Hurricane Helene Aftermath

Anyone else horrified/shocked about the news coming out of NC?

My understanding is that there isn’t enough in relief funds, the measly $750 is just per household (not individual), and FEMA is actually blocking aid to the victims. All of this seems like insane news.

If you see anything worth mentioning, drop it here. Also, memes criticizing the government are encouraged.

I’ve been paying attention to Elon Musk since he’s trying to help.

The Maine Wire just released a video today showing the migrant apartments that FEMA funds are paying for in my area.

That’s insane. I saw something about FEMA funds going to illegal immigrants but wasn’t sure if it was just a rumor.

I love it when the government fact-checks rumors about itself and says that everything is just fine. :+1:

They use budget lingo to hide the fact that there is money to pay for new voters to raise enormous families, but not to respond to the emergency.

This is similar to how my local political leadership cannot explain why there is funding available for a low-barrier homeless shelter (i.e. paying people to get high and trash the town), but not the county prosecutor’s office with a multi-year case backlog.

Ah, that absolutely makes sense.

Do you know why they don’t want citizens helping other citizens? Sounds too evil to comprehend.

I could only guess at the reasons for that. Generally-speaking, a government bureaucracy’s first priority is the wellbeing of the bureaucracy.

If you read the website, it was mostly geared towards ensuring that folks knew how to apply for aid, and dispell rumors that would make them hesitant to apply for aid. It wasn’t saying everything is fine.

For a disaster of this scale, there has to be an expectation of some suffering. There is no way to immediately address everyone’s needs all at once, it logistically is not possible.

Additionally, if you allow a freeforall with aid distribution, you will get inefficient distribution and chaos with too much aid going some places, too little going elsewhere, and no accounting of how much is left or how much more is needed. Too many cooks in the kitchen.

I am unaware of FEMA saying they are out of funds, or won’t have enough funding to help victims. I am aware of Matt gaetz and other republicans voting against emergency funding for FEMA just days before Helene hit (it still passed).

Nothing surprises me anymore. But should FEMA even be trusted to appropriate funds correctly?

It’ll be interesting to see who votes for the bill Mace proposed.

This was from Gaetz:

I was unaware of how he voted but is it possible he voted against funding because he knew victims in NC would still only receive $750 per household, and the rest would just go toward illegal immigrants?

From what I’ve seen, Maui victims received a similar treatment.
