of nicotine is a copout for the more serious psychological addiction. You have to look at smoking from cognitive behavioral standpoint.

Any time an action is very simple, very easily reproducible, it has a high potential for psychological addiction.

Look how easily you can take a pack of cigarettes, open it up and light one and keep smoking it. You can do it ANYWHERE. So many people do it. There are what, 20 cigs in a pack? Every time you redo the action (lighting up, smoking it, packing a pack, putting out the cig) you are reinforcing a behavior to the point of it being second nature. THAT is the problem, not just that there’s nicotine and other chemicals.

Look at text messaging. You can do it anywhere, you mash the same damn buttons, it is CONVENIENT…hence, it is addictive behavior.

Do you know how I quit smoking? I made it INCONVENIENT for myself to smoke. I stuck to cigars (because cigar tobacco just tastes way better than cigarette tobacco) and hooka. You can’t simply step outside the office for a 10 minute cigar/hooka break, can you?

It’s a pain in the ass to find a spot where you can light a cigar, enjoy it for close to an hour and not have people look at you funny because you’re puffing on one. Same with a hooka.

I made it so inconvenient to smoke that there was NO regular frequency with which I would smoke. Sometimes I’d do it twice a week, other times every 3 weeks. That was another key quitting.

I think the psychological addiction of cigarettes is way underplayed. Also, all this shit about “gateway drugs” is garbage. If you have one addiction, it is easier to become addicted - especially by the same mechanism for addiction, e.g. psychological - to something else. Look at people that are OCD.

You just gotta find the right beer. But yeah still, weed > beer
