Hunting for Beginners

Wild hogs in Texas.

Slight difference.

The Japanese goddess of war, Marishiten, rode into battle atop a wild boar…

Boars galore where I was living in Japan. You could hear them every night on the ridge to the immediate east of my house. I saw one once that looked about as big as a small pony, and sounded like it too as it galloped across the road just ten meters in front of me.

That cant be.

I am sure you have real hogs in the US .

Those are just piggies with an attitude.

Hogs are very clever demons with a chip on their shoulder and highly infectious tusks.

All right, full disclosure. Yes, I found the most innocuous-looking picture of feral hogs in Texas I could find. Is this more like it?

I am sure you killed it with a karate chop and turned it into some highly beefed… um pigged up tomato stew, but some people seem to be under the impression that they just keel over on sight.

I hope you you don’t think I have this impression. I only meant that Hogs are relatively easier to hunt than deer because of the numbers and opportunities that hogs present. Like I mentioned before at the start of this thread, I’m just trying to learn more about this hobby so your going to have to forgive me if I come across as ignorant. I’m simply trying to get a handle on things.

@OP

Misread your title. Was going to suggest that we have a whole forum of them…

On the piggie discussion: I am a bit surprised at the description of wild hogs as being greasy. My experience of game, including boar, is that it is invariably lean and that in cooking it you often have to add fat from other animal. Case in point, mooseburger (add pork or beef fat), Civet de marcassin (add bacon).

Full disclosure: Not a hunter, but approve AS LONG AS YOU EAT THE DAMN THING, and if you are close enough to the pick up point, that includes innards. Have some problems with shooting bears, though ( unless he lives in your trash can). But that is more of a totem thing.

I have seen hogs who had half their body rotted away (well not half, but a LOT) who were still standing.

Someone I know, well, knew, got his rifle entangled in a hog and was dragged along until he killed it with his sidearm.

Which means, you get a sidearm.

And, if one gets to you, get to a hospital, those beasts carry diseases.

Also, they are highly intelligent, they use scouts!

No kidding.

Finally, dont kill their matriarch or they will multiply…

I wont tell you what they do with a field if they get to it, but watch what they do and how they do it…

Clever, clever little bastards, you will have lots of fun with them.

Speaking of Texas hog hunting…This is how you do it

If you are looking for more of a gentlemen’s hunt try dove hunting. Less gadgets to buy. A gentleman with money? Try duck hunting.

I’m curious, Gentleman in what way?

Do doves have as much bones as duck and quail? They’re frustrating to eat.

with doves most people just rip the breast off and eat that instead of cooking the whole bird.
try rabbit hunting which is a lot of fun and depending on the terrain it’ll really let you know what kind of shot you are.

Gentlemen as in you spend more time chit chatting with others rather than sitting quitely alone. Hog hunting is best enjoyed behind dogs, rabbit hunting is usually with dogs. I live in Tennessee and more people buy a license in order to dove hunt than any other species. I mentioned dove and duck hunting because Texas is in the middle of a major migration route for both birds.

Silverbood is correct most people cut the breast out of both dove and ducks for their table fare. If you are looking for something to do I would look into bird hunting, if you are looking for something to eat then study up on deer or hogs. Don’t forget you could always just go fishing.
