Hurricane Helene Aftermath

I applaud you both.

I’m selfish so it’s a no on my end, but I hope things work out for those harmed in NC.

I beg to differ. You’re just getting your footing and have student loans to pay off. You’re good!

Canned goods, a couple dollars or time at a shelter or food bank going to the disaster area all helps

if not, don’t worry about it

and please, don’t applaud me…i am doing nothing compared to what the real heroes are doing

$750 immediately, up to $42.5k total assistance. FEMA has spent billions on Maui relief/recovery efforts, and will spend many billions on Helene recovery. Gaetz voted against funding FEMA, with Helene in the forecast, because he was willing to sacrifice Americans to make a point about non Americans.

Who do you think should be in charge of distributing federal disaster relief?

I don’t know, but I also don’t think it should be siphoned off to people who don’t pay taxes here. It’s strange how Mayorkas said the country was prepared for hurricane season this year. But now we’re not. What happened?

I’m very glad to hear that on both fronts, but saw a lot of videos stating otherwise (regarding Maui).

Again, not surprised if he’s corrupt. However, the skepticism of whether or not the government could distribute it fairly would not be surprising either.

The govt, including FEMA, is being funded on a stopgap short term bill, because a full budget hasn’t been agreed to. FEMA needs full funding available to be sure they can cover another disaster of this scale, this year.

FEMA does fund illegal immigrant housing, and I agree that we should lower that funding.hpwever, It is a separate budget from disaster relief, and the disaster relief budget was not lowered to pay for the housing. Ironically, the last time a president directly took money out of the disaster relief budget to pay for housing illegal immigrants was 2019…

And fwiw, Maui residents received $700 instead of $750… blame inflation.

Good info. Thanks for the details!

That should only happen when the government declares that illegal immigration is a national emergency. What do they think the “E” stands for in FEMA?

No declared national emergency means no FEMA funds. But that would make too much sense.

I think they changed it to “Equity” a few years ago.

Guess who declared that emergency back in 2019.

As it surely is an emergency.

But don’t say the border is secure and then fund the problem with “emergency” intended funds.

I just don’t get what point you are trying to make. Sounds like you agree with me.

The first-hand accounts from NC residents are the most telling.

And this is just cool. Go goats!

Was she asking for people to send her money? I would also need to see proof she applied for and was denied assistance. I am automatically skeptical of anything on social media.

It’s funny how people are against big and/or the federal government until they need something. I remember how Katrina victims were ridiculed for not leaving New Orleans and not having the means to take care of themselves. Remember Kanye saying Bush didn’t like black people? Ask people in Puerto Rico, which is part of the US, how they felt about Trump bringing them paper towels. You can’t want big government only when it’s in your best interests.

But politicians bank on voters having short memories.

I’ll link you my Venmo

She did mention Samaritan’s Purse. But yeah, I’d avoid sending money directly to individuals you don’t personally know. Her video is one of many I’ve seen with people saying they were denied assistance.

I’m more skeptical of reports coming from the news media than from people’s real life experiences. Could they be lying? Sure. But when everyone is saying that they’re experiencing the same or similar things, you have to start wondering if there’s something to it.

I read this article yesterday and I think it offers some plausible explanations for the lack of response. It was written by a military logistics officer involved with the Hurricane Kitrina response 20 years ago.
