Hurricane Irene

The press loves body counts. Last I heard on the news was that 46 deaths were attributed to Irene over 4 days in the 13 affected states. To put this in perspective, which the media never does, 26561 deaths are expected in the US over a 4 day period. The 13 states account for approx 24.5% of the US population which would put the expected deaths at 6501 for the same 4 days. This puts Irene’s “death count” at just .7% of what would normally be expected. Statistically insignificant.

glad to hear everyones ok. just glad you only had to experience a cat 1. I know SOME people were not impressed. just come down south when a cat 3 or 4 comes in. we’ll put your ass in a house on the beach and see what you think.
I was just south of Miami when hurricane Andrew hit in 1992. No need to tell me what 165 mph winds can destroy. Let’s not turn this into a pissing contest. I lived through that devastation, too, and it’s all bad. And that’s what I think.
no pissin’ contest. it’s just that I don’t want people to take these storms litely. Irene showed even a cat 1 can be hell. the rain it carried was worse than the wind.
we try to stay ready all season because it’s easier than the alternatives. hope they never see one again. we know we will eventually, as that’s the price of living on the coast in the south.

although sometimes you kinda hope for a storm to clear the beach.
