I saw that in Cooks Illustrated a few years ago. I thought it was that nerdy guy who is in charge of all those America’s Test Kitchen hoes.
My uncle emailed it to me, thought it was appropriate for a hunting for Beginners

My first year of deer camp I was eight years old.
My dad had shot a five point in the head and they threw it in the back of his friends truck that had a cap on it. When they got back to the cabin they opened up the back and there was the deer staring back at them. Apparently he had just knocked it out.
My dad being a smartass pulled out his thirtyeight and said he was going to shoot it. This was back when gas tanks were behind the seat so the owner of the truck freaked.
My grandad was laughing his ass off the whole time and said that was the first time he ever saw someone bring a deer back to camp to kill it, then went into the cabin and grabbed a ballpeen hammer and gave it to my dad. As the deer scrambled to escape the truck my dad grabbed it by the antlers and whacked it in the head with the hammer a couple times killing it.

That was my introduction to deer hunting.
I had always been a fisherman; as soon as I could hold a pole my Godfather had me in a boat. The progression to hunting was inevitable but took years. I fell in love with hunting at about 20 y.o.
Truthfully, if I had to choose between hunting and fishing and never lift again…Fish on! It’s that much of a drug for me.

What type of fishing??
Love bass on a lake. Hooked maybe 6 trout in my whole life by accident. I can hit the Jersey shore in 2 1/2 hrs so I get Blues in 2x a year. Strippers are fun if you can get them when they are running.
I started fly fishing for bass about 5 years ago. Pulling in a little 2 lb’er on flyline is a blast. Once hooked, you start pulling the line in by hand rather then fighting them with a reel. Its you on one end and the bass on the other with a line in between.

I go for small mouth in a nearby river. The first one I caught I was expecting walleye because they were hitting all afternoon, then Wham! That thing dragged me up and down a channel in the river for what seemed like for ever and I couldn’t even see what it was.
FWIW, I was just over in Cameron/Potter at one of my favorite trout streams for a few days last week. Saturday afternoon at dusk sounded like a 21 gun salute echoing through the mountains.

Pennsylvania so I am assuming smallmouths?
Large out of the lakes but you can get some nice small mouths out of the rivers.
Here’s a pic of a NJ striper. That’s about average size; they get much bigger but never end up in the boat with me.

Bet that was a nice fight. I caught several 20 pounders last year out some Mississippi River backwater. That is a hell of a fight on basic largemouth gear.
Alright, I’m finally going out this afternoon to try and take some ducks. Hopefully I have a success story for you this afternoon. Supposed to be a little rainy, is that good or bad?

Last day for PA extended season PA WMU 5C tomorrow. Snow and a low of 3 degrees. Like a dumbass I bet I’m to stupid and go out. My wife thinks I have a real problem. Any of you guys get that? Thank God I come back with game once and awhile or she would think there’s another woman!

The “You have a real issue” line doesn’t really come from mine until turkey season gets here. Last year I got, “If you flirted with me as much as you flirt with a bunch of turkeys you might get some every now and then”. I actually thought that was clever so I had to laugh ha.
She also used the line, “While you are out there hunting these turkeys I want you to think about something that holds as true for you as it does for them, If you go around chasing every female that tries to get your attention, eventually you get your head blown off.” haha
I am a little late to this thread, but I would say make some friends who are hunters. Have them take you to deer camp and show you the in’s and out’s…
I grew up hunting, being a Michigander it’s in our blood to be outdoors. I prefer to bow hunt for deer, but I also turkey hunt, hunt pheasant, duck, and rabbit. Why? because I like eating wild game. I don’t condone hunting otherwise. Now I know that might catch some heat with others who are in it for the sport, but it is what it is. I get two deer a year, and I waste as little as possible. I skin them, and sell the hides, skulls, and antlers.
I suggest if you’re looking to be more outdoorsy no intentions of eating what you kill that and have you take up fishing or backpacking… You can catch and release fish. Once you shoot an animal you can’t undo it…

I’ve dumped many girlfriends that tried to mess with my hunting lol.
