Husband and Wife on V-Diet

I don’t see what the big deal is. We’re talking about 28 days out of a life time. It’s not like he’s experimenting with unprotected sex with crack whores. He’s gonna do a diet where he drinks protein shakes…

I’ve done it a couple times and had great results. Yeah it’s tough. After a couple weeks though, the idea of eating seemed kind of gross. Weird what happens in your head when you do extreme things.

Glad to hear you had great results, bino – thanks for the encouragement.

(Agreed that protein shakes DO NOT = Crack whores) LOL

As someone who has had posts not allowed because they were too “mean” to “certain people,” I disagree. For the right person, it’s absolutely the best diet out there.

If, like me, you can eat the same foods every day and not get bored, and if you like having arbitrary but inflexible goals to meet, it works great.

I don’t think I’d ever do it again. But I’m absolutely glad that I did it once.

I am on day 6 and loving it. It takes all thought out of my day as far as whats going into my stomach. I love simplicity, and I don’t think it gets more simple than this. Making food for my son is a nice little mental exercise of restraint as well haha.

Pay no attention to those that try to bring you down, just do it right without cheating, and be done with it. Only as hard as you make it, Good luck to you two.

Good deal bro knock this shit dead.

Hi all,
I just wanted to introduce myself as the (until now silent!) wife in question doing the v-diet along with koots. I have been encouraged by all your feedback and support!

today is the end of day 3 and things are going fairly well…I ran 6 miles this morning and afterwards had a banana, and 1 cup of milk in my PW shake, and a piece of ezekial bread for my “good” carbs to recover.

I feel fine tonight. This diet is giving me good modivation to run and lift…because PW is the only time I get carbs:)

Good for you, glad to hear its going well. Keep us updated on how you are doing!

Start of Day 3 for me, and I’m feeling pretty good. Yesterday I was very surprised, I did not feel hungry all day! In fact, work was very busy and I had to remind myself it was time to eat! I checked the scale yesterday afternoon, apparently I have lost 2.5lbs in less than 2 days (I know, mostly water weight). I’m feeling a bit thinner, too, and looking forward to what’s in store these next few weeks.

By the way, I would recommend chewing gum or using a breath mint while on this diet – all the protein shakes are apparently not good for your breath.

Work-outs the last couple days have been tough. I just feel lethargic and have trouble recovering after a set. I’m going to add some gatorade in my pre-workout shake to give myself a little more energy.

Has anyone tried using creatine while on the V-diet? I don’t see where it would hurt anything. I’ll give it a few more days and add it in if workouts are still tough.

My girlfriend and I did the V-Diet together. We also workout together. We also live together. Two people on the same plan and doing the same workouts made it easier for me. If she was eating salad and meats and I was drinking only shakes, I would have gotten mighty envious. I kept a blog with my/our progress.

What’s your BF%?

As for the supplements, I think creatine is a good idea.

I think that gatorade is a bad idea. It’s got high fructose corn syrup in it, besides the fact that it gives me heartburn I don’t think it’s very good for you. Gatorade isn’t what it used to be.

Would you mind posting a link to your v-diet blog?
Thanks!
Erika

Erika, if you click on my name above my avatar it will bring you to my profile (old T-Nation site). The blog is there. On the new T-Nation site, clicking on my name pops up a menu with options, including “Blog”.

The blog is from the most recent backwards. Scroll down to get to the beginning.

BF% = ?? I don’t have calipers, nor do I really care. The mirror tells all. What would you say, looking at the pictures I posted?

As for Gatorade, I use the powder and just throw it in to my PW shake. It is quick carbs to spike insulin, has a good supply of electrolytes, and tastes great (orange gatorade + vanilla protein + ice = orange dreamsickle)

It doesn’t look like you have too much fat to lose. I hope you don’t feel like you wasted a month cutting down when you should be building up. At least thats how I felt when I got off of it. At any rate I hope you meet your goal. Keep posting pics.

      Hi Koots, how's it bro?

I’d say your in the neighborhood of 11-13% as a guestimate. Anyway, glad to hear you’re both on your way and doing well.

Ya know as far as macro's go, it's somewhat similar to the AD insofar as it's really low carb...the difference is that on the AD you get to carb up nicely on the weekends at one or two days depending on if you're cutting or bulking etc.

I think your wife will do fine too, like you said, she is taking in some extra carbs besides what the diet calls for, and that should help her with the running.

I think you guys should kick ass and both of you are pretty intelligent and have a good idea of what you're doing, so keep it up!

Check on ya later bro, and I'll be in touch.

Sorry but I haven’t had time to read the whole thread but what I have read from the OP warrants this comment (sorry if it’s already been made).

You do realize that you’re not doing the V-diet right? None of these alterations that you’re making are in the V-diet that Chris Shugart laid out.

Wishing you continued progress however and thanks for sharing.

It doesn’t work great. You lose LBM. You lose strength, and you are run down the entire time.

It is nothing more than the slim-fast diet without the soy, and without the meals.

If people are so desperate and impatient for results - then this is the diet for them. I think it is a cop-out, and should be ranked right up there with the graprefruit, Scarsdale, and cabbage diets.

As for what I meant when I said “certain people”- you have no fucking clue - and that is a gross understatement.

Thanks for the well wishes. Here are the few changes from Shugart’s plan.

First, we are using some non-Biotest products (sorry T-Nation). Strictly a price issue, we got the EAS protein (whey, caesin, and soy) 6 pounds for $27 at Costco. Can’t beat that. Same idea to get a protein with a short and long digesting protein blend.

Second, our plan cut out the handfuls of fish oil caps, which is to provide a source of Omega-3’s and increase calories without having to take so many shakes. We have plenty of Omega-3’s from the flaxseed, and have enough calories from the protein and flax. If we were much bigger and required more calories, the fish oil is an easy way to up the daily calories, but we didn’t need this.

Third, Erika is adding some extra clean carbs on days she has longer runs. She is lifting 3 days a week and running 4-5 days a week (beginning to train up for a marathon). Her total calories will still be in line with the calorie goals when you consider her increased calorie expenditure with the runs.

So, you are right we are deviating a bit from the original v-diet, but I think it is clear we should have essentially the same results.

The beauty of the v-diet is the simplicity. Counting calories is EASY. Even with some small modifications, a calorie is still a calorie, and the outcome should be the same.

Good enough for Dan John, Good enough for me.

Thanks, bro. I’ll post pics at halfway and when completed. Hopefully we’ll see a big difference!

Have you read anything on soy protein? I think it would be a good idea if you haven’t.

No doubt some of the Biotest stuff is more spendy, but the price is related to the quality.
