Not good (I know it’s the Daily Rag but it has some graphs inside)
Not to nit pick, but I don’t believe Sweden is in the western hemisphere.
LOL. You’re right of course. I meant western world as opposed to the high rates of atheism in a few Asian countries (China, Japan).
Yes, but despite atheism Swedish culture is shaped by their Lutheran tradition, namely pressure via social control and is surprisingly conservative in many areas (weed for example)
Would you expect more secular countries to have better outcomes, or more religious ones?
I wouldn’t expect that variable to have any effect on the outcome. I’m more interested in the thought process, culture, and the form of government that leads to the decisions on what steps to take.
Many of us served during the two longest wars in US history, entered the work force right before, during, or right after the worst recession in US history, and many have taken on crippling debt because we (proverbial we) were told a college education is an end all be all of the American dream after older generations shipped a significant portion of labor-intensive jobs to cheaper countries all so that they could buy more shit (materialism). Most millennial’s and younger are behind in their careers after older generations held on to their jobs after the recession tanked their retirement and many are underemployed even still. Not to mention the hilariously pathetic fiscal situation the country is in ie the debt and unfunded liabilities old generations left for us. Not to mention whatever the situation is with the global warming or whatever the fuck we’re calling it now.
I’m so tired of being told young people need to sack up like we’ve all just sat around eating Chetoos watching Netflix for the past decade.
Which is weirdly what we need them to do right now. I’m in the middle of this. I think the young people suck isn’t what Aragorn was trying to say. And I hate the amount our society says young people suck and I’ve pointed that out on here numerous times. I think his point was more along we can’t stop partying on the beach for a few weeks?
I actually view it right now as less about age sacrificing as all sacrificing. We’re no longer at a point where our health system is potentially overwhelmed. It is overwhelmed. And I think anyone right now regardless of age that doesn’t do everything they can to minimize the spread of this (I’m not saying never go outside) is selfish. It’s drunk driving to me right now. You’re doing something that might not kill anyone, but you’re putting everyone at risk.
It’s actually probably much worse than drunk driving as drunk driving is typically only putting a handful of lives at risk should a fatal accident occur. Being an asshole now has the potential to kill a crap ton more people.
Aragorn is pretty level headed and one of my favorite posters. That was more a general rant than aimed at this comment.
Agree for the most part. Imo, a significant portion of the overwhelming of our healthcare system is that people are scared to death, which is a major part of the problem. Something like 80% of those tested for COVID19 test negative. I can only imagine how many people go to the hospital that really don’t need to be there, but that’s the way a lot of American’s are.
Well, we punish drunk driving regardless of harm caused or the offender’s knowledge that he is drunk. Should we do the same with this? Maybe arrest people that cough in public and take them to be tested?
No. Many people have no idea they have it. It’s not hard to drive sober. It is hard to know that you shouldn’t get groceries when you feel fine.
Have you been drunk? Did you know you were drunk? Did you know you were getting drunk? Did you know you were going to drink to the point you would get drunk before taking your first drink?
It’s pretty hard for a lot of people. Check out the number of wrecks involving sober people.
A lot of people get DUIs when they feel perfectly fine(and many are driving that way). DUI is about your BAC.
Yes
I know when I feel drunk, but I don’t usually know my BAC.
Sometimes.
Ok. It’s not hard to make sure you are sober before driving.
Again not hard to be sober before getting behind the wheel. Avoiding a DUI is hilariously easy compared to not infecting someone with this.
Okay. So, we should punish drunk driving more severely than something you referred to as:
Copy.
So you were aware.
Agree lots.
I’m not making the argument you’re wanting to discuss. You’re making the argument. The only person talking about punishing people with corona in here is you.
There’s a difference between the consequences of an action and the consequences of a crime.
